The SmarteCD technology can uniquely encrypt and embed an identifying 'black hole' within the content of each individual product CD resulting in technology that can distinguish an original, properly licensed CD from a forgery. With this level of protection, software manufacturers can effectively render forged application CDs unusable.
At the point of CD replication or duplication, SmarteCD physically alters the CD media preventing it from duplication or digital reproduction. Your products become resistant to 'accidental' unauthorized use and professional piracy, as well as preventing unauthorized users from copying CD-ROM content to a hard drive.

Privately held Smarte Solutions is working with software publishers to incorporate its SmarteCD technology into their wares. Unlike existing copy-protection schemes, which prevent CD burners from copying a disk, SmarteCD allows the user to burn a copy of the disc, explained company President Bala Vishwanath.
The software can be installed from the bootleg disc and will appear to run normally, until the program reaches a point determined by the software publisher. Then the application will halt and present users with an invitation to purchase a legal, fully functional version of the software.

SmartE seems to enter footsteps with Codemaster´s Fade, their ideas seem similar.
Anyone already completed the RLD Release of Dungeon Siege?
EDIT: by sage386

It makes the game crash randomly if you don't use the fixed EXE. By crash, I mean you're going to have to perform a hard reboot. Duplicating a proper mini-ISO is still possible but you have to know what you're doing to ensure that it works as it should, and not actually crash while you're having fun.
