Was playable for me at max settings, but the dips did get annoying. Still didn't stop me form beating the game.
Getting all the collectables, side missions, homestead missions, main story missions yielded about 82% completion. I'm guessing the rest comes from full sync's from missions? I couldnt be bothered by full syncs, some of them were too annoying.

Yep it's incredibly random..for some weird (but pleasant) reason I have steady 60fps even in Boston whereas other people with systems more powerful than mine struggle to keep a playable framerate. o.O |
What system do you have and at what settings?
You can confirm standing in front of the first marketplace you encounter when you enter Boston and maintain 60? That's almost unheard of. |
i2500k@ 4.3Ghz, 570GTX and 8GB ram, playing at 1080p (High details) + SweetFX enabled. Very high settings sadly destroy the performance for no logical reason (and the visuals are basically the same).

As was said, it's DX11 only. DX11 can be used with DX9 hardware, but it still will be running trough DX11. It just scales down the features to a level that is compatible with non- DX11 hardware.
Edit: Also that DX10 forcing seems to be a bunch of poop as well |
An engine/renderer built with DX11 code can NOT run on a DX9-generation card. There must be another rendering path to get that to work, ie. a DX9 renderer. It's not like DX11 emulates all the DX11-specifics for DX9-level hardware.
So no, you cannot use DX11 with DX9 hardware. |
Quote: | The Direct3D 11 runtime is able to run on Direct3D 9 and 10.x-class hardware and drivers using the concept of "feature levels", expanding on the functionality first introduced in Direct3D 10.1 runtime.[19][20] [14] Feature levels allow developers to unify the rendering pipeline under Direct3D 11 API and make use of API improvements such as better resource management and multithreading even on entry-level cards, though advanced features such as new shader models and rendering stages will only be exposed on up-level hardware.[21] [19] There are three "10 Level 9" profiles which encapsulate various capabilities of popular DirectX 9.0a cards, and Direct3D 10, 10.1, and 11 each have separate feature levels; each upper level is a strict superset of a lower level. |
From wikkehpedia
Edit: With that said, from what I understand most games only seem to go as low as DX10 with backwards compatibility... including AC3. The previously quoted Sys Reqs are wrong - it's "512 MB DirectX® 10-compliant with Shader Model 4.0 or higher"

Yep i wasnt so fond of Ezio either in AC2 and maybe he was a anoying jerk at first but it gets better, Connor is just a terrible bland and unintersting character throughout the whole game

I'm hoping for a pirate spin-off, they could do a great Sea Dogs-like game with this engine, and the seabattles are just plain fun. The last Sea Dogs experimented a bit with visible crews on deck and stuff, but it was't nearly as pretty as in AC3.

pretty much this, haytham was very much interesting and connor is whole different (boring) story...

Finished the game. A lot of things were improved in comparison to the previous games in the series, yet I can't still say it's the best of them all.
Improved:
- Fighting mechanics. More challenging but still easy. At least now they "mob" on you so you need to escape and hide unless you want to spend an hour fighting endless enemies and getting a sore finger.
- Excellent addition of the climbing trees mechanics. One of the things I had the most fun with in the game.
- The naval battles. Best thing in the whole game, gameplay wise. Excellent mechanics.
- The natural environments were awesome, and a huge territory to roam. Maybe not as satisfyingly filled with things to do as I would had liked (personally), but big/gorgeous open world nevertheless.
Not as good as previous games (especially ACII and Bortherhood):
- The city environments. Boston and New York are generally boring when compared to Florence, Venice, Rome, Constantinople, etc. But I guess it's just how it was back in the time. this translates in a less rewarding experience when climbing buildings and constructions. Not even close to the fun and thrills of climbing the interior of the Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence, to name an example.
- The hunting felt useless to me. The mechanics were interesting but I didn't feel motivated to hunt a rabbit or a deer using the traps, baits, etc. as I always had enough money to buy everything I needed.
- The secondary missions weren't too good (excluding the naval battles of course). I was extremely disappointed by most of Captain Kidd's treasure quests and the Mayan one. Really short and dull.
Now, the story was as good as ever, I really loved it, the characters were generally great, particularly Connor and Haytham. Then also, some really bad ones like Daniel Cross. I was expecting more from that one, he ended being no more than a clown . The ending was kinda WTF, but I liked it and seemed logical to me.
One of the best games in 2012, but like I already said not necessarily a big step forward in comparison to the previous titles.
My score: 88/100

Given the different save systems, best guess to which (Skid, Reloaded, Theta) will work with future DLC? Though if it's any good & runs well enough probably easier to buy this one.

The Theta version required a simple copy/paste of the unlocked savegame. All the DLC worked fine. Didn't try the other releases, but what can be simpler than copy/paste three files ?

true - there's even an automated unlocker (for the RLD release) on GCW, installs via setup wizard

· The issue were certain Liberation Missions would be difficult to find
· The problem some players had trying to complete the Encyclopaedia of the Common Man side mission
· The issue where your second equipped pistol could possibly vanish on loading.
And maybe some other stuff, there's a link in that post to some other info.

Is it finally out on PC though? The post you linked is from 17th December, that's when the patch went out on consoles I think.
EDIT: Nevermind, I'm an idiot, didn't read the posts above.

The performance?
Maybe it can only be improved with a larger game engine overhaul which they are unwilling to invest in?

Well the list is based on the console release notes, which, I assume, don't have the same performance issues PC has, so in theory it's possible there are some performance fixes coming in a PC patch.
Realistically though, I think they would have mentioned it if they were working on the issue...

It's apparently really embarrassing or something then since it's not mentioned all that frequently other than "minor performance improvements" and "general stability optimizations" or at times not mentioned at all.
(The 1.04 patch for Far Cry 3 updated the shader cache so there had to be some optimizations there, Ubisoft also did a lot of undocumented optimizations while updating Ghost Recon Future Soldier although maybe that was because it did also change overall visual quality.)
(Skyrim probably wouldn't have been further optimized at all if not for the community being so aggressive about it.)
