Not sure where to put this, but seeing as it's windows 8 related!

I've just re-installed W8 updated windows and all my programs ect..

Running ati beta driver 13.6 and i'm having a strange problem where as my GPU is being used while the computer is idle.
I'll come to my computer and the gpu is being hammered and is at max temperature, until i start to use the computer where it then drops back down to 33% usage.

Any idea what this can be? gpu driver maybe?

Nice to see a update for the protection program for Windows 8, interesting that they made it into a OS update (.MSU) file.

EDIT: And this month's OS improvement update.

The way it has to be. All Windows modules and other MS software should be updated through WU. They should make even DX updatable via WU.

Yeah that would be easier.

Oh and it seems Windows 9 (Blue?) might get released November 2014 with a beta in January.
http://www.guru3d.com/news_story/windows_9_launches_november_2014_already.html

Quote:

According to Win8China, who have provided a number of Windows leaks in the past, Microsoft are likely preparing Windows 9 for a tentative November 2014 product launch, with a beta to be available in January 2014. Now of course this is just a rumor at this stage, however a release scheduled for late 2014 does fit with what we've heard in regards to a yearly OS update cycle for Windows. Windows Blue will be an upgrade to Windows 8 that will be launched this year, while a full version upgrade will come the following year, and naturally November is the perfect time ahead of the holiday season.

Wanted to give my opinion (I REPEAT,MY OPINION) about Windows 8 Professional 64bits after 3 days of usage...ofcourse,activated..

The Good:

-Faster and faster loading/booting than W7 disabling the typical stuff in Control Panel's Functions (tablet PC,etc...)
-Nice Metro UI
-Used Start8 to make it look W7 totally, preventing W8 functions to appear
-Became a Local User (Aka no Hotmail logging and no user screen..boot to desktop inmediatly)
-USB 3.0 drivers integrated (saves a reboot?,nah..)

The BAD:

-Metro UI's Mail function (even if updated from the App Store) did NOT notificated me for new e-mails even if i've set it to warn/notify me whenever something new came up (you know, top right corner)..Logitech's G510 e-mail notification doesn't works with Mail.

-Had to disable something from Execute to make random freezings to disappear (Seems to be a hardware compatibility problem)..W.Update didn't helped in a beginning

-Admin...main problem. Even if you change to a LOCAL ACCOUNT with no password (Again, like i've said,to prevent clicking and writting, direct boot to desktop) and DISABLING UAC..you're still NO ADMIN...i noticed that whenever i had to edit the hosts file..didn't let me save in the same folder..had to do many many things to recover it back, and .bat files that adds stuff to the hosts file,EVEN IF RUNNED AS AN ADMIN (Right click) DIDN'T WORKED AT ALL...This is not like my W7 AIO 32/64bits where you just install the OS,disable UAC and tada,Admin power (aka save hosts file inmediatly,no copypaste)

-Admin,again...If you try enabling the Admin function,so i've read on google,Metro UI and W8 features gets DISABLED until you disable Admin...Not good at all, you're the admin, you're supposed to have what you want, not letting M$ do the stuff for you with maximum trolling..you know what i mean...

-You have to touch things here n there just to make the system become like W7 again...NOT JUST THE START MENU,but deleting a folder deletes it instantly or just sends it to the recycle bin without "are you sure?.." messages..

-Windows games....Where's solitaire?...and the rest??..Not even the market/app store..i think..but still,DAMN...

"If it's not broken, don't fix it"...that's the story for W8..M$ had to touch things they shouldn't've touched at ALL..Hopefully (i think not...) they fix that with W9/Blue...

Maybe there's more problems out there i haven't stepped on or just forgot about them..but still...7/10 to M8...Sorry M$..i'm keeping my W7 AIO Reaction

If I remember correctly on w7 you had to to "take ownership" to edit the host files so it was pretty much the same.

Anyway, if you want to edit those you need to run notepad as an administrator and then open the hosts file.

A bunch of lousy reasons not to use it if you ask me. Give it a chance for a week.

What i do with my W7 AIO is the following

-At the OS install,choose W7HPx64
-No serial insertion
-No password
-Give a PC Name
-Disable UAC
-Use 7Loader by DazLoader and activate W7 (Restarts)
-Install everything

And that's it....once i go to hosts file and open it with notepad WITHOUT ADMIN RIGHTS/RUN AS ADMIN (aka Right click on hosts->Open With->Notepad) and save whatever line i have to say,it instantly saves,no windows prompty then a message saying "You have no permission blablabla" wich only happend to me on W8

Maybe it's because,in the W8 install,i've typed my hotmail address and it tooked it as a "User" and NOT as an Adming...nothing else..even if i changed to Local Account (Metro UI,click user icon at the top right,Change icon, User->Change to Local account (repeate mail, password, then leave the computer name and password as they're (blank password))..the shit kept on happening

Even if i did run notepad as an Admin (Right click on Notepad->Run as Admin) and edited the hosts file, whenever i wanted to save ,instead of saving instantly,a save location window popped up and,if it tried to save the file with the same name it told me what i said before,"You have no permission blablabla, would you like to save it on this folder instead LOOOL!! ?"

Ain't going back,trust me...

