Hey guys.
I am looking to get a graphics card for my computer, The system itself only has 1gb of RAM although good stuff and a 3.2Ghz chip so its no slouch. However this card will pretty much be the last piece of upgrade for my system before I have to get a whole new lot of stuff.
I was going to get (with my price range) either the Chaintech GeForce 6800 GT or the Abit Radeon X800 Pro (both 256mb). The only difference I can see between the two are the prices (GT is about £25 more than X800) and apparently the stated RAM speed of the GT is 1000Mhz as opposed to the X800s 900Mhz.
I have previously pretty much only had ATI cards and they have done me well, but I know the drivers for the Geforces are a lot better.
Which is better in terms of performance, or is there so little in it I should just get the cheaper one?
Thanks guys!

I've tried ATI and GeForce cards..
I got a 6800GT now (had a ATI before)..
And I'm NEVER going back to ATI..
So I would go for nVidia..
I hate you.

Graphics cards are such an emotive subject.
You get more bang for your buck with ati.

most games are optimized for geforce, like bf2 for example.
on the other hand there are also games like counter strike source which run
alot better with ati cards, but theyre kinda rare.

My 9800Pro died on me, and was forced to buy a 6600GT OC. It's outperformed my 9800Pro and was a fabulous bang for my buck. It also meshes better with my Nforce3 Chipset.

Cool, thanks for the replies guys!
I will go for the Nvidia card for a few reasons. The primary being the drivers. I really can't stand the ATi drivers and not knowing if upgrading is going to have a better or worse effect on your card.
Also as someone pointed out it does seem like a majority of games are optimised for Nvidia, so that can't be a bad thing.

I had ATI, and now I've got nVidia... I will go back to ATI as soon as possible... nVidia's drivers are a piece of shit... I have to try three different sets of drivers for most games to run... The newest game with such problems is F.E.A.R. I write games' reviews so I don't have time to change drivers every 10 games... with ATI I never had such problems...

ATi Rage 128, 16 Mb
GeForce 2MX, 32Mb
GeForce 4 Ti 4400, 128 Mb
Radeon 9600 XT, 128 Mb
Radeon 9800 XT, 256 Mb
Those are the gfx crads i´ve had, and to be honest, i´ve hade the best luck with ATi. My GF4 fucked up computer badly, and i have to agree that nVidias drivers sucks :/ Then again, both brands have their pros and cons, and i will keep buying any card thats good, whatever the brand is. As [sYn] stated, God does indeed hate fanboys
Watercooled 5950X | AORUS Master X570 | Asus RTX 3090 TUF Gaming OC | 64Gb RAM | 1Tb 970 Evo Plus + 2Tb 660p | etc etc

Lestat get a 6600GT dont bother with the 256mb standard card the GT is way faster have one running in my rig now (was supposed to be a 7800gtx but got laid off from work on friday so that went out the window) must say im pretty impressed with it for the price runs most games at 1280x1024 with max settings only with the newest stuff do i have to turn down settings but for the money you cant go wrong.

the main reason to go nvidia in my opinion are:
nvidia new cards aka. 6xxx - 7xxx have Pixel/Vertex Shader 3.0 system but ATi has 2.0
and other graphics effects.
like the time goes on, new games are going with these effects. and ATi x8** series cant run these effects, mkay? (for example FarCry with new patch; Fear i guess prolly)

Owning an ATI after a number of years with a number of different nVIDIA cards, I can say that ATI offers much better quality and speed at a fraction of the price. However, I'm experiencing corrupt graphics and distortion and shaders going crazy all too often, so I guess the cheaper models (like the 9800pro that I own) have heating issues. But I wouldn't pay for an nVIDIA card again, in the same way I'd stay the hell off Intel, even though the latter makes more stable processors.
