Yeah, NASA colours their images Sad Still phenomenal imagery though... that 2nd one is over 1200 miles wide ... that's an insane scale to think of Surprised

On cosmic scale, the size is not that impressive. The Great Red Spot on Jupiter can swallow the Earth twice. Now that's a big ass storm. Smile

What's more interesting is the pattern that forms around the north pole. It's a persistent hexagon.

Yeah but for some reason, my brain refuses to accept scales of that magnitude xD It's like that GIF that starts off with a picture of a human then it zooms out and shows a building, zooming again to show mountains and eventually it just keeps going until you see Sol being nothing but a pixel in comparison to the rest of the universe Laughing

It's a humbling thought, that's for sure. People have problems imagining the distance between planets. Interstellar? No way. Intergalactic? Meltdown. Very Happy

We can measure it, we can quantify it, but sure as hell we cannot really comprehend it without comparisons in our everyday lives. We can use the orange-in-NewYork-apple-in-LosAngeles analogy all we want, that does not get us any closer to really comprehending the sizes involved. Smile

EDIT: it seems that the original of that high-res closeup of the center is grayscale, that's why it was false-colored. In fact, I've seen grayscale pics of these I link here, so it's possible that even these are colorized.

Well, to be fair, these pictures are mostly made for scientific purposes and distinguishing between lower and higher altitude clouds in a color-coded/visual form is more useful than watching graphs.

I would guess that the picture was just pretty, therefore ready for public consumption. Smile
