there is nothing must have about this game.
They've completely fucked it every which way. |
It seems we didn't "beta"play the same game ...
You simply can't tell this if you actually liked the Simcity franchise.
When I played I really felt Simcity flavor, and this for the first time since SC4 no matter what Simcity erzats I tried.
EA certainly fucked it up with they allways online DRM, microDLC game based (read tiny DLC but 20$ though) and Origin only, ...
But gameplay wise, I am sorry but it is just perfect.
If you meant dumbed down game because of no more power lines/water pipes management then I will just say : definitely not a problem.
These micromanagements were fun for the first minutes but became boring fast.
And nowadays, power and water are meant to be settled underground, below road network just like in the game so...
I am afraid I will buy this shit if no yarrred version will be coming,
I want it soooo bad, I want it soo soooo bad !.

I agree, after about 10k people it feels more like SC4 than anything else made.
The regions are small, I'll give it that. but with up to 16 per area..I can overlook that. Since they all run in 'real time', I'm sure all 16 combined will be at least as big as the large map in SC4, just I have the small annoying 'zoom to other part' to get to the other parts of my city. But its surely not any deal breaker for me.
The lack of density types isnt really a problem. since you STILL have them. but you don't plop down the types, you pick them by roads used on them. So i can still make low/med/high density just as if I placed them. Instead of putting low density residential, I just put residential and low density road on it. (which actually makes more sense, since the road access would decide how many people are willing to live on it before traffic makes them move..than the idea that a highrise apt building on a long dirt road would ever even happen).
So all and all, I say its close enough to SC4 that playing kicked in my nostalgia and enjoyment of 4...Sure, sure. its NOT sc4. But I say they could have done FAR worse, and I was pleasantly surprised it was better than I expected.
The online DRM isnt any worse than anno 2070, and other than being reminded by every person that hates it..I never even notice it. So that parts no big deal for me.

Still don't know i've i buy this.
I probably play simcity and enjoy it for10-20 hours, i don't mind spending 30 euro's for this.
I even don't mind the online drm, cause it will probably boost sales, and sales are good for gaming in general (i know i will be flamed for this ).
But I hate to buy a full price for an incomplete game. Dev should make the best game possible for full price, and dlc should be an aftertought, and pc games should be open for modding, compare simcity 4. EA would make a huge profit selling the game this way. But then there is greed.
It is almost certain that simcity 5 will have (in order of appearence), extra region dlc, region dlc's with bigger cities, and when the game is milkled to the bone there will be a terraforming dlc. Stuff that should be in the game anyway. I saw an interview with a maxis guy that was very vague when asked, why no terraforming, why no bigger cities? Is answer was, well, ehhhh, it costs a lot of money doing that. Since that is bullshit, he meant, it will be added later as dlc.

Can you comment about the online aspect? Is it forced on you or can you just disregard it?

Its pretty hands off. At least so far in the beta, its no more than anno 2070 is. There is leaderboards and such if you care to look at them. But for gameplay, If I didn't know, I would have thought it was singleplayer.
You login, and after that you get your region, and your cites just like all the other simcities. There is no forced 'worldwide' economy or trading crap like cities XL has. From what I played, other than its being saved on thier side, its fully single player experience.
I am looking forward though to the 'friends' aspect of it, being able to play regions with friends. But even that would feel like a 'lan game' mode if the old ones had it. Just you and them on the map.

With this map size it's looks like sim-village not sim-city. Are there screens-shoots with big map or view on big city ?

Can't start though. Trying to found out which packets they send. Someone got experience on reversing encrypted packets?
Edit
It creates two HTTPS requests to BETA3-EU-API-1151028596.eu-west-1.elb.amazonaws.com
Packet urls
Code: | Packet 1 -> http://pastebin.com/N0RaT043
Packet 2 -> http://pastebin.com/GbP5X6QG |
Ofcource it's encrypted (HTTP Secure). going to find out a way to reverse HTTPS requests through my own made router with Squid.

The EA cash machine rolls into action once more
Endless add ons, expansions, downloadable tarmac, cement and slates etc, all lining the pockets of those greedy bastards again. Even worse, you need Origin, so no thank you.
Years after the Sims 3 release, along with endless cash milking through add on trash, they still refuse to offer this now 'out of date franchise' at a decent cost, and continue to milk it for all its worth.
Deja Vu?
Up yours EA!

Well actually, No.
Suddenly I had other imported stuff to do, personal reasons. But on the other hand, got the game still running, but not able to do anything.. thats because everytime I click 'Play', this message appears:
Spoiler: | |
So as I assume, they locked all connections from the Beta. Its just, everytime I click play, the two packets I posted here a couple days ago, do requests. I'm a hopeless man in encrypted packages so that leaves me with nothing. Sadly
Well, guess we're just going to wait for something great then. I'm going to release all my grabbed releases in public soon. So maybe some people can experiment with all the exe files in their version. Some include the Origin product key auth protection already.
Edit:
Don't worry about the lines on the screenshot. Its.. like a crosshair for me, in another game
Edit2: I'm NOW (30/01/2013 1:41AM GMT+1) closing my "gayish can't connect Simcity Beta" game

Sim City is a great Single Player game, suddenly and with no need, turns into forced online only (Our HD's can handle saves!)... shame on EA, again and again....

Works for me, not that I agree with it as DRM. But I travel a lot for work..less "copying files to laptop" to get my cities to play when out of town like SC4 was Hell if I could have had SC4 save to dropbox or such I would have done that..lol
Long as they do like other games, and patched down the road as a last patch if they shutdown the online part so it saves locally..I myself don't care where my saves are stored. Not like I go digging around in the files themselves to do anything.
Personal opinion I guess. Im not defending it. As its person by person if they like it. Just saying I cant think of a situation where Id go "This game is fun, but I would enjoy it more if I had more files for it in my HD".
I mean to me if the worst part is "My game saves aren't on my drive" but the gameplay if its done locally or remotely is the exact same, it makes no impact on the game itself. Not like Id enjoy it more if it was saved locally. And that's the point of games to me, How much I enjoy it, not how it achieves that in the background.
So far only thing that bugs me is the zone sizes...But Ill wait and judge once I can get a realtime 16 zone area to see if it really matters. If I have one huge zone in real time, or 16 on the same area realtime might not be that big a deal. The moving the cam to a different one to see my industrial area might be a bit annoying, but Id do that in the huge SC4 map anyway..only difference is one is scrolling over to see it, the other is zooming out and in to see it
How I did it in SC4 anyway, I always had 2 cities..a huge map for people, and on the edge of that, containing my industrial/trash/power area..Just I had to load one then the other every now and then so they 'caught up' on what the other wanted/needed from it. Now I can do them both at once.

Oh..I try not not use steam, unless needed..same with origin
But I deal with it for games that need it, like portal, hl, etc. so Ill the same for SC4 and origin.
Only time I launch steam is if its a game I cant get without steam and Im in the mood to play one of them. I'm not big on the idea of "launch something, wait to login, close ad, goto games tab, launch game"
when I can just buy it as stand alone, install it and "launch game" directly. its not a deal breaker for me, why I still buy portal and HL games. Its just a small annoyance I avoid unless necessary.
