ok i just got my first idevice ever, an iphone 5. i am pretty out of touch because i have tried as hard as i could to not pay this whole culture any attention over the years. now that i am an iphag, i am wearing a scarf and skinny pants, with a doublehalfcaflattemochafrappachino in one hand, and my iphone in the other, and i need app recommendations.

so far i have lots of games, the basics (youtube/fakebook/skype/google apps), a couple different cameras, ifile and pocketcloud. what am i missing?

The reality is that there aren't many non-game apps to reccomend.

Everyone knows about Google Maps, Youtube, whatever.

About the only app I can think of that a lot of people don't have but is worth having are one of the many media player apps that let you play whatever video file you want.

Other then that, most of what one needs is allready on the phone itself.

Plex is very good. Air Video is great too.

I use Flipboard and Readability quite often. TED is great as it allows downloading videos for later watch.

already got punchquest. have only played it for a few mins but it seems hilarious. there are some really unique games using all the sensors in the hardware. tilt to live and zenbound are both standout games in a vast sea of generic crap. if you tried to tell me that tying rope around wood was a fun game a month ago i would have laughed at you. now im at a point where i pity the fool who tries to stop me from tying that shit up.

Leo is right though, i am mainly looking for apps. i know it can do games, and after a life of gaming i am pretty good at finding the ones i like...but i have no idea what this thing is capable of beyond that. i was amazed by vnc/rdp, i just found artrage (a painting program i use on pc), and the music studio/djay apps are mind-boggling. i had no idea any of that stuff was possible.

what about cameras? so far kitcam seems to be the best one i have looked at.
what is the photo editor of choice? i see an offering from adobe, but there must be more from lesser known/overshadowed companies?

edit - flipboard is great Smile

The apps I use very often

Magical Weather [ https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/magical-weather/id396179545?mt=8 ]
The best weather app, methinks Smile

The Vault [ https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/vault-secure-document-data/id436982968?mt=8 ]
Why there is still no full featured "Keychain Access" app Mad

Apple's Numbers [ https://itunes.apple.com/en/app/numbers/id361304891?mt=8 ]
Use it mostly for entering data from water and electricity meters and storing remeasured cooking & baking recipes.

The Photo Cookbook [ https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/the-photo-cookbook-quick-easy/id374473999?mt=8 ]
Great recipes

ok now that i have had some time with the phone under 'real life' circumstances, i have a few more specific questions about rdp and/or vnc as it relates to using an iphone as the client. does anyone know of a client that has back/forth file transfer? i am using pocketcloud pro (and the assistant software on my pc), but file transfer is an extra cost/subscription. i am on rdp right now. i have been meaning to set up a test vnc server but havnt had a chance yet. does anyone know off hand if vnc will have file transfer (and which iphone client specifically)?

also have to throw out a quick recommendation for true skate. easily the best skateboarding game on any platform imo...it lacks 'game' (locations/upgrades/missions are very basic etc), but the engine/gameplay is tighter than a nun.

ok a few more days and some more experience to share. i finally figured out why vpn wasnt working for me. you have to set an ip range for the incoming clients (in win 7 incoming connections properties/networking tab/ipv4/properties) instead of letting dhcp take care of it. not sure if tis just my router or setup, or an iphone thing, but it absolutely wouldnt work any other way. now that i can connect to it, i can see my shares on my home network via any file broswer app that can read lan shares. its a great addition to having full control over the pc via rdp.
