I usually find Joe just annoying, but his rant is so well placed here. Sadly, I'm sure they'll still sell enough.

IF thats true, what the fuck is going on? How can a retailer dictate the content of a game?!?
The guys at 4A Games must be pissed, i cant imagine that they wanted this, the devs are always on the short end of this stuff.

I don't believe that it's fully accurate but I do believe that larger chains (Gamestop, BestBuy and such.) can make certain demands, especially from smaller or otherwise less established publishers.
(Unsure if Microsoft and Sony have anything to do with it, having issues with launching on Playstation or the XBox is a pretty serious problem if so but I don't think they would be that demanding.)
Similar to how a ESRB rating of AO is avoided at all costs due to the same big retail chains normally refusing to carry games with such a rating.
(AO is a bit more relaxed by now I believe, some very strong content or very sexual content is required before you hit that level but I could be wrong.)

Yeah, it's odd if you think of this as a game, but if you think of it as an "entertainment product" then it's not without precedent. US cinemas, for instance, used to have a lot of power with the content of films, since anything that was rated NC17 was seen as damaging to box office takings.
Back to Last Light, I'm disgusted but not surprised - since the whole kerfuffle with Game (or whoever) stopping the pre-ordering of Bethesda games on Steam (even though they used Steamworks), it's been fairly obvious that retailers have no interest in the consumer, beyond taking them for as much cash as possible. Actually kind of why I like Steam - they're at least not wholly anti-consumer, as can be seen with their pre-order discount for Last Light if you already own 2033.

Yeah digital distribution has a lot of potential and is growing fast though it seems to be more and more aligned to a certain "platform", Steam mainly but Ubisoft and EA have their own solutions now and more might follow later.
(I don't really mind Steam that much, rules are strict of course but it's fairly secure and constantly updated.)

Reading the lines of this review, and between them, it seems they pretty much derped the title in its second iteration.

I wouldn't think much of any review that claims how Metro 1 had "survival elements". It was a rather straightforward shooter IMO.
