Personally I didn't play anything that was memorable to me after 2005. While there were tons of games prior to that. Sure, some okay'ish stuff here and there but nothing with impact.... for 8 fucking years.... there's nothing I'll fondly remember in 5-10 years from now that came out in those. |
Talk about The Darkness 1 or Red Dead Redemption... The Darkness. I have to replay it twice each year |
Those games had absolutely no impact on the whole gaming industry whatsoever. Except for the money in the bank. I'm talking about real important stuff which defined genre standards, innovation or technology. And there is none.
Maybe Minecraft, because it gave the indie scene alot of attention (which it deserved for years even before it).
What else is there? The last game that had a massive impact was fucking World of Warcraft (and I hate to say that.. because it's also one of the worst things that happened to gaming). And before that were the Quakes, Half-Lifes, UTs and Starcrafts (ofc many more... even on consoles... yes, i said it... and look at series like FF are now for example... what they became ) and all that came out of those. May it be the explosion of the modding scene, mapping scene and advancements in Multiplayer in general. All the great defining RPGs which every PR guy nowadays pulls out of his ass because "their games are inspired" by them (which is always a load of bullcrap). And many many more things.
What did we have in the last 8 years with such an impact? What is there that won't be forgotten in 10-15 years that came out which is comparable? (Oh, ofc they'll come up every so often. But for a whole different reason... they'll be mentioned because of all the money they generated. That's the great thing they'll be remembered for... fucking disgusting). It's standing still. Damn, they're remaking game over game from the past and violate their legendary names to gain some cash, serious case of necrophilia... hell, there are games from back then which weren't even considered "that great" but are praised like jewels now... because 90% of the stuff we get today is so bad... just some quick mindless injections... they are like Michael Bay movies. Ofc, I would be lying if there were no good games at all in the last 8 years. But they are so tiny in number that they become insignificant again which is absolutely not what they deserve....
Gaaah... I'm doing the very same thing again... the very same thing I did several times on here already and I don't even know why I'm still doing it... and now I'll say "it's because it's just so frustrating".. When will it finally end
Oh gaming... why did you become so fucking massive... I just wanted you to be a bit bigger... not so big that you're trying to cater to everyone and his dog.. just a bit. For a bit more acceptance in this world. The only good thing about it is alot of new jobs for people... but even those are getting treated like dirt more and more... I guess it's just capitalism having it's way. Riding it until it's broke and then moves on to something else when there is nothing left... |
You sir just got a clap from me! Not THE clap... that would be just silly

There's a difference between you appreciating impact - and no impact. For every success - there's impact. For every huge success - there's more impact.
Call of Duty, Battlefield, Fallout 3, Skyrim, League of Legends, WoW, Bioshock, and on and on and on.
All of those games have had a big impact on the gaming industry.
Oh, you're talking about innovation? Well, you can take anything and twist it slightly and call it innovation - or you could remake ancient concepts and call it innovation. You can pretty much take any game from 1990+ and trace it back to something in the past.
That makes it a futile discussion unless we're really seeking to understand each other. I'd be happy to understand what you're talking about - but there are games coming out each and every year that have a major impact.
Of course, it's all about money - but then again, it was always all about money. The scale of it has just increased - and the audience is so much bigger.
But publishers wanted money back in 1990 as well. They wanted as much money as they could get their hands on.
If you're 18 years old - then a game like Battlefield 3 will have A HUGE MAJOR IMPACT on you. Bioshock Infinite will be a BIG FUCKING DEAL. Because you're young and you haven't seen that much.
We old grumpy guys will react differently - and we won't be all that excited. But to deny impact is a delusion.

I'm sure he'd like THE clap as well
@ m3th0d: perhaps you didn't like them, but the Batman games for example I'll certainly remember. Same goes for the Shift games for example. Or DX:HR, which I will remember as "that thing that looked like absolute failure and another disgrace to the Deus Ex name..until I played it".
There's certainly not as many as a decade ago, but there's still plenty of games.
And if you're looking for games with impact, the Batman games revitalised beat 'em ups with a better control scheme than ever before (aside from the top quality voice acting, writing). Shift, as hated as it is, put the arcade/sim blend back on the board properly. Again, there's fewer of them, but they are there

You will see big differences in aliens behaviour and level lightning. Yeah, really, I'm liking the game now. Hope another patches to follow and improve it even more.

Maldo has good comparison shots: http://maldotex.blogspot.com/2013/05/aliens-colonial-marines-launch-post.html
Quote: | I made a lot of screenshots of Aliens Colonials marines comparing the game in release day versus current state post patches. Patches have included a lot of improvements. All textures are now four times larger (diffuse and bump textures). A lot of new specular textures have added. New light points. New fog zones. Color grading. Ambient Occlusion. Chromatic aberration. Selectable noise filter. New effects and more. |
Still, the updated graphics are only serviceable, not good or great.
