|
 |
So after BioShock Infinite, I am trying to reflect how many games have really had a lasting effect on me, especially in recent years, where gaming has become very stale for me, perhaps to the point of no return. How many games have made me stop and think about the game after finishing it?
The ones I can think of from the last five years are
Braid
Red Dead Redemption
Portal 2
Max Payne 3
BioShock Infinite
My all-time favorite is, as always, Another World, which I had the pleasure of replaying a few years ago in the recreated version and it was as good as ever.
Not surprisingly, these are also among the few I have actually bothered to finish recently as well. I have completed others as well, some quite long (like Skyrim, AC2, etc), but I cannot say that beyond perhaps a technical marvel at their technology, they'd be with me for the years to come.
Some of the games I have listed above, I may not even play them once more due to many different reasons. From experience, replaying something that you are fond of can be a dual-edged sword - you may enjoy it a lot or you may remain truly disappointed with something that up until that point you remembered as majestic. Several movies fall in this as well. Other reason may be the sheer overwhelming of the game. For example, I am not sure I would ever be able to bring myself to replay Red Dead Redemption once more, because all the memories quite frankly overwhelm me.
And while I don't mean multiplayer titles that one plays for 200 hours, that is just my opinion of "memorable". I am sure there people out there that have profound experiences with Battlefield 3 which may leave them with lasting memories. Others may find their adventure in their favorite MMO title to have struck with them for years.
What do you think? What game has been such an emotion experience for you that you still remember it vividly? Games that you feel will be with you for many years to come? I'd love if people could share theirs.

Probably KoTOR 1, Max Payne 1 and V:TMB. There are lots of games which I liked, which made a good impression, but I consider those 3 games the most memorable ones I've ever played.

in terms of gameplay, these are also my two most profound experiences in recent years.
kingdom of amalur has its moments with the story the talking stones tell, but the mediocrity of the rest of the game kind of balances it all out into something average at best.
xenogears on playstation had some really long dialogues in it, and i remember one of them having a lot of impact and meaning for me at that point in my life.
i felt terrible after seeing all the shit thats happened to max payne. running through his house hearing his wife and baby screaming was quite a 'real' moment and was very intense.
edit - i forgot to mention morrowind. i dont think i have ever felt more immersed in a game than morrowind (stalker is a close contender). there wasnt a lot of emotionally profound dialogue or life altering twists in the story, but something about dat world...
edit 2 - gothic 1 and 2

Max Payne 2 improved story telling and improved gameplay over the first.
Hype the time quest (played it before zelda, never owned a n64 ) the entire enviroment in the game, the story, the gameplay... made the kid me feel all AWESOME
Bioshock Infinite is tied with dishonoured tight gameplay in a story driven fps is a must now for me. Thought that the core gameplay ideals slowly died in the past 10 years. But these two proved that you can have a great story in a pew pew game.
Deus Ex 1 and HR - the atmosphere and the gameplay and the story were so well put together it's a shock that after so many years a proper deus ex game actually came out.
Mafia - hands down the best sandbox game ever. It has the serious story element you'd expect from r* games. and it has the perfect gameplay that gta servies haven't seen in the past 3 instalments.
Monkey Island 1 2 and 3 - story just drew you in.
Grim fandango - same as mi 1 2 3
mario galaxy 1 and 2 - just pushed the boundaries of level design and with tight gameplay it was a dream to play.
Portal 1 and 2 - the writing, the level design and the atmopshere.
I would add half life 2 into the mix but the main story was weak, and once you got pass the newness feel of it, the gameplay was very scripted and it didn't give me the wow factor then. I liked it only cause others liked it. It's a solid game but underneath it all it has the whole lazy didn't-want-to-bother feel. They could have done so much more. But they left it behind.
most games for me are like books. It needs to read well, it needs to hold well and it needs to have that factor that will keep me going through page after page. Most games nowadays don't give a fuck about stories. And games like tomb raider show that. Bi-polar writing is evident in many of todays games. Characters who are in there just so your character doesn't talk to her/himself. No real depth to any of them. if only the gameplay is phenomenal it'll still have my attention but i'll skip every cut scene. (DMC lol)
Over the years games that I do remember have left a mark. There's a lot. Most of them excel in writing, gameplay or both. Descent series, kings quest series, hugo games, every mario game I played, every zelda game I played, every metroid game, ever ratchet and clank game, every puzzle game I tried and failed at. Even if i played them for a moment there was something in there that made you, the player, feel some sort of a connection with the main character, I'll remember them for a long ass time and all the games I have listed have had that one or both factors in place.
The first time I encountered 40 enemies in serious sam was wow. But after the 5th time i encountered 40 enemies I was bored. It did have the tight gameplay, but it was running on a gimmick that I didn't really enjoy. But if someone tells me the just want a simple shot em up fps for the brain-dead i'll recommend serious sam 9/10 times.
Even most of the "AAA" hardcore games can't hold it together these days. It's annoying. It's like the industry as a whole (video game, movie, music, etc) is filled with brilliant writers and yet they go inhouse half the time. Many games would've been improved if they had hired some brilliant writers who still write today. It's frustrating.

