Thats one of the most ridicolous comments I've ever seen Appealing to a niche crowd is what drives alot of devs and this crowd helped build the game for what it is today. |
Uhm, you know that I wasn't saying that NS2 needs to be suited to mass-appeal/broader-audience (= more sales), right?
What I meant was that they should shift their focus, in regards of balancing, away from E-Sports to even more public play. Instead they're trying to suit it for both. Which is impossible.
People actually stop playing the game because of it. It gets boring too fast.
NS1 was like crack for a reason while NS2 is more like a small sugar rush.
They'll drive this into a dead end if they keep this course.. even the full mod support doesn't really pick up. They've aimed for an oldschool formula, longevity... Sorry but curently I don't see that working out. Quite the contrary.
I really hope they did something about it in the new content update.
(Personally, sure, I wish it would work out too. But I'm not blind. This thematic is old, lots of people told them that when it was still in alpha and beta...)

They are giving the community what it want - which is further balancing and teamwork. Now on the contrary to a game such as CS, NS is alot more complex and require its players to actually indulge in teamwork that's what I think its the main problem aswell as NS' mains advantages - it requires alot more from its players and the herp-derp crowd can't figure the game out the first 5 seconds ingame and therefore stops playing. I think the community digs its learning curve and the game's respect for intelligence. Plus I can't seem to see the link between optimizing your game for E-sports and alienating your crowd in this example since the crowd is E-Sport.

The stuff you're implying onto me is hilarious and shows me that there is actually no point in discussing this with you.
I'll try one more time though. Because I'm stubborn.
I don't give a rats ass about the masses that bought the game after it's release. I'm talking about people who played the fuck out of NS1, supported NS2, played NS2 in alpha/beta and are now simply stop playing it because of the direction they're going. Hell, even UWE knows this (propably even best) and tries to assure everyone, everytime, as often as possible, that they'd care for both sides. So how don't you see the link if even UWE addresses it many times?!
The balancing just doesn't work, it didn't with NS1 and it doesn't with NS2. (Pub play and competitive play. Which are still both competitive. The other one more serious than the other.)

If you still don't get it.
Do you really think they give/gave away the new update today and those free gift copies out of the goodness of their heart? (Btw, 50% off sale again tonight). They'll release payed DLC in the future but is it even worth it if there are only 7-10 clans willing to pay for it?
(I sincerely hope that they got the money back they've invested into NS2 and made some extra because I don't think they'll get much more out of it.)

Sorry if I implied something wrong, still I've yet to see anything which supports your claims that the fanbase are moving away from UWE and NS? Well to a certainb extend do they care about both sides I mean you have a complex game which is not getting more accesible but they are trying with tutorials and even have a new system with Gorgeous - http://forums.unknownworlds.com/discussion/128273/new-tutorial-system-for-gorgeous-that-aims-to-make-it-more-accessible-to-new-players.

But they are striving to make it work why not support it and help out as the community already does?

Nah, it gives them some PR and some reminiscence of how gaming used to be :/ but c'mon, only 7-10 clans are playing this competively? EDIT: Didnt see the future in that sentence

Definitely some challenges and I see your point but have the community really reacted negative about the above?

All I'm saying is that it's sad to see that they're riding on a hollywood coke&hookers esque smoke screen of PR. It's sad to see.
They're currently listening too much to their beloved Fana (Archaea) in regards of balancing than old vets from back in the day like HBZ or OldAssGamers for example. Trying to assure everyone the contrary.
And this big E-Sports PR coverage won't hold much longer. I don't think the NSL can keep the top clans interested long enough when the prize money is gone. Which mostly comes from ESL. And according to a long-time personal friend, which happens to be the ESL Pro-Series Product Manager, this isn't a long-term thing. The ESL is struggling for almost 2 years now and are jumping on everything that get's some gaming media coverage (and obviously funds/produces even more of it). ESL is on the brink of bankruptcy. Many SC2 pro-gamers didn't get their prize money for example. That's because they just can't pay them. And if they can't even do that with a behemoth like SC2, how long do you think they'll keep this up with NS2?
It's just sad to see
(Fucking hell, they've sometimes got lower player counts than fucking A:CM.. and that had a license with a fucking huge fanbase in his back and is already dead)
Mutantius wrote: | Quote: | http://unknownworlds.com/ns2/ns2-balance-and-feedback-process/ |

