I can already picture some people who are playing through the story acting like retards on purpose to annoy those who have to protect them. Or online fags trolling the single-player participants - "yeah, good luck getting through that level without support, buddy - we'll just chill here".

These are practical issues with the implementation of the online enhancements. I don't have ready solutions for those, but they don't automatically make the whole idea useless.

Don't get me wrong, I like the idea in general. Although I don't really see how this is different from objective-based scenarios that are quite popular in FPS's. I mean these can only be specific game missions because I doubt online players will want to replace most of the enemies in a single-player game.
I read a sc-fi book about virtual reality a long time ago where they had some kind of meta-game for all kinds of players. It was like a huge-scale wargame with players acting as commanders playing a strategy game, giving broad orders to tactical level officers who tried to complete them by bossing around infantry, armour and aircrafts all controlled by players directly. I can see many problems with this but I'd love to see something like this work.

I don't believe that I'm the only one that likes to play a game without A-holes I don't know. Yes, I like some multiplayer games and 1 MMO (Not WOW) and I play them a lot. But often I want to play something story driven without any interruption....
So, when a person predicts that every future game will have social elements, I'm thinking, "Did that person completely forget the joy of reading a good book, or watching a nice movie?"

"Social elements" doesn't necessarily mean that you are playing multiplayer or online co-op. Or else they would simply call it.... multiplayer or online co-op. And fuck that shit, I hated the forced co-op in RE5 - that game should be designed around a strong SP campaign.
On the other hand this is an example of a AAA-rated game mentioned in the OP's article that already incorporated social features in its SP campaign: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demon%27s_Souls#Online
Quote: | When connected to the PlayStation Network, online play is integrated into the single-player experience. Throughout levels, players can briefly see the actions of other players as ghosts in the same area that may show hidden passages or switches. When a player dies, a bloodstain can be left in other players' game world that when activated can show a ghost playing out their final moments, indicating how that person died and potentially helping the player avoid the same fate in advance. Players can also leave messages on the floor that can also help others such as forewarning safe or hostile positions, trap locations and tactics against enemies or bosses, among general comments.
When playing with other players, co-operative play allows up to three characters to team up in the host's game world where visiting players appear in soul form that can only be returned to their bodies when a boss is defeated. In competitive play, players can invade a player's adventure as a Black Phantom to engage in combat with the host player. If the Black Phantom kills the host, they can be returned to their body in their own game whereas if killed themselves, the host gains a portion of the Black Phantom's souls. |
I see a lot of potential in the hands of innovative game designers.

this
approval of others and a state of normalcy is a natural need for most people
but that doesn't mean the activity should be encouraged
that is, but definition, an average experience
i don't care and DO NOT WANT anybody to even get the chance to comment on my playstyle
i also do not care what the game itself thinks of me or if i'm "playing it right"
it's much more challenging to set my own goals based on my mood at the time
like stay completely undetected in thief, or on a bad day knock out everyone and drown them in the pool
approval of others, be it friend or game designer, i think is cheap and should only be a reality check in case you need the relationship later
this is why games like deus ex are so great.. it only sets up a very loose framework to play in and the player makes his own rules and the game only comments on them, but does not judge (no mission failed)

False. As revealed in PC Gamer's review billboards ingame will stream ads from EMs servers. There's your online enhancements
And the game will transmit stats and data from your playthroughs to them, so don't think you are not interacting with them either

I'd be okay with every game having Coop in the style of Doom 1 and 2 or Halo where it's not a seperate campaign and there's no benefit from playing coop besides playing the game with your friend. Even if it breaks the balance or causes silly shit, since that's part of the fun

Yeah, that's another big problem. The Bro-couch cancer is spreading faster day by day, and "horror" games apparently are its #1 target (since they're scary so they need to be played with a friend, hurr). Fortunately many first person shooters and RPGs (or what's left of them) are still bro-op free, but the next-nextgen and Kinect 2 are around the corner

games with a heavy story driven narrative will always be relevant. People still like watching movies, Facebook didn't change anything. This is a stupid tail wagging dog argument.

I guess the co-op craze is over and Ubishit was right - next up is the "hyperconnective" singleplayer. The PS4 presentation had a similar vibe, sharing gameplay, helping (annoying) other players, watching other people play live and comment on it (oh the social horror) and much more of this leaderboard crap. And in the long run - directly influence other people's gameplay. A positive side effect is that these "features" will help get rid of tacked on MP and forced co-op modes.
I'm sure publishers understand that some players do not want to socialize and turn off during gaming (in fact thats exactly the reason why many play videogames), not being interrupted by "5 headshots in a row? your friend did better! try to beat him!" but it is counterproductive from a marketing perspective.
Get a connected playerbase and they will make sure your game gets advertised on a mouth to mouth basis, group pressure will get more peers to buy the product etc. Its all free advertisement, using the consumers as willing vessels to spread propaganda about your product . And then one gets the DLC and everyone else gotta buy it too if they wanna keep up.

I've been playing video games since 1982 and I have always seen the single player game as something you sink your teeth into, a decent three course meal you can savor over.
Naturally multiplier games by their nature have a very social aspect to them. Cooperation and sharing is obviously a strong draw for the likes of WOW.
The problem I see from the likes of EA and so on is that the always on connected aspect of online delivery isn't about sharing your experience with your pals on Facebook, but about cynically driving DLC content and enhanced features that are paid for in small bite sized pieces. Suddenly the 60 dollar game becomes 260 dollars.
There seems to be this naive assumption that granddad's like myself will die out and not be relevant, but this also assumes that young pups are gullably stupid and just don't care their being fleeced.
Skyrim, Dishonored, Tomb Raider even DS3 and upcoming titles such as Rome 2 Total War tell me EA and thoses that think like them can kiss my ass.