max payne 1 and 2, those games really set the bar on storytelling and emotion. such a pity max payne 3 shat sideways on all that stuff, in favour of just focusing shooty gameplay. and it WAS really great shooty gameplay, but the story, characters, concepts.. everything unrelated to putting da bullets in da bad guys, was a complete failure.
spec ops: the line, for its amazing narrative and character arcs, as well as for trying to do something different with war shooters.
witcher
fallout 3... not the story, but just the world.. that game left me so utterly drained. in a good way
alan wake. that game was just fantastic. dark, intriguing, atmospheric, haunting... i loved it.
also, honorable mention goes to quake. i think quake is one of the games that will always have a special place in my heart for everything it did for gaming, and just what a massive EVENT that game was on my gaming timeline.
oh, and soldier of fortune. if youve played it, you know why

The Witcher
System Shock 2
Mafia
Fallout 2
Arcanum
Morrowind
KotoR
Planescape Torment
Vampire: Bloodlines
Grim Fandango
The Longest Journey
Machinarium
The Walking Dead
Portal 2
Deus Ex/HR
Max Payne 1/2
STALKER SoC/CoP
(I've tried to keep it short, with not very successful results I have to admit)
As expected, recent games are definitely the minority here. Had to keep many excellent games out, which had great gameplay and story, but didn't give me that profound touch that we're seeking here.
Bioshock Infinite so far is doing very well, probably will manage to get in.

Well im gonna mention one that captivated me like hell, in an emotional sense, Darwinia, i dont know why but i found the ending, the story and the message behind it extremely satisfiying and i did got overly emotive over what i felt in the game.
After that i can mention that Braid left me in awe, it was an unique experience. I cant believe a lot of people never finished or analized it. It was theeeeee game.
OMG, 7 days a stranger, a point and click game from Yathzee, the whole fucking series was AMAZING, rarely i hear anyone talk about it, its fucking brilliant. the whole damn series is unique, FUCK Downloading now.

I see a lot of people mentioning the Witcher, but not Witcher 2. I was under the impression the sequel was better and more well received?
I have yet to finish the first game and never played the 2nd so I'm just curious.

well i guess its down to personal opinion, but to me i just loved the atmosphere and the story and the characters of the first one... it was a wonderful self-contained and satisfying full story with an epic ending (i thought)
witcher 2 looked amazing, and was fun and entertaining and all that, but it (to me) never hit the same high-notes as the original.
great game, but just not as memorable and as stunning and evocative for me as the first was.

Interesting, I was actually considering skipping Witcher 1 entirely and just jumping straight to 2 since like I say, I thought it was meant to be better - particularly the combat mechanics, which is what put me off the first game.

Shadow of Colossus, Dark Souls.
I would say both Bioshock and Infinite as well, but when compared to Shadow of Colossus and Dark Souls, it is just not there yet right now.

A game capable of producing that kind of feeling on me generally has a very strong narrative/story component, or in default of that, it has to be very richly atmospheric. So it's not necessarily a game placed higher than any other on my best-ofall-times list, but it's just that the story/narrative and/or atmosphere felt so good that it made me think of the game frequently after having finished it. Not many games have managed to do that on me but let's see:
Half-Life (my #1 game of all times)
Grand Theft Auto IV (my first and only GTA, that's probably why)
Mass Effect 2
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl
Mirror's Edge
Super Mario Bros. 3
There are still many classic games in my backlog waiting to be played, like Mafia 1 or The Longest Journey, which I see mentioned here more than once. I still need to finish BioShock Infinite to see if it's fit for the list (BioShock 1 doesn't really fit on that list for me, it was an amazing game and probably on my top 10 ever, but it doesn't evoke that powerful of a feeling).

If it's about games that truly made me think about what I just played?
Another World is one, definitely. Braid, Portal (both of them) are certainly on my list. Max Payne 1. Going back to last century ( ) Fallout 1 is at the top of my list. What got me most about the 90's were the adventure games. Broken Sword, Grim Fandango, The Longest Journey, Toonstruck (<3). Myst and Riven as well.
Some of these for their stories (and presentation thereof), some of them purely for the way they made me think. Mind you, I played most of them at their release dates (the one exception being Myst, that must've been '94) so I was pretty young for the earlier ones.
If I go broader than that and just look at games I'll never forget, that starts to include games such as HL1, for being what it was (and the resulting countless hours I spent in CS and other HL mods). Same for the Quake games. Little Big Adventure 1+2, Deus Ex. The list then also starts to include a bunch of console games. Zelda on the NES because that was my first console + game, ever (yes, I played Zelda before I played Mario). Lufia on the SNES. That list is a lot longer
Most of these had fantastic gameplay, good stories as well but none of them gripped me to the point where afterwards I sat down and went "wow..."
Here's hoping that Bioshock: Infinite does that to me as well, the 10 minutes I played last night started off very well at least.

Nothing will ever beat what I felt for HL1.
But here are a few others I haven't seen listed:
MGS1 & 2 (the only ones I've been able to play anyway). Mindblowing games.
Alice: Madness Returns. I couldn't stop thinking about the art I've experienced in the game.
TWIN PEAKS is "something of a miracle."
"...like nothing else on television."
"a phenomenon."
"A tangled tale of sex, violence, power, junk food..."
