Wow, this is awesome. Never heard about this until I stumbled on this topic yesterday. It looked fun to just launch rockets in space, but docking spacestations and landing on planets is just too cool. I watched youtube vids until 2AM last night.

Our favorite Viking made it to space too

I feel your pain.

I installed this thing almost one month ago and I am still hooked like a child.
Warning this game can have negative effect on your social life.

Very Happy

Finally! After lots of tries, I managed to successfully dock two crafts together. At first, I sent up a very basic craft (one on the left) and parked it in a 100 km orbit. Then started experimenting with fuel amounts, so I have enough to reach the same altitude and have enough to make all the corrections and adjustments to sync the two orbits. Firs tI reached the same orbit, but ran out of RCS fuel to make a successful dock, then I added another RCS tank, but that raised the weight, so I had to add more liquid propellant, etc. Was fun. Smile

I guess all my years of playing around in Orbiter paid off, understanding basic orbital mechanics is quite important to find my way around this maneuver.

Just a bit of fooling around. I used the built-in Mun scenario for landing, I'm yet to even make an attempt at a the Mun. First a good lander, then the delivery vehicle, then the rocket to get into orbit...

Maybe I'll even make it multi-trip, getting the parts up one by one. Anyways, the pics.

You have no idea just how much it's worth it. Smile We have orbital map, a solar system, maneuver planning, etc. Not nearly as detailed or in-depth as Orbiter's simulation, but for a rocket-building game, you can do tonns of stuff.

damn that sounds damn interesting, did they add some kind of meta game yet? I heard something about them planning freight missions with cash you could use for parts and whatnot(could have been some other game though, theres so many lol)

Not as of yet, but there's already foundations for it. There is an amount counter for parts (stands at 999 IIRC) and even cost. Only sandbox is available right now, but there is a campaign option greyed out. I would love to see that in order to save money, we would need to put parachutes on stages so we could recover and reuse them.

Well...I put together a patchwork lander vehicle that is capable of reaching the Mun on its own power (one-way trip). I got there, decelerated for landing, realized that I just started landing in the shadow, so I had no way to telling just how far I was from the ground (altimeter does not go by the ground but by some arbitrary "sea-level"). So I crashed. Next time, I'll bring floodlights. Very Happy

Well, I did it. Went to the Mun, landed and did some EVA with the two kerbals on board. I don't think I have enough fuel to even make it to Mun orbit, let alone get back home. That's for later. Smile

Mods used are the KW Rocketry for realistic looking...rockets (none of the parts are OP, everything is proportional to size and power), and MechJeb since I already know how to get to orbit, so might as well leave it to the auto-pilot (the only part where I used it, after that it was off the whole time).

Initial launch vehicle.

First stage separation, getting rid of dead weight.

On our way to a 100km high orbit.

Revealing the Lander module.

Ejecting the module from the now empty fuel tank with mini-rockets for the separation.

Bit of fuel wasted, but still a decent trajectory. Should have used the maneuver planner.

Mun in sight.

In circular Mun orbit.

Descending.

Waving goodbye to Kerbin, as it goes below the horizon (should have started the descent sooner to keep it in sight).

Getting close.

Almost there.

Final burns.

Wheee!

that.. was me being in rage mode about wasting way too much fuel every single time i lift of to somewhere xD. For me it's accomplishment to even make it into earth's orbit with enough fuel left xD

btw. That covered up landing module from the pics above, is the casing from a mod ? Im using unmoded 0.18.2

Also im yet to try out the whole station refuel, but how does it work. I must somehow send/build a station or there is a mod/scenario where i can just orbit and refuel.

it would be great if there is a mod or something to be able to send parts and construct outposts/stations around planets :>

Yeah, it's a mod called KW rocketry. It's mostly just new fuel tanks and engines (all well balanced for weight/fuel/power to stay true to the vanilla ratios as far as I can tell). The real attraction is that stage separation, it serves no other purpose than to look nicer when you release the actually useful payload.

You have to set purposes yourself
Mines are: satellite orbit, docking, moon landing, space station with refueling capabilities, base on other planets, etc. Hopefully by the time I get to the bases, there will be some cool mods available for that (didn't seem to find any currently?)

I finally got my satellite into orbit. It was shaky and fuel consuming and I had lots of adjusting to do to make my orbit more symmetric. Unfortunately, after I detached my return vehicle, the satellite got marked 'junk' for some reason. So now the orbit line doesn't show up properly in the map Crying or Very sad

Maybe I needed an additional, unmanned pod or something. Would make sense, something has to control it Philosopheraptor

There must have been a door there in the wall, when I came in.

This, you need at least a unmaned probe POD in order to control it. If not it will be called xxxx_debris. You can still activate it by double clicking on its icon when in map view (not in the flight tracker).

I assume you have a docking port on it ? So just launch a probe POD with a dockingport and dock it to your launched "dead" sattellite to regain control of it.

Wink

I'd recommend playing for a while to familiarize yourself with the game, then add things as you get more experience.
