I read there was a W8 Enterprise version allowing you to use it for 90 days before having to activate? |
do NOT install the Enterprise trial... you can NOT upgrade it to a full version! once it expires it's expired (unless maybe cracked)!!!!
see here

To upgrade, the evaluation must be uninstalled and a non-evaluation version of Windows must be re-installed from your original installation media. |

I did not mean the featureset... but the timebombed-trial everyone can download directly from MS to full...
MS stated that there is no activating a key on the trial version - be it volume license or retail - switching it to to a fully licensed product.

Why would he install the time trial, though? The grace period in Windows 8 is limitless, and only annoyances are the watermarks and stickers. He can install a Windows 8 Enterprise and leave it in inactivated state.

how the fuck should I know? he explicitly asked about the 90 day enterprise trial version... to which I replied he shouldn't bother because it can't be activated afterwards...

What will be the wind from now on is KMS servers. They activate your Windows for 180 days. If a miniKMS it out, that would be great.
Anyway, for 15$, if people find Win8 Pro useful, it's a good deal. |
HELLO
a gangan style korean patch activator is out there from few days ago(updated)
i tested it seems activated in cmd and all no nags
good luck(same thing for server 2012)

If I activate Windows through a KMS server, do the watermarks get removed? Are there any available KMS servers right now? And does Windows check the server everytime it restarts, or right after the 180-day activation period?

Hmm, not bad. If that's the case, I'm more than happy to give Win8 a whirl right now. 180 days is more than enough. And there's a fair chance some kind of crack might appear during that period of time.
And another one: If I activate Windows via a KMS serves and it subsequently goes down, does the OS stay activated?

It will remain activated for the remaining duration of the activations period. After that, you will again be in inactivated mode for unlimited time.

Actually, there is almost no chance a crack might appear. What you want really is the miniKMS, which you can run when you need to activate.

I remember seeing similar posts when Windows 7 was released, and yet, here we stand.

Huh? Windows uses the same activation model as Vista, there were little, insignificant changes only. Here it is completely revamped. Anything can be cracked, it just looks very unlikely and not really necessary with miniKMS.

That would require you to run it every 180 days, correct?

Day 1 with Windows 8 as my main OS.
Previously I've only tried win8 on other machines (ie. work machines) and I have to say that it is a difference. I never felt like I needed to learn the bits and bobs about Metro before, in fact I tried to avoid it like the plague - the whole idea of a full screen start menu is revolting to me, but I figured I'd try to see if I could adapt to the thing. This one month experiment is to try and challenge my own conservative views (I did the same thing with Windows 7, and ended up liking it more than my beloved XP). I've now become sort of accustomed to Metro, however its behavior is less than logical. I run Win8 with dual screen and you are supposed to get this search menu by moving your mouse to the corner of the screen, well sometimes that works and sometimes it does not. You can also search using WIN+F, it brings up a search window that fills my entire 1440p-screen, which is -a lot- of files in one screen, clutter clutter and lots of more clutter. Granted, the old search function did list all those files as well but they were in a resizable window. Yes you can sort them by double clicking on what file type they are (like Music), but it's still this annoying notion of having everything dragged over the entire screen. Metro does have one thing going for it though, it is really quick and it "feels" as if someone who knew how to optimize code made it. Without a doubt does it get "in" and "out" of the way in a rather pleasing fashion.
In general Windows 8 "feels" smoother and quicker than Windows 7, I did an upgrade and kept all my same settings and the transition was a lot more smooth than I expected. The whole ordeal took as little as 1 hour and it even upgraded some drivers for me and gave me a download link to a driver that I had to install manually (for my ASUS motherboard Ai-recharger). I have a rather peculiar setup with my windows where I keep some "unnecessary" system files and documents (like the desktop, My Documents, My Pictures, etc.) linked to secondary (non-SSD)-drives, and it kept all those locations without a hitch, it even moved my Fonts-folder for me. Windows 8 also has a smaller installation footprint than the previous one, but the "quicker boot time" is a load of dung. It boots exactly on the second as fast as Win7 for me.
Pros:
+ It is sleek and quick to operate, quicker and sleeker than Win7
+ Handles dual screens better in some regards, Metro does not work with dual screen
+ Games perform identically for me to Win7
+ Metro, whilst being a hindrance at times, and being annoyingly "full screen" does get out of the way very quickly - it disturbs me so seldomly that I COULD get accustomed to it.
+ Search features, system stability, everything "feels" more stable
Cons:
- No start menu. Do I miss it? Yes I do. Everything is spread out and arranged over Metro now in a rather hashed up way.
- Aero looks like shit, no really... everything is so boxy with sharp edges - the design is not my cup of tea. The whole windows interface feels like it has been taken back at least one century.
- METRO is terrible at what it is intended to do. Listing METRO as some kind of place where you will immediately will find what you commonly work with is a load of horse spunk. I tried adding my national news papers and it won't show anything in real time, I added twitter and facebook and they are not updating live. The whole thing is static and menus such as "Games", "Videos" etc. are most likely going to be completely ignored by me. If this were supposed to be functional and individual (like Microsoft claims it is) it would have MY installed games and apps there, but it's all Microsoft-sponsored shit, and it does not integrate at all. While METRO is a bold strategy to "get out of" old interface problems, it has a lot of issues and is in some ways a step back. The basic idea of organizing everything in a single, simple, visually appealing "start screen" is actually not bad, but METRO is not it. It only comes off as a clunky framework that limits and hinders your workflow, and on top of that it has its peculiarities that, while being very quick to get out of your way for "regular tasks" will frustrate the living fuck out of you.
Yes, yes I'm back.
Somewhat.

So, in order to activate W8 Enterprise, I just run CMD as an administrator and type the following code:
Code: | slmgr.vbs -ipk <KEY>
slmgr /skms <KMS SERVER>
slmgr.vbs -ato |
Where KEY is one of the keys (the Enterprise key specifically) in the W8 FAQ by Leo, and the KMS SERVER is a KMS server.
Did I get it correctly?
P.S. Is it allowed to post KMS servers here?

Yup, just add those commands one by one and after you finish with activation you can also run this command (to clear the name of KMS server to default) :
slmgr -ckms

Not sure if this was posted already, but there is currently a way to activate Win 8 Pro permanently:
1. Get a free Media Center key here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/feature-packs
The key might take a while to arrive (~24 hours for me).
2. Install Windows 8 Pro Retail with the VL key (don't use the MSDN VL images since they don't have the "add features" functionality).
3. Activate it via KMS.
4. Run "slmgr.vbs /ckms" in Command Prompt as admin.
5. Run "control /name Microsoft.WindowsAnytimeUpgrade" in the 'Run' window(Win+R)
5. Enter the Media Center key.

I'd love it if someone still has a discount code to spare...
Nevermind, found out how to grab a code, so I already have one. ^_^
Just use this and get a discount code. ^_^

There's an udate system in win 8 that lets you keep most (if not all) settings. How stable that is I don't know, trying it on my laptop now.
