Bot my Vertex 2E and Vertex 4 are working the same as the day I bought them. Whenever I need to reinstall Windows on the V4 I do a secure erase to reset every single MLC cell which puts the drive into "brand new" state with performance at top. Not sure it's really necessary since the V4 is rather special in the way it's GC works though. But a secure erase is just a single write cycle/clear so it doesn't hurt to do one. All Sandforce and driver with other controllers should always be secure erased when a reinstall is needed. They tend to become a little slower/less effective with time.
Most manufacturer offer SE-tools, otherwise there are generic tools that send the SE-command. Some drives (crucial M4 for instance) doesn't even support secure erase for some weird reason. I guess using a tool that writes zeroes to every cell is the only way to emulate secure erase.

Hmm. It's either the HyperX or a, surprisingly, cheaper 120GB V300. OR! A second 570 for my rig. I'm actually leaning towards the 570, to be honest, a pair of these would put paid to any performance woes I seem to constantly have, though it would be tight on my TX650v2.

A 570 eats quite a bit more saus, can't compare.
You'll be fine though Sabin, that PSU can handle that easily.

Really? I thought the newer ones actually used less power

No, newer ones do not use less power, they'll do more with the power they have.
Plus, the 570 is still a big chip (it's more than twice as big as yours).

840, the pro is 512mb
its only cheap cos...
1: i can claim the VAT back (20%)
2: samsung are going £50 cash back on the 840 500gb
Also for comparison i paid £291 for a 160gb Intel x25-m back in 2009

Free tip for people: IF you can still find the Samsung 830, buy that instead of the 840.
The 840 Pro is overpriced as fuck considering it has pretty much same specs as the 830 and the normal 840 is worse than the 830 lol
What were they thinking... apart from profit ofocurse.

Had a Vertex 3 128gb for a year and half. Ran good, never had any problems. Sold it off and bought a Sandisk Extreme 2 256gb as I needed the extra room, and the overall performance of the Extreme 2 is outstanding along with being reliable.

WOW.
okay windows boots so fast.. you see the gigabyte logo, then black screen for 1 second or less., then im in windows
then i booted up natural selection 2. Previously, just entering the game would be like 10 seconds of chirping on the old 10K rpm raptor. Now its, double click, main menu
The game load, used to be around 1.30 seconds of constant hard drive tear. Now its like, loading screen, then instantly precaching. 2 seconds later im in game.
I will measure exact time since i have the same win7 install still on the raptor.
But the difference is just astronomical.

as with most of your advices, terrible. 840pro is way faster than 830. Drowning_witch made a good choice, congrats, and Stige just sounds bitter he bought 830 and 1 month later 840 pro was out. |
I have had this for propably a year or so now.
840 Pro has 20MB/s higher read and and was it 40MB/s higher write? And way higher price than a 830 does, though can't seem to find 830s for sale anymore so can't really compare now but a 840 Pro is a good 30€ higher currently than what I paid for my 830 back then.
So not really no, I don't regret having a 830 the slightest, I'm actually glad I bought it when I did or I might have fallen to that same marketing trick that many others have without proper reading considering how "shit" the 840 Basic is and how overpriced the 840 Pro is compared to a 830.
Can you really say you would notice any difference at all with extra 20-40MB/s on read/write? I doubt it, and it's definitely not worth an extra 30€.
The EVO on the other hand seems to be damn good value for money, costing like 25-30€ less than the 840 Pro does lol and being FASTER at the same time.
Makes me wonder why anyone would even look at buying a 840 of any other sort than EVO.
