For me, LOTR is an all encompassing masterpiece that achieves excellence in a wide array of themes. From war to horror, from a psychological drama to brotherly bonds, from an individual centered struggle to apocalyptic stakes and so forth.

So in this sense it greatly distances itself from any other favorites that I hold dear.

But to mention a few of those that are on my top list, they would be.

Taegukgi
The Iwo Jima Duology (Flags and Letters)
Children of Men
Oldboy
Waltz with Bashir
Der Untergang
The Bourne Trilogy
2001 and 2010
The Fountain
The Dark Knight Trilogy
The Matrix (excluding the sequels)
The Thin Red Line
The Watchmen
The Tree of Life

Every single one of these movies is what I consider an absolute cinematic masterpiece, to me, they are all tied for the 2nd place in my list of all time favorites.

Well now that some of you mentioned several movies or even posted a list, here's my top 10, give or take a couple of films Very Happy

1. Apocalypse Now
2. Godfather I & II
3. Fight Club
4. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
5. Seven Samurai
6. A Clockwork Orange
7. The Shawshank Redemption
8. Cidade de Deus
9. The Silence of the Lambs
10. Natural Born Killers

Then after that you have a few films that could replace a couple of the ones on the above list like: Schindler's List, The Pianist, Tropa de Elite, Hero, American Beauty, The Empire Strikes Back, Taxi Driver, Full Metal Jacket.

And finally some others that I really love but that would not necessarily be in my top 10 like: Blade Runner, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Inglourious Basterds, La Vita e Bella, LOTR, Gladiator, Braveheart, Ben-Hur, La Haine, Vertigo, Saving Private Ryan, The Dark Knight, etc.

Yeah that happens with movies, personally i absolutely hate Memento. I've watched it two times and the movie basicly just pisses me off, i hate the characters, the plot, everything about it, i dont get how people can like it. Same with Citizen Kane (by MANY people regarded as the best movie ever created), i think it's a complete bore . Seven Samurai has everything imo, especially the characters are great and you really feel for them. I even liked it as a kid (when i loathed black/white movies, which says a lot), it really affected me and still does in a big way. It's like with music (..or games.. or art), sometimes you connect, sometimes you dont.

I guess you're right. I should stop watching it over and over from now on Laughing

And I'm not one of those with short attention span or something. I mean, I watched it 5 times now and that thing is over 3 hours. I really tried. I get also the feeling that many people like it so much because it's a pioneer in the way the whole plot/story/characters play out. Ahead of it's time back then. Because that I really appreciate about the movie.

story wise

harvey (great story)
once upon a time in america (imo shits all over any gangster movie made in that time and a few years after)
once upon a time in the west (shits all over the good the bad and the ugly trilogy)
sunset blvd (really decent noir movie)
arsenic and old lace (overacting at its best and it actually works in this)

Story wise i mean movies that have taken a genre and weren't afraid to go with it. I'm not including movies that are trully epic like chinatown / great dictator cause the lives of the directors/writers have influnenced the movies (altering the endings of both to spread a message because of something that happened during filming)

best story once upon a time in the west in my opinion. Does it real well and you do feel for the characters without feeling like youre forced to.

tech wise

2001 (has done things that were ahead of its time)
citizen kane (same goes for this)
speed racer (took green screen filmmaking and just improved the fuck out of it)
alien (nice genre starter with fantastic effects)
the fall (cinemtagoraphy from all over the world and story to top them)
godfather (some shots in this are just fantastic)

by tech i mean movies that haven't come close to achieve what these movies have accomplished. yes speed racer. fuck off. movie pisses all over green screen movies like 300, sin city etc.

the best tech movie from that list in my opnion is citizen kane. some of the shots have yet to be done today (well kick ass did it well with the mirrors but y'know. )

War movies (war movies that have taken that extra step)
thin red line
apoc now
All Quiet on the Western Front
platoon
das boot
saving private ryan (but only the beach scene the rest of the movie fucking blows)

Best war movie in my opinion is thin red line. Fantastic shots and a brilliant execution. can't go wrong with that.

Lot of movies are favoured because the masses tell them too. Citizen Kane has a shit story. It's about a guy who died and how he lived his life. Back then it was like any other movie. Not many movies follow that formula successfully. Same with Casablanca. It's a stiff movie. But it was designed to be perfect. And in a way it is for what it accomplished. But over time there were better movies that followed that formula (man meets woman he used to love. They fall in love again shit happens. Lets remember shit about why we aren't together.) but it was designed and shaped in such a way that it sticks with you. Seven samurai isn't even that good. He made way better movies than seven samurai.

But this thread is about your best movie ever. If you want to see achievement in film making then you have to watch those certain movies people find boring, Casablanca seven samurai 2001 citizen Kane Roshomon godfather, etc. heck the matrix sequels have done things in filmmaking that were daring, and even if they were shit compared to the "low budget" matrix. Such achievements should always be commended.
