IMPORTANT NOTICE:
The demo _DOES_ run under Windows 2000. I just installed it on my WinXP laptop and copied the folder "...\Age Of Empires III Trial" over to my Windows 2000 workstation. Executed age3.exe and BINGO! It came up without a problem. |
Did the same with my windows xp partition, so it is supported
Sorry microSHIT!

Workaround for Win2000?
Try this:
| Quote: |
I just discovered this on a german Newspage (not tested, still downloading the demo), can anybody confirm that it works?
(trying to translate it to english)
1. Start aoe3trail.exe
2. It creates a new Folder at
"C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\<aktueller Benutzer>\Lokale Einstellungen\temp"
(Don't know what this is with an english Win2k...Maybe C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Local Settings\temp)
3. Wait for the error message
4. Copy the "Age of Empires III Trail.msi" from the mentioned Temp folder to C:\
5. Rename the file to ao3.msi
6. Go to the command console (START>RUN>cmd) and type:
| Quote: |
msiexec /a C:\ao3.msi /qn TARGETDIR="C:\blah"
|
Wait a few moments.
7. Start C:\blah\Age of Empires III\age3.exe
|

Waaaaaaaaaah.
Any case, I haven't tried the demo, and don't really plan to. I've played through the AoE series from inception, and I'm just kinda tired of the same old stuff. Big deal if it has fancy graphics or Havoc physics. If it just has the same repetative RTS feel all other AoE games had, what's the point? The glam will wear off and you're left playing just another RTS.
Tell me though, since you seem to love it. Be as objective as you can. How much strategy does this game involve? If you "Castle" in under 18 minutes, are you guaranteed to win? Is it best to pump out FU canoneers en masse and spam your opponent or should you mix it up, setup formations with your muskets on the front lines, and your canons in the back, while cavalry run amok on the flanks? Can you even DO that in this game? (text mediums can't convey they amount of dripping sarcasm and tongue-in-cheek inflections so I just thought I'd point that out here)
As far as the stick up my ass, lol. So sorry for having a negative opinion about a genre that's getting as common and bland as the FPS genre is. I'll try to be more happy and devout for the next "great game"

The other AOE games bored me, no strategy involved at all. At least 2160 makes you adapt to your opponent.
I'm really waiting for B&W 2 though.

I suppose I wasn't being completely objective.
If you enjoyed the other AoE's I think you would enjoy this. I personally loved the first two and hated mythology. If you are bored of it simply because it's a RTS then innovative RTS's and non-RTS games should be more interesting to you, this is a typical RTS, however it is a well refined example of an RTS at least to me. I don't think there is too much strategy involved, if you click drag a bunch of military units they actually form up with canons in the back etc etc... I believe the game is played more for the entertainment than for the strategy, if you derive pleasure from strategy focused games then things like shogun and rome would be your style game correct? Different games for different people (I don't have much interest in those games but don't criticize them because they bore me).
I agree. Some fresh new ideas would be great, but this game is quite enjoyable to me, so I'll take it for what it is and wait till someone does something new.

| Weedo wrote: | Wow I can't believe how much this demo disappointed me! It's extremely buggy and unpolished. When I started it the first time it crashed with a fatal error. I thought maybe this happened because my desktop resolution was at 800x600 so I changed it to 1024x768 and the game started. Later I tried it again with 800x600 desktop resolution and this time it worked. That's weird but nothing serious. But as soon as I start the campaign and this in-game cutscene plays the real problems appear. I have really strange sound glitches and crashes to desktop during the cutscene. When I skip the cutscene by hitting space I can get in the game but either I don't have any sound at all or I have glitchy sound. And even in-game it crashed to the desktop one time. So it's not properly playable here. And the graphics oh man wtf happened? It doesn't look amazing like on the screenshots. The graphics are nothing special even with all details at max. Imo this demo is horrible - it's unpolished, it doesn't look very good and it doesn't even work properly on my computer because it's buggy as hell. AOE3 was my most awaited PC game this year but now I don't know what to think of it. I really hope they will fix all the bugs and polish and improve it a lot before they will release it because so far this demo was my personal disappointment of the year. It's sad. |

the only thing that actualy annoy me is when you get that horse with the cannon it moves slow and if you add it to other units that are fast they will ALL go slow kidna annoying when the whole group moves so damn slow it takes like 2 secs for them to make a step when you use alt mode for the horse it moves fast so the group of units moves fast aswell is it only me or...?

weedo 95% chance it's your computer/software setup that's causing the problem
if not it's a bug that will be fixed if enough people complain.
cyp: set them to fast not battle mode...

No IT IS the game! It has bugs and the one I experienced is just one of many. What's so hard to understand about that? Why do some people always say the user or the computer is the problem? That's ridiculous and pretty noobish. "No it's not the game it works fine for me so it must be your computer!" Heh I won't discuss this any further. And as long as a computer exceeds the min specs the game has to work. That's a very weak excuse for bugs.
And if you were talking about my statement about the graphics - I wrote that I played with all details at max.
