Same here, never even got to a main boss or whatever it is after the 5 or 6 dungeon levels in the start. Last part before the skull was way too difficult, and i usually manage hard games.
I gave up after consistently dying all the time at levels 3-4. 50% of time during boss battles, 50% other mobs. Only very few times god to level 5 (when I got lucky, and got easier lvl3-4 bosses). Never seen any 5th level bosses.
It's not just difficulty, it's boring going through easy 1-2 levels and then getting blasted at 3-4levels, and then repeating whole process again and again, etc...
I put in over 60 hours and only beat the final boss twice, only got to her 4 or 5 times, still haven't unlocked everything. Every time I died I wanted to start back up again.
One of the best games of 2011. Already bought the add-on
It's mostly down to luck as I see it as those four times I've finished the game so far it's only been due to really good items appearing, some skill is involved to avoid getting hit but you won't manage at all if you don't get any decent items as I see it.
(It can probably be done somehow but the difficulty level is probably way extreme compared to getting a decent stat boost or different abilities via those special items.)
I put around 65 hours into it and actually finnished it 6 or 7 times, unlocked all characters except one. But all in all it was luck in getting proper items and sometimes imba configurations of them.
Oh and they've redone backgrounds so now they are more fit with the level you are on. And added atleast one door with spikes that takes half heart to get through.

Edmund McMillen's cult hit The Binding of Isaac is being remade by a new team courtesy of a to-be-revealed publisher. The goal is to bring the remake to consoles and PC some time next year.
"It will be a new game with all new graphics, music, etc it will also feature an expansion sized pack of all new content, bosses, characters enemies, items etc," McMillen described. In addition, the remake is expected to add local co-op.
"The remake will be more than just an expansion," McMillen said on his Formspring account (via Game Informer). "The whole game will be remade and rebalanced."
McMillen says that he is aiming to release his game on all of the platforms, and Sony has already expressed interest in having the title. Microsoft apparently also wants the game, "but only time will tell if anything gets signed." Nintendo previously refused the game, due to its religious content.
The remake will also arrive on PC, but because it is a totally different game, "there will be no compatibility" with the original release. Save files will not transfer, and a new purchase will be required to access the new content. The game will arrive in 2013 at the earliest. "The game isn't in full development yet," McMillen revealed. "I would assume if it starts soon it will probably take 9-12 months to finish."
I told him yes, but I had a few strict guidelines to make sure an Isaac remake was perfect. I wanted the game to feature the second planned expansion that I couldn't do in the Flash version, I wanted it to feature local co-op, I wanted the graphics to be totally remade in 16-bit but still look and feel like the Flash version, and finally, I didn't want to deal with anything when it came to business. Nicalis has agreed to these terms, and development has started on The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth.

This game has been one of the best bang of the buck i bought last year, i have played it for about 200h. It never gets old, the mechanics are good, randomness keeps it fresh and you can play it for 20min and be done with it, if you don't have a lot of time.
I have reported that in the thread about the new game.
Tremendous success but keep in mind that ~400k copies were sold through Humble Bundle for as low as a tiny fraction of $0.01

but the Avarage amount people gave for the boundle was around $6.70 ,for the whole Boundle, yes, but far more then one cent, and yes,you needed 1$ at minimum for Steam
I thought that Steam keys were given out for at least 1 dollar?
Not at the time I believe. I think this was enforced later.

in other news Florian (original programmer for isaac) got a new pc and found a way to open/update the old games fla files (kinda, it still breaks 80% of the time).hes been playing a lot of rebirth these days and was jonesin to work on the game again, he came to me a few weeks back with an swf with a few modded bosses that he then called “eternal bosses” white over powered bosses that play very differently. he made so many i thought it might be cool to attempt to patch the old game with anew “hard mode” that will feature tons of new eternal bosses, enemies and a few other little features that will keep skilled players on their toes.
this update will be free, but will only update for those of who own wrath of the lamb. not sure when he will be done, but its a very nice update for the 1000s of people who still play the classic game daily.this update will also feature tons of bug fixes that florian hasnt been able to fix for a long time.
here is a lil video of the update in action (god i hate looking at my old art)
