Why the facepalms? It's not like they can do worse than Lucas has for past 20 years or so.

Yeah, had Disney been in charge for the prequel trilogy, they could've even made Jar-Jar be something that didn't want to make you kill yourself as soon as he was on the screen (I mean if you just have to have a dumb comedy sidekick for the kids, at least do it right - preferably don't have one at all of course).

I just don't see how they can add anything meaningful to the franchise. Episode 6 wraps everything up.
They showed Anikin Skywalker's spirit along Obi Wan's, meaning that he is dead for good. We didn't see the Emperor's spirit though. Maybe they want to bring him back to life...

Well I'm not seeing it as a bad thing... I mean, it couldn't possibly be worse than the new trilogy, right? Smile

@me7:

Lucas already planned episodes 7 through 12 (two trilogies) in the 80's, but they probably won't use those, not directly anyway.

And it's not like there isn't a shit load of that extended universe material out there; they just need to pick and choose to make movies for at least a 100 years. Laughing

Yeah, but LucasArts doesn't include Lucasfilm, but the former does includes the first. Smile

You do know that there are like tons and tons of books about SW?

Palpatine gets resurrected like 10 times xD The Yuuzhan Vong coming, the rule of the One Sith, Darth Caedus that is Luke's nephew... A lot is happening after the death of Darth Vader...

Well it's not like anyone can do anything worse to the series than what George himself has done -- and, like zmed, I wouldn't mind seeing Heir to the Empire on the big screen. So fuck it ... bring it on, let's see what they've got.

It will be interesting to see if they go with the established EU canon, or they go with a completely new direction and invalidate decades of storylines already accepted in the community. And yeah, they can't fuck up any more than Lucas did. Ironically, Disney wouldn't have made the same mistake with Jar-jar the same way he did. Very Happy

One can hope they want to do something special with this, though it's likely a strictly financial decision. I was sure the franchise would slowly die after Lucas ruined everything good about it - but it just keeps going strong, so it's not like they really need to do much except to market the shit out of future movies.

Still, it would be cool if the setting was taken seriously and they handed the movie to talented people.

Whedon is not fit for the potential of the setting. All he can do is jokes and clever pop dialogue. We need someone who can take things seriously.

Probably some fresh blood.

Absofuckinglutely

Oh and the thread title is incorrect, Disney don't "want" to buy LucasFilm, they *are* buying LucasFilm. If not already bought, the wording is a bit hazy.

In my book, Firefly/Serenity is the StarWars George Lucas failed to make with his prequels. Joss Whedon can be serious if he wants to (look at the last Firefly episode).

... and look at Angel and Buffy too, both shows have very dark and serious undertones. I guess it's easier to blindly hate though.

Anything based on the stories written by Timothy Zahn would be awesome. I highly doubt it'll happen though, they'll probably play it safe and stay in the confines of the previous movies.

star wars is it's own entire universe. all they need is someone creative with a flair for the spectacle. whedon can do it. star wars needs humour. they all had it. in some weird fashion. whedon can take the source material and give a faithful feature. by faithful i mean it'll be set in the universe and it wont have bullshit.

heck... give it to someone who can do a gritty noir-esque star wars movie. no need for luke, chewie, etc... they were just set in a story that happened in the universe. they can do what the fuck ever they want.

if they were to go with star-trek then they'd need to keep it grounded. but this... fuck no... go big or go home. ep 1 2 and 3 had poor story ideas and poor casting... but other than that they had what makes star wars star wars. big fucking spectacles that just make you go fuck me!

Well that's just it though, Zahn's (godly!) Heir to Empire/Thrawn Trilogy did stay within the confines of the previous movies .. or rather, the "original" trilogy and not horrible prequels, and Zahn's work has long been considered canon -- so I would be VERY happy to see that come to the big screen.

When I first read the announcement I was hoping for a movie set in the Old Republic era, but Episode VII sounds awesome too.
