If you didn't know Windows 8 has MSE already integrated. It just uses different name (Windows Defender).
My suggestion is test it with default combo (Windows Defender + Windows Firewall + UAC) and then change it if it is not enough. For random scans use Malwarebytes FREE. |
Didn't know that . I guess they did at least one thing right

Whatever you use be sure to have (from Windows):
1. Show hidden files, folder, and drives selected.
2. Hide protected operating system files [Recommended] unchecked.
Familiarize with all of these files and folders. And then, if you come across something suspicious, Google it.
Also, familiarize with all the process names from the Task Manager and note the process-count after startup and before you shut down your computer. Make sure that all processes are legit. In case, you come across any suspicious process-name, Google it.
Besides these, I'm using Avast Free(along with Windows Firewall) for files, web, network and script* in my Windows 8 and used it in Windows 7 before. Worked great so far.
*EDIT: script

What? You keep a mental inventory of every hidden and system file?

Nope. Just an idea so that I don't find myself in the dark on a rainy day.

People still use antiviruses? My last virus which fucked up my windows and filled my desktop with porn was back in 2004 I think, since then had one or two, but in the last 4/5 years, nothing. As people say Common Sense Ultimate works.

I have not used Virus Scan / Spyware scanning / Whatever since Windows Vista.
I've had 5 different systems running Vista / 7 for many years now and i've yet to get any malware.
I also turn off Windows Defender.
Since the huge security improvements in Vista Windows is very secure as long as you are keeping it up to date, and make educated decisions when running executables. That's really about the only way Windows (Since Vista) can become compromised. It requires the user to run something that is malware.
I find Virus Scan engines to be a complete joke. I remember I had NOD32 installed on a couple of XP machines, and when the 'Love Bug' came out NOD32 did jack shit to protect me.
The reality is that if there is a real 'zero-day' out there Virus Scan ain't gonna help you worth shit as it is. Virus Scan only prevents idiots from running shit that they shouldn't.
