I'm getting around double the average wage in here, and I've been lucky to live in an old apartment of a friend that he no longer lives in, so I can take care of his cat, so I pay only the bills, no rent. Spending like 50eur a month on games, 50 on parking, 125 on bills and 250 on my car payments. Still I don't go out much, but travel around from time to time, and I'm happy, considering I'm making 1/10 of what people in the EU are getting while working in IT..

I buy only expensive stuff to eat. Buy the delux edition of gadgets I buy.. Not complaining at all Laughing

Yeah, rent is a bitch, major bitch. Don't know about you guys, but here in Budapest it's quite high, but fuck, it was high in Timisoara as well. I have a shitty small apartment, which would be good all he way up until I have kids. I put all my money in it, when I bought it, but it was worth it, at least when I move I can sell it, and money's not lost on rent for years.

I'd never live in San Fran. In fact, I'd never live in California either. If I'd live in the US, it'd probably be New Hampshire or Indiana.

The market is skewed here by insane real estate laws and taxes. But if you change them, you'll put a lot of minorities and single mothers out on the street, because they won't be able to afford rents even if they were significantly lower. There is no good solution Sad

@Tainted: That's absolutely insane :/

The average here is around ~1000€ but wages are almost half the level of the EU which makes things harder than they should be.

Also there's the habit to underpay people <30, and expand apprenticeship periods till infinity and beyond because 'it's not that you're gonna find a good job anyway, so stay here, slave!' Laughing Sad

California is de facto the worst run state of the US. If it can be fixed, it will be very hard and long. Imho.

Why those two places?

Well, I'm more of an east coast guy to start with, but NH for the low taxes, and very business friendly economy. Almost the same applies to Indiana, plus it's mostly a republican state and I have friends there. I likes the business Very Happy

Question for the Euros, I feel here in Belgium alot more than in Germany things have gotten alot more expensive since the introduction of the Euro. I remember drinking a pint for 1 euro when euro was introduced, now its 1,60/1,70 euro everywhere. but wages havent increased by 60-70%. I see alot more people with a average paying job struggling to get by end of the month while i remember those people when they started working the same job 10 years ago having enough to go out and save some money on the side, this is with variables like housing and family members not changing.

I was wondering what's the cost of living in your towns/countries?

Here in Brazil, the rent for a decent but small (1, maybe 2 bedrooms) apartment (in a big city) is about 500 usd, and you can live (going out maybe 4 times a month for dinner, having cable tv, 10mb internet, etc) with another 500.

Obviously most people live with less, and some with a lot more, but I think a thousand usd is the minimum for a decent life here (nothing fancy). The average wage is a lot less than that, by the way.

Edit: I forgot to say if you consider São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro the prices are much higher, so I'm talking big cities (1~3 million people) but not the biggest ones.

Here it's basically:

* ~1000€ /month
* 20€ /month (4 to 7Mbit)
* ~150€ (including gas + garbage)
* ~40€ (excluding trains, those are much more expensive for no particular reason)
