http://www.strategyinformer.com/news/22372/american-mcgee-doesnt-see-anything-meaningful-in-the-ps4-simcity-players-need-to-relax

Quote:
American McGee has spoken out about a number of issues surrounding the games community in a recent interview with Forbes. The Alice: Madness Returns creator didn't hold his tongue when discussing DRM, SimCity and the PS4.

McGee responded bluntly when he was asked for his thoughts on the public outcry surrounding the launches of Diablo III and SimCity.

"There are right and wrong ways to solve the problem, for sure. Customers have a right to expect that products they’ve purchased perform as advertised. That being said, developers and publishers face extinction if they can’t solve the piracy issue while at the same time addressing the demands gamers make regarding connected and accessible games (I see these two things going together)."

"Being in China all I see are companies who have solved these issues and customers who are happy with the results. Western developers have some obstacles to overcome before they get there. Not sure I see how incendiary media coverage or player reactions are warranted when things don’t work as expected," he continued.

"Do gamers or the media think EA or Blizzard wanted things to go so badly at launch? Do they think all the screaming and gnashing of teeth actually helped resolve those issues more quickly? There’s got to be a balance to the relationship."

"Just because you’ve given a restaurant your business doesn’t entitle you to throwing molten cheese fries in your waiter’s face if your margarita comes out frozen instead of on the rocks. People need to relax a little and stop turning everything into World War III – Gamers vs. The Man. There are no winners in that scenario."

The PS4 also came up in McGee's chat; a console he doesn't seem excited to try.

"I was hoping for innovation in control input. Didn’t see anything meaningful, so 'meh'” It’s nice that they’re moving towards what looks like more developer-friendly hardware and indie friendly distribution. Remains to be seen if the appearance matches reality. Overall, I think this generation of consoles will struggle painfully against the momentum of mobile/online games we’re seeing globally."

Strong words. Do you agree with McGee's sentiment?

Yeah - it's rumbling. I don't know how far it was edited at the end but it's just random. He doesn't give any answers just some statementes out of general context.

For example:

[quote]"Being in China all I see are companies who have solved these issues and customers who are happy with the results. Western developers have some obstacles to overcome before they get there. Not sure I see how incendiary media coverage or player reactions are warranted when things don’t work as expected," he continued. [/quoted]

It's just random. He didn't even elaborated how the companies in China overcome those obstacles. Just random phrase. Overall worthless.

Oh. And margarita in a restaurant doesn't cost 60€ and if food comes undercooked or otherwise uneatable you can complain about it.

This is the only industry where the producers look down so much on the consumers. It's like they think they're entitled to our money by default.

It's the entertainment industry as a whole, not only the gaming industry. Everyone else is working hard at convincing why you should chose their product over the competition. Any other industry offers incentives for their customers: discounts, freebies, samples, anything that would make you to chose their product and not one offered by a competitor. And those things are usually well researched.

To be fair, I'd hate my target audience too if it was the CoD generation (which most AAA games are aiming for as the main demographic). Laughing

He's right to an extent; EA didn't want what happened with SimCity. That being said, just because they didn't want that to happen doesn't mean they don't deserve any backlash. If a consumer purchases a product they should receive a working product. If when I spent $70k on my CTS-V Wagon and the clutch was burnt out and it threw a rod i'd expect my money back, nor would I expect to wait more then a couple of days to receive that money back. This can be transferred to any sort of product and/or service. I don't pay $1k to have a Zenith serviced only to receive it back running +30 seconds faster and with a nick in the casing.

The old school big publishers are failing because they can't meet the expected service of the consumers, and it is inept to think that the consumers are expecting too much. We aren't. We just want a working product.

That's the problem with entertainment industry nowadays, especially the game industry. You have less and less ways to try the product you might or will pay for. The demos for PC are rare gems from AAA publishers (not devs, lets not mistake them). You are being stripped from the possibility to resell the product you have paid for. And more frequently you receive unfinished and untested product.
