A "Let's Play" of this game, it's German (I think.) so it seems the game was sold early there or something ??

I've posted it already. From what I've read this was captured in Ubisoft's headquarters or something like eg two weeks ago, and now that the embargo is over he posted it. The game was not sold early lol Smile

Anyone remember F.E.A.R's soft shadows?

At the popular, at the time, resolution of 1280x1024 with AA & AF disabled:

the absolute fastest graphics card that cost $600 performed at 46 fps. The midrange 6600gt that cost $250 performed at 18fps.

Welp, I guess it must have been a bad console port lol wut

Or you could just disabled the effect and still enjoy good graphics AND good framerate because you don't HAVE to have everything enabled.

Crysis 3 is going to make people and their hardware weep. Smile

So that explains it, how unfortunate, well the game will be out next Friday in the EU and the following Tuesday in the US so there's still a chance of the game being available early.
(Retailers should have the game early next week, strange that a PS3 or X360 version hasn't leaked online yet but it'll probably happen within a few days too.)

Yes, because we sure are getting new stuff that look as amazing as FEAR's soft shadows did back then.

Wait...hold on...something's wrong in that sentence, just can't put my finger on it...

Rolling Eyes

What's with you going to such extreme lengths to defend this shit all of a sudden consolitis? Back then, graphics hadn't stood more or less still for half a decade. I'll reserve judgement for once the game is out, but nothing I've seen in the videos shows me anything that would warrant getting just 45-50 FPS. BF3 proves that proper programming gets you brilliant graphics with equally brilliant performance.

Weren't they amongst the first with trying to achieve softer shadows however?
(I don't fully remember - this was in 2004 - 2005 somewhere - but for it's time that must have been quite good, Jupiter or what the game engine was called did a pretty good job although larger outdoor areas were very problematic.)

Riddick Escape from Butcher Bay is another title where it's nearly the same system, a overlapping softer shadow over the original darker one, I'm sure there's a more proper name but it's not like today's system with just softening the edges or well however that works, I'm not that good at 3D.
(Initially only available to Nvidia 6000 series due to Shader Model 3 requirements.)

Let me correct myself then: how amazing it could've looked if implemented properly; the fact that their math is off doesn't take away from the fact that it was still relatively new at the time and was a huge visual improvement when done properly (IIRC, Riddick did them pretty darn well). What exactly does FC3 do that would warrant just 50 FPS?

Yes, it's far more easier to soften today's shadowmapped based games than those two games with stencil shadows.

Now that you mentioned Riddick, just for old time's sake, because people have forgot what kind of framerates they were getting:

40fps? Must be a true PC game, oh wait. That's with soft shadows and AA off btw.

I love how you're completely ignoring the question I've asked you twice now. What exactly does FC3 have that would be so heavy on the GPU, something we haven't seen in other games that run better (again, assuming that benchmark is accurate and not just a worst-case scenario result from a built-in benchmark as they often suck balls)?

An open world with global illumination is definitely resource intensive. And since it's DX11 sponsored by AMD I assume there will be tessellation and more. What they put in Hitman: Absolution could be an indication. I do know it looks pretty awesome though.

It seems everyone expects to play on Ultra settings and get smooth 60fps whether they're on 460'ies, 6870'ies, 680'ies or 7970'ies. So far most open world games with an Ultra setting close to the Crysis Ultra setting (at the time) have seen some severe FPS punishment. It's certain effects and how they interact with each other quadrupling the work that has to be done for certain things (SSAA+FXAA on Sunbeams, particles etc.).

Enter the graphics menu, find the settings that makes your experience smooth. Overclock if you want to tick that extra little quality setting or get a new CPU/GPU/CF/SLI (with the last two, pray for functional profiles).

Other developers have put Ultra in their games without being even half as stressful, but they also don't look as good. It's become a marketing ploy for those developers, they believe (and probably rightfully) that the customer feels more content if he can get smooth game play even though he's running Ultra.

So we've got two sorts of games with ultra settings, the kind that is just a marketing joke and the kind that is truly serious about pulling out all the stunts (which drains power/performance).
Nope, I expect Mediium/couple of high settings with my 6850 Smile

I think you have a weird taste if it looks like crap to you. Crap? Really?

About the AO I think the guy was playing with the console SSAO activated instead of the PC HBAO:

See how much more refined it is, instead of being a huge dark outline?

This. I'm playing FC2 (higest settings) and i just looked at some FC2 youtube vids with the same settings, it looks tremendously better when playing it. I noticed this a long time ago when uploading videos of my mods, it always left me disapointed of how it looked compared to actually playing it.

Tessellation would be the only thing that would justify that, but if I look at this I don't see it mentioned; geometry COULD be it, but I doubt it. In the actual game I also see plenty of jerky edges on stuff that's supposed to be round so...meh. Everything else is all shit we've seen in Crysis and FC2. Even the fairly inefficient CE2 averages 60 FPS with everything absolutely maxed out on a 680; given that DX11 performs better than DX9 did and that even CE3 runs better than CE2 did, I still don't see it.

Don't get me wrong, the game looks mighty fine, I'm just not as flabbergasted as you are, as I see nothing new. You also seem to be quite hyped about the game, which I am not - at all, because I found FC2 a huge disappointment.

We'll see soon enough I suppose.

Translation from the PCGH.de article:

Quote:
Note: Far Cry 3 offers true DX11 driver multithreading (which is currently only supported by Geforce graphics cards), however caused DX11 MT on some of our test computer for crashes, so we had to disengage the feature for our benchmarks.

Interesting, especially since it's AMD sponsored. But where was this option, I can't say I noticed it..

From the pc gamer review.

Quote:
Other than that, it’s a nice PC version: responsive mouse movement, specific graphics and FoV options, tutorials reflect your custom controls, and it runs decently on Ultra-everything on a modest 3GHz dual core machine with a Radeon HD 5800

Doesn't really tell the same story as those benchmarks a few pages back.
