why would i use a wiki? is the game so confusing and disjointed that i won't know where to go?

Yes, according to some it's impossibru to complete without using the wiki 
But rest assured that if you use it it doesn't count as cheating

wiki is usefull for explaining humanity, weapon leveling, stat scaling to weapon etc. also its almost impossible to get in area with no option to return, you must be dumb as fuck or know the game and exploit it.

the game isnt disjointed at all and most npcs will point you in the right direction it's just a matter of paying attention and not being a complete retard

What are some fun builds? Last one I did was a dex/Iaito build and that was a fun weapon to use. But Ive never bothered with strength based weapons since they're so slow. Figured I might give a str build a try.

Spellcasting always seemed kind of clunky to me in DaS and DeS. But i guess its worth a try.

Due to my experience with this game I am a bit sceptical about praising the "total freedom" of character development in "Dark Souls". I played it for a long time and did not finish it because I could not beat the final boss.
Even if the game is a 3D action-role-playing game, its also a sword(or melee-weapon)-fighting action game. And the sword-fighting part is absolutely required to be mastered by the player, otherwise you have no chance to beat it.
Sure, you can skill your character to some type of wizard, healer, even a ranged weapon-fighter (there is a very interesting unique crossbow to get) and while these builds may be suitable for most parts of the game fighting standard enemies, the melee-fighting part (and the skills required for that) is absolutely required for the boss-fights. And then you are lost when you turned your character into a "pure" wizard or "pure" ranged-weapon-fighter. Then you need the sword-fighting skills. Most bosses you can only beat in close combat.
So maybe you can skill mixed-type build like sword+magic or sword+crossbow or sword+healing, but believe me, without close-combat-skills you are lost. I tried it.
And regarding the use of the wiki: I think in "Dark Souls" many useful items and secrets are so incredibly well hidden, that its almost impossible to find them without "hints".
Just my two cents...