Not directly. But the playercounts shrinking, often even lower than it was in alpha/beta, speak for themselves
And currently.. well I guess it's about 12-15 really active and competing clans. That number was higher once.
*EDIT* I really hope the new update that will be released later this day/night changed something for the better. Because not everyone in the NS2 community (actually, their numbers are even higher) is interested in pure tournament competitive play. I really feel the pain of some, for example, OAG members when they say that you can't even have a good, not too serious, Fun-War anymore because the chances of making a comeback in a match are getting thinner and thinner... completely unforgiving.
Ah fuck it.. maybe I'm just an frustrated idiot who isn't as pleased with NS2's success as I hoped to be.

Yea thats a problem especially considering that blogpost is over two months old.

Well we'll see how it turns out. ESL might create a smaller league with a lesser prize

Let that POS die slowly and painfully trust me Natural Selection 2 will still be here in a month, A:CM? doubtly.

If the community could handle 10 years of dev time, then hopefully they can wait for some patches and decent DLCs in the coming months and hell lets see how Gorgeous plays out.

Haven't even bothered trying out the new update but it's clear they have no clue about what made NS1 such a great game. Of course it's popularity was boosted being a mod to a really popular game but that doesn't change the fact that NS1 was just way more fun.

Eh.
The only thing that made NS1 'more fun' were the higher player counts, and just better maps. The different game modes were nice as well, along with some of the 3rd party levels that were insane some times.
NS2 really isn't as different as you think it is though.

I don't know what it is, but I just can't get into this game.... don't get me wrong it's awesome and all, purdy graphics, and game play seems hella fun, but I just can't get into it like I used to with NS1.
Gawd, I was so big into NS1, we had a server, community, events, competitions, all that fun shit, good times were had. I'll give this another shot tonight I guess, but it will never be the same

Know the feeling, I couldnt get into the beta and the same with the retail game (mostly due to it being choppy and laggy like hell) but I just fired the game up again after the Gorgeous update. The performance increased and the hit detection was fixed at least with the skulks and then it just came back, at least I got alot of kills and won a match or two. Anywho the performance seems random atm since alot of other humpers have horrible FPS even with bigger rigs than mine and I run it flawlessly albeit with lower settings in shadows.

http://unknownworlds.com/blog/beware-shady-key-resellers-and-discount-steam-keys/
Quote: | Recently we asked Valve to deactivate 1,341 Steam keys that were purchased through our website. As a result, some Natural Selection 2 players who were previously able to play the game on Steam are now receiving a “Buy Again” option instead of the “Play” option. This episode is a prime example of why all gamers need to beware discount steam keys and those offering them.
We deactivated these keys because they keys were purchased with credit cards where the card-holder initiated a “charge-back.” A charge-back is a consumer protection mechanism offered by payment companies such as Visa, allowing a card-holder to dispute a charge on their credit card statement. This means we never received payment for the game. In fact, we were charged a fee by the card issuer for the charge-back. For these 1,341 keys, these fees totalled around $30,000.
Right now there are only two official places to buy Natural Selection 2; through Steam or through our website via the Humble Store (The Humble Store option is temporarily disabled due to this issue). If you see Natural Selection 2 available anywhere else — like the many sites out there that sell Steam keys at a discount — then you are not buying it from us and there is no way to know if that key is legitimate. As as result, we strongly discourage purchasing from these sites.
If we offer Natural Selection 2 from other stores in future, we will make a news post informing you of the legitimacy of that store. You can always find an up to date list of authorised stores right here.
We don’t know how exactly these sites obtain their Steam keys. It seems likely that they were originally obtained from our store using stolen credit card information. Keys were then sold through a handful of questionable sites to people using legitimate credit cards. The owner of the stolen credit card ultimately disputed the charge and we lost the sale. In total, we lose ~$45 per transaction of this kind, due to the charge-back fee (~$22 fee + $25 game price). Meanwhile, the unauthorized key reseller kept the money from the player who ultimately received the bad key.
If your key was deactivated, we recommend you contact the site you purchased it from for a full refund. It’s unfortunate that players who believed they were buying legitimate games were hurt by these unscrupulous resellers. |
