By that ridiculous definition of RPG's, all games are RPG's.

RPG means role playing game, so they can be any and all genres because you always play roles in games. That is why for instance games like mass effect 3 are branded as rpgs. |
You are wrong.
RPG sure means Role Playing Game, but for a RPG video game its kind of different.
What defines a RPG in a Game design:
- Story and Setting(Questing)
- Exploration
- Items and Inventory
- Character Skills
- Experience and Levels
That's mostly the recipe for an RPG.
Lets take for example:
Witcher I, Witcher II, Baldur's Gate, Skyrim, Morrowind, Oblivion, Arcanum, Diablo.
Story? Check
Exploration? Check (some degree)
Items and Inventory? Check
Character Skills? Check
Experience and LEvels? Check
If you are looking for an RPG type of game, you are looking for theses features.
For example:
COD Multiplayer has some RPG elements on it, it doest not mean however that it is an RPG.

Game of Thrones? However, you may not like the gameplay since it is similar to Dragon Age, though Story and characters are very good.

Agreed, that was a good game!
I have just started playing Arcanum, and its the games i have enjoyed the most for a long time! It takes a few hours to get into but then it only gets better and better! (i have spent probably a few hours reading threads about rules etc, but all is kinda simple and all info is out there)
With the widescreen patch it even looks kinda good!

Clearly that's a simulation, not an RPG.

He forgot to add that those elements should be the main focus of the game. I would also add that at least the main character should be indisposable. But yes, XCOM has lots of RPG elements.

None of the ones he listed as disliking could be considered "deifying & defining", beyond Diablo, which is only considered an RPG because it defined the ARPG category (i.e., not actual RPGs).

If you're into oldschool gaming you can find some obscure, and very well worth playing, RPGs by clicking the link in my signature. If you've got to pick just one of them, go with Darklands.
Then, I'd add:
- Age of Decadence: currently only available as a (pretty big) public beta, but already one of the best RPGs I've ever played due to the amazing wealth of character options, multiple approaches, choices with consequences.
- Inquisitor: provided you like the oldschool setup, the setting is awesome, you can play as three different characters with individual quests, NPC reactions, added gameplay elements throughout the chapters. Impressive in spite of its gameplay shortcomings.
- Telepath RPG: Servant of Gods: one of the most impressive indie RPGs I've ever played: great turn-based combat systems, multiple (often non-violent) solutions to quests tied to character skills and choices with delayed consequences.
- Temple of Elemental Evil: since you liked the infinity engine games - probably the best combat system I've ever seen in a RPG, yet you can deal with most situations without resorting to violence (especially the multiple ways you can deal with the various temple factions). Be sure get the Circle of Eight modpack.
Also, if you're into NWN and NWN2, there are tons of modules ranging from good to exceptional - among the NWN ones, I'd definately recommend the Bastard of Kosigan series (choice-wise it blows 99% of RPGs out of the water)

Talk to the hand. |
Very constructive way of replying to a totally legitimate criticism. He's totally right, by the way, since I can't really see how Skyrim and Diablo could be more genre-defining than Fallout 1/2.
