I was bored yesterday so I decided to bench my Vertex 4 128GB with Microsoft stock drivers and the latest Intel RST v12.6.0.1028 (I flashed OROM to 12.6.0.1826).

The thing about the Vertex 4 is that it's not a good drive to bench since it's tuned for situations that benchmarks never test. Among other things it's got a very aggressive GC meaning it will start very very soon after a write/delete, and benchmarks (AS SSD and ATTO) Write/Delete before testing Read speed.

Anyway, after totally removing and cleaning the system of any Intel drivers (followed a guide to remove IaStorF and IaStorA since they're still left in the system after an uninstall) I ran each test three times, added the results for each category and divided by 3 to get an average in both AS SSD and ATTO. Then I did the same after installing Intel RST v12.6.0.1028. This is the result:

Slightly underwhelming but I guess the drivers are more about sending/receiving requests in a timely fashion and talk to the AHDI-controller chip on the SSD(or any AHCI-SATA device) and create a link to RAM. MSAHCI is simply generic to support drives on any chipset and device combo while Intels RST drivers can drop a lot of checks and bloat and do certain things a bit more effective. But they're really not having much of a noticeable impact on general performance with single-drive AHCI SSD's. RAID on the other hand...

RST used to be slower in fact. There's a reason it's not part of any guide for SSDs anywhere Wink

Well, with Intel RST drivers (I didn't install the full setup package, I just extracted the driver folders and used Device Manager to install the Intel drivers since the applications installed can actually have a negative impact on overall usage performance) it's on average a few % faster on my particular drive (some tests showed more of a difference than others), but I'm using the bleeding edge versions and even replaced the OROM (AHCI/RAID Sata-driver module) in the latest stock bios which originally had v10.x.x.x OROM.

Tip: it's always best to use drivers from the same generation as the OROM, ie. if you have OROM 11.5 you should use Intel RST 11.5-11.7.

Anybody know of a disk/ssd benchmark that doesn't automatically do both read/write testing?

12.6.0.1028 x86/x64 drivers-ONLY (no bloat, just the driver):

If there's anybody out there with a Sabertooth P67 (B3) I have the updated flawlessly working latest BIOS with the new AHCI/RAID module baked into it:

It's easy as pie to take a H/P/Z 6-, H/P/Z 7-series board and upgrade the AHDI/RAID Sata module.

Here's a guide to hwo to do it plus links to all the necessary tools: http://www.win-lite.de/wbb/board208-specials/board281-bios-bios-modding/16658-bios-modding-how-to-update-pci-rom-modules-of-an-ami-phoenix-award-bios/
