Says he used MS financial reports. Doesn't say what those reports included and which parts he used for calculations though.

So a developer at MS has access to detailed financial reports?

Don't the reports like that get published (every quarter or so)? I think we have plenty of news about how one or another publisher/game developer is doing financially based on those reports... losses, profits, etc.
Don't know how detailed they are though.

I don't mind it if titles that are more suited for consoles (derp driving games, fighting games, platforms, hack and slash games, etc.) are released earlier for consoles. But if they start to sell games that are shit on consoles (fps, sims, rpgs, etc.) then that is absolutely fucking retarded.
Yes, yes I'm back.
Somewhat.

http://www.microsoft.com/investor/reports/ar11/financial_review/discussion_analysis.html
Those numbers are entirely open, they are legally obligated to publish them. So regarding Intel_NVIDIA's remark: the "proof" for this is about a million times better than any proof for "piracy is killing PC gaming", since they can never know for sure how many times a game has been pirated. These fiscal numbers however are set in stone, they're not made up, they're not guesstimates, they're hard numbers that have been filed with the US government. Of course, like any other company MS will have cheated on some numbers, like adding extra cost positions etcetera.
Meanwhile, a game like Portal 2 or SC2 sells just as well as the top sellers on consoles; and even with crossplatform titles that's counting retail only, since numbers from Steam and such aren't public. For the record, if you look at those top sellers on consoles you'll see that bar the CoD-extravaganza, sales aren't as good as they were with neither the PSX nor PS2. So yes, I'm still calling bullshit on any "piracy kills PC gaming" claims - a good game will sell just as well as on consoles. Not always in absolute numbers of course, because the PC gaming market is a lot smaller, but the piracy rate is high on any platform - and I dare say higher on consoles, it just affects the publishers less because the markets are so much bigger.

And even more people have facebook, why does it matter?
Different markets. The guy that loves angry birds is going to keep playing angry birds and the guy that loves Halo is going to keep playing Halo. And the guy that loves both is going to keep playing both.

@consolitis: it matters because unlike Facebook apps and games and such, Android and iOS games are actually very profitable. The margins are much higher than they are in the console market.
@JackQ: in that case, your remark has nothing to do with what's being discussed here?

No one I know using Android buy any of their apps, even the people who know nothing of apks etc. I'd actually like some piracy numbers for the mobile platforms, would be interesting.

Quite the opposite for me, I'm one of the few who's pirated a few apps here. Especially the people I know who only have iOS devices tend to buy everything, even with the retarded prices you sometimes see on the App Store for non-games. It's because the actual amount is so low for the games, they go "oh it's just 2 EUR...*click*" rather than looking at 60 EUR (or more).

Taffelost wrote: | I've never seen a game justifying me buying a console. There's more than enough good games released for the pc as it is. If they don't want my money then it's cool by me. Take Halo as an example. I was really psyched about it, then they decided to release it for x-box exclusively. As time went by my hype for the game dissipated and to this date I've never played the game, and I can't honestly see myself doing it either as the technology is quickly becoming ancient.
Do I see M$ as an evil corporation because they maximize their profitting? Hell no! It's their God given right and in fact it's their duty to do so to their share holders. I would've expect the management of my company to maximize profit to the max. If you want charity go to Red Cross or your government.
Now, you can of course discuss whether MS dominance or ability to draw unhealthy synergies from their PC-console dominance at the cost of the consumers is ethical. It's not a very relevant discussion however. MS has achieved their market position by a) being good capitalists and b) having ignorant/weak competition-authorities in the US/EU. If you want to blame someone then blame your authorities for allowed MS to become too powerful in their market. They shouldn't be allowed to buy any more developers and the same goes for Electronic Arts. You can't blame a corporation in the western world for being capitalists though. You can't blame a company for trying.
I'm exercising my rights as a consumer by not buying a console. When MS eventually after a year decides to release something on the PC I'm not interested as it's yesterdays news. They loose money from this consumer. That is my right just like it's their right to be x-box exclusive if they like. | XBOX360 only had 1 game that was worth owning this system Dead Rising ... but now its not worth owning when later parts are on the pc... it only now stands as a RGS system that can run games
PS3 is a worth owning console that to this day has 42 exclusives titles that are worth owing from Heavy Rain to Uncharted
Wii ... ehm some would say Dolophin PC emu but overall is worth having system , you can say its got the same appeal as PS2 has

Strip clubs might also be a profitable entertainment business but I don't see the relevance.
I've never heard of a single person that said "I'm tired of console gaming (from CoD to FIFA to Skyrim and more), angry birds it's where it's at! ".
There are people that like both, sure.
There are people that like smartphone gaming only, sure.
There are people that abandoned console gaming, because they don't like it anymore compared to smartphones, nope.
Different markets. If console gaming wasn't really profitable, I'd get it, but it is. And success on the smartphone market is no more certain than in the console market. Not every single app out there has made $$$$$$$$$$$.

You wanted all the games that use GfWL to become unplayable? Because that's what this probably means.
ASUS GTX 660 2GB, AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE, MSI 870-G45, 4GB DDR3 1333, Plextor M5 Pro 128GB, WD Red 1TB

And even it's microsoft we're talking about, IF GFWL was ever knocked offline I'm sure they would provide a way to play at least the single player portions of the game while offline (which they already do, sans the cheevos).
MP games however? Though titties, I guess

Not really... I mean, sure, it's possible. But unlikely. Minerva's Den is being transitioned over to Steam and no doubt having the G4WL removed. The guys at Relic have shown they're bloody awesome transitioning CoH1 to Steamworks, so no doubt they'll do the same for DoW2. What else is there? Arkham City? Same as Bioshock 2 - Steam cheevos are already in place, and it won't take much to asign keys to the bought DLC so that they can be redeemed on Steam.
I think it'll be messy, but I don't think it'll be unworkable.
Also, anyone else think the timing of this alongside Jason Holtman taking a leadership role in MS's gaming division is just a bit too coincidental?