Indeed, i didn't encounter the same.
Just open notepad as admin and i was able to edit AND save the file without any hassle in win8 pro x64

Doesn't seem like much but it's a very early version, I'd wait for the official beta or just keep reading online previews and such articles about the OS but there's probably some whom find these build leaks interesting.

Well,i reinstalled 8 on a new TEST PARTITION and did that...Yeah,omg yeah it wooorks yaaaay...*SARCASM!!!* but you have to do this every time you want to edit the hosts file..SURE,IT WORKS...

But here comes the problem...i use .bat files to add lines to the hosts file in order to prevent programs like NERO OR ADOBE MASTER COLLECTION CS6 to reach the fucking internet and preventing the "you have an invalid serial" problem...YES,I DID RIGHT CLICK ON THEM AND THEN "RUN AS ADMIN" but whenever i reached the Hosts file with "open as" (NOT AS AN ADMIN) the supposed new lines that should be there ARE NOT THERE

What i want,AGAIN,is to be able to just right click on the hosts file, open it with Notepad, and edit/save it instantly WITHOUT THE NEED TO GO "Run Notepad as Admin"...i AM THE ONE supposed to be the boss of my Windows 8,NOT MICROSOFT,ONCE AGAIN.

"Doing the run as admin on the notepad in the Metro UI is easy and short, lazy bum"...Duuuuh,yeah,true,but this is NOT LIKE MY WINDOWS 7...and,again, .bat files doesn't works as they should even running as Admin

Want me to post a video or what?...

Also, use google translator and translate the following page wich supposedly has a solution for this problem,BUUUUUT it'll disable MetroUI functions if done...once again,M$ trolls on us

Please post a video to make things clear, as I'm not clear what your issue is.

If you run something as a user (default since windows 7 regardless of what kind of account you have) and try to modify a file that only has admin write permissions you will get an access denied message. If you run as an admin, be it through a bat file or via any other means and do the same it will work. If you have issues, change the write permissions on the file in question. There has been no change of the permissions system since Windows 7 AFAIK.

Ofcourse i'm uploading a video...and will do it for Windows 7 too if you want....infact,you'll see the W8 video here in 30 minutes

It's in spanish (OS) but you'll understand what i mean clearly...

I'll do the W7 one now so you see what i mean, and also point out user accounts and UAC so you understand what i have...i don't like people who says i lie or anything just because i'm spanish and that they make fun out of me...nor that i don't know as much as you guys in these sections so they can take advantage of the situation...

I'm being serious here..."If something works, don't fix it",seems M$ ignored that...even with W9/Blue's new screenshots showing NO START BUTTON...yet i have to do it on W8 using "Start8"

EDIT: in 25 minutes you'll see the Windows 7 one

install that, right click the hosts file and select take ownership. You can edit as much as you want after that. It really is that simple.

Did you even check the permissions? Re-read my post and actually do it. The fact that all you do in the video is open a file as a user and find you can't change it, which as stated is normal behavior and very sensible to remain secure. If you care, change the permission of the file. I just did it, it took 30 seconds and it works, as expected. There is nothing broken here.

Windows 8 - Your notepad is running as a user.
Windows 7 - Your notepad is running as an Admin.

Either change permissions or run the Win 8 notepad as admin.

Sure i can do,like i said, the Notepad as Admin, but i'll try a method that lets you become admin without any permission shit... i think this should work http://www.eightforums.com/system-security/5160-tutorial-how-make-windows-8-understand-you-administrator.html

Yeah I used that myself, by default even as a administrator type account you still require administrative privileges for certain functionality (Such as the command prompt or when you explore system sensitive files and folders.) however do be aware that with that disabled you will be more vulnerable to malware. Smile
(And if you have UAC disabled you are pretty much completely exposed if you do that.)

well surprisingly or not i have been using win8 as main OS for two weeks now:

-only two amd driver to choose from (legacy and mircosoft) legacy has broken hdcp, microsoft has broken opengl. But i installed the legacy, then replaced with microsoft provided one's, and now opengl is working..

-task manager need to be set to "always on top", so if a game hangs you can actually kill the process without restarting because you can't gain focus on the task manager otherwise

-modernui apps are crap, or at least haven't found a single one useful. plus i hate the horizontal scrolling in everything. It doesn't feel natural to me, and thing looks just messy.

-start screen is pretty but less functional than start menu. I'm too lazy to install a start menu, plus afraid of possible bugs with some of those software, aftear reading some drama with them. I can live with the star screen.

-some times the admin stuff in system folders gets in the way which is annoying, when for example, placing a file on the program files folder, like a crack Laughing can be really annoying when setting up the system initially

- had a problem with setting alt tab to my logitech mouse button, had to use autohotkey, some extra setting up like signing ui access and make the executables run as admins to make it work right , but it finally works.

- needed to start in test mode to be able to use daniel_k drivers for audigy 2 zs (4.5), to try a modded catalyst, and some mouse usb stuff. Ffinally ended up always booting on test mode, the warning on the bottom left corner doesn't bother me at all.

-opera needed some setting up (using a .reg and making a fake install) to make it default browser. Opera support for win8 seems to be lacking but i just can't live without that browser.

Maybe i'll finally replace the win7 on my ssd. All of this things, they work without any setting up on win7, so maybe i'm just masochist, or just trying to justify buying win 8 (for 15 bucks tough Laughing)
