As far as i know, there is no place where you wouldn´t be able to pvp, you won´t be able to completly avoid it no matter what, you will be able to set it low but that´s it and that just means that aslong as youre in core systems you will get pitted more against npc but you could still run into players, but as you get further out that setting has no effect.

There should be an option to toggle on and off pvp for those who's done with their campaign and want to play with their friends without risking being nuked by someone.
I just worry about those with lifetime insurance on their ships. They can basically just fuck you over without risking anything. Well, as long as the lifetime insurance ship is any good that is.

Whoa, last time I looked in here we were all happy and smiles!
PvP is great, ganking just isn't. There is zero justification for it, but if the game mechanics allow itm well it's going to happen. So SC hopefully will have measures in place to only punish the weak when it is their own fault.
And I can imagine Kenny over there paying $300 for a level 80 character in MMO's to avoid the boring 'levelling up' process. Ignoring the obvious steps of say, learning to actually play the character/class, thus making you a liability in any group.
Anyone here who buys a ship is still starting from the beginning, but I personally will be grafting my way up to a carrier at least - I fully intend to run my own Starfleet in the game

Well ok, but you had to have spent some serious $ to get it, and so there will be very, very few ingame. Which won't affect anyone else ingame.

There will not be ganking like in eve, as when you do a jump people won´t come out in the exact same spot but randomly within a predefined area, that would be so you can get a chacnce to fight or flee, but you will not be able to turn of pvp completly no matter what, if you want to avoid PVP completly you will have to run your own server which will be possible.

Maybe i'll do the same. It just depends on what there is left to do once you complete the campaign. They might perhaps add stuff for the multiplayer part. Would be awesome if so!

You will always have to worrie a bit, space is a dangerous place and you can´t really know what or who you will run into at all times, even the squadron 42 will allow other ppl, like you can get your friends to join you as wingmen, but at the same time you might get real ppl who lwill take over the npc ships youre fighting and make it even more challanging, but i think that bit is optional tho, atleast that is how i understood it.
Personally can´t wait to get my Stella and other ships from the pledge, and go board something like a vanduul carrier hehe

I bet there is an option for dedicated servers to not allow pvp though. If so they might host different types of servers.

What has me confused a bit is the single-player part. Will I be able to play this game purely in SP, as in Freelancer, with AI pirates, factions etc, and also during and after completion of the Squadron 42 campaign?

Then clearly the persistent universe might not be for you, but this won´t be EvE not even close, the type of ganking in that game will not be possible in SC, aslong as you are in core systems and have set your pvp option to low you will get mostly npc/ai to fight but still run the risk of getting the occasional payer to fight, but if you move out to fringe systems it´s free for all basicly as it should.
If you can´t take that i would recommend getting some friends together and run your own server where you can do as you please.
There will atleast be options for all types of players to enjoy themselfs.

This a hundred times over. By-choice PvP (such as duels) is fine by me, but when I play online I either want DM/TDM/Objective based competition or nothing at all. I don't play to have my enjoyment of a game ruined by some asshat  SP/solo is for me, or with friends as wingmen.

And you know all this how, exactly? Stop telling me what I would or wouldn't like and stop speaking as if you're Chris Roberts himself. You don't know any more, or less, than what the rest of us do -- and you certainly don't have the right to tell me how to play.

Urgh, that came out way more teeth'y than I intended. Sorry >_< I'm just tired of people defending asshat behaviour online and, in my experience, any game that lets people be assholes will invariably attract them --- which is the side I want no part of. I'll be playing offline if there's any chance at *all* of someone deliberating ruining my game just for the sake of it.

You could play the complete game completly offline as far as i remeber, it would run like a local server on your comp.

I did say i enjoy playing with others, so i guess the persistent universe is for me. But i won't limit myself to playing with a couple of friends because that's boring as shit. If the entire campaign is available online or offline i'm guessing there will be party missions along the way.

sabin those are from him and i´m not telling you what to like just that whatever your prefrence is there will be options open to you.
Just cause i followed it hardcore and he answered alot of this thru the campaing, you are not the only one who has these worries.
Nothing is set in stone dude, there might be changes to what he said during development as always.
I´ll just shut up and let you go on, if i didn´t know i wouldn´t type it, if someone asks something i know about the game i thought they might like to know what he plans sofar, but clrealy you would rather not know so it´s fine.
*IT´s ok sabin, we all dislike asshats and i wouldn´t dream of defending that crap, it got super tedious in eve, my point is don´t worrie just yet as he has said they will do as much as they can to avoid that type of gameplay, but douchebags will always be there, like i heard the goonswarm will be there and i don´t really look forward to that heh

Heh just this afternoon I thought I would try out planetside 2 and the moment I spawn my new character I get killed on the spot. =)

See, I don't mind when it comes to games like that - because that's the very nature of them. Competitive shooters are exactly that; competitive! You're there to work together and kill the enemy, fine and dandy, but MMOs irritate the hell out of me because of that. Flying/running around, questing and doing other shit, when some high level asshat wipes you JUST because it amuses him.

Tried dust 514 and i was nuked to oblivion the 2 times i tried playing it. They were camping every spawnpoint so i didn't have a chance. When it's like that i just delete the game and don't bother with it again.
