Is there any kind of DRM or anything that's happening where you're prevented from playing a game, a single-player game even maybe, if you're offline?
So one of the advantages in the Xbox One generation, the reason we're looking at installing and understanding which games are yours and you own, is the ability for your games to roam with you. And you can go to a box and the box knows which games you have and you can take those games with you and move around. I think that's a real strong component of the platform and it obviously requires some local version of the game because you don't have to carry your disc around with you, as you're kind of bringing your content with you. So I think it's going to unlock a lot of capability for the gamer, much like they walk around with their gamerscore and their Live ID.
Holy shit... could that guy have NOT answered the question any more blatantly?
"Is there any DRM that would prevent me from playing a game offline?"
"It's going to unlock lots of capability for the gamer and their gamerscore and live ID! yuk yuk yuk"
~edit~
After Geoff Keighley's comments yesterday, people are up in arms about it and are bombarding Sony with pleas to not implement this kind of thing.
Now, unless Sony really are being skullfucked by publishers, I'm more inclined to believe this won't happen -- or rather, at least not like what MS has stated. It would be a huge win to Sony if they could remain the one last "open" console, which doesn't constantly penalise its users.

Console devs, game devs and anyone who is involved in this are becoming the same as politicians. His "an$wer" is really a sign of how much they care about customers and gamers especially.
I'm afraid Sony will do the same after the constant pressure of EA and other companies.

I'm inclined to agree Sony specifically denied requiring a net account or blocking used games in any way, prior to Yankbox One reveal... but.... yeah... if publishers are putting pressure, then I'm actually starting to get worried they might buckle too. I really hope they don't... but...

Yeah. I'm hoping Sony won't give in, but I'm not holding my breath, to be honest.
It's also funny as hell to see all those "reselling hurts developers" arguments as an explanation to what's being done here.
People have been reselling content for decades, hell - centuries even. From books, through vinyl disks, cassete and VHS tapes, music cd's, to movie dvd's and br disks nowadays. The rules are simple - you buy something, you own it, you can resell it, if that's your wish - and I see absolutely NO reason whatsoever why those rules should be changed now for poor and - oh so - underpaid game developers and publishers.
Second-hand goods are and always were a part of open market. It's called competition and you simply have to deal with it - by ensuring you offer more, selling at reasonable price and giving your customer base enough reasons to keep what they originally bought and be loyal to you.
Companies have been doing this for ages.
But of course, it takes dedication and hard work and you can't really manage that when, at the same time, you're milking consumers for cash with microtransactions and overpriced DLC cut from the original product. And you also can't do this without taking a hard, second look at bloated production costs, which - for some reason - never seems to be top priority. Not as much as fighting second-hand market and piracy, at the very least.

some kind of online checking and anti used games systems will happen on both consoles, you think why EA resigned from using passes.
i dont really care tho i was thinking about buying ps4 for exclusives. guess instead i`ll wait and buy a gfx card that can hold u4 engine really well as 90% of games will be made in that engine on "next" generation, just like u3 in this one. Looking at footage so far there wont be any big jump gfx wise, and with production/marketing costs rising more games will come to all platforms including PC sooner or later.
Buying hi-end card will be cost me 60%-70% of nextgen console prize and iso-demo will be free.ninety.nine as always

I don't know what it's like up there on Magical Expensive Fairy Cloud, where God herself throws crisp £100 notes in your face every second of every day, but the rest of us on Earth sometimes have to deal with what's called "money issues" --- I've already explained in the past that money issues forced me into selling my entire collection of boxed PC games, over £1500 worth of games - and quite likely more if you go by purchase-price. I was broke as fuck and, well, sorry... but I needed to eat. Now I tend to stick to Steam so that I can't be pushed into that kind of situation again, I've got £3k+ worth of games and I know I'll have them forever, no matter how bleak things get, at least I won't lose these like the last time.
---- sorry, correction; £4k+
So yes, I've both bought *and* sold preowned games. I used to visit market stalls every weekend, trade back the games I bought the previous week, get new ones. This is how gamers used to be -- I don't remember a time where you couldn't swap or borrow games from friends or at stores. It was only the rise of Gamestop/EBGames where they put paid to that, offering insultingly low trade prices which often meant trading in 3-5 games to get one, rather than the old days where you could trade a single SNES title and, maybe, a couple of quid, to get a new one. New as in "something new to you" not "brand new shrinkwrapped" -- because that's what people did. They traded.
I sincerely don't know mate, I never did it and I don't know anyone who did. And I'm far, far away from rich. I just made alot of compromises even if that meant that I have to live basement-dweller style for a couple of months. It's even worse nowadays to be frank, so that gaming is my one and only hobby. I just can't afford anything else and even with that it gets dangerously close here and then.
sabin1981 wrote:
Does that include me too? You're right, of course, I should get another hobby - since this one has become prohibitively expensive. If piracy goes away, it won't force me into buying games - new or preowned - because I simply don't have any form of income now. I'll just stop playing "new" games and stick to classic, which is mostly what I do now anyhow >_>

Once again, this is what gaming was ALWAYS about. Ever since home games existed, people traded and swapped and borrowed them. This isn't something new to the Yankbox or PS4, it's not a new subset of people getting pissed off because they're "entitled, lolz", it's the SAME people that have played games for YEARS and have gotten USED to borrowing games or lending them. £45+ is too much to expect someone to just blindly throw out. Yes, this also includes computer games --- I fondly remember loaning out, and borrowing in return, dozens of Amiga games, or Spectrum, or DOS.

It's a shame you've got this kind of extreme look on things, m3th0d mate, it really is. Oh well -- at least you'll be happy now that the preowned market is about to fail almost completely. Latest info is that there's a £35 "activation" on preowned games --- awesome, good luck on that Microsoft. I can go online now and buy, for argument's sake, "Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 2" on the PS2 and it will cost me £5-10, does that mean I'm morally wrong - or the seller is morally wrong? If so, then fuck that! I'm happy to be wrong
sabin1981 wrote:
.... and yet here you are, on a pirate gaming/movie site, downloading new games and new music and new movies --- constantly --- without paying for them. How's your conscience and moral compass now? :\
What I said wasn't based on that it's immoral or anything else. I thought I made that clear. Hell, copy, pirate do whatever you want. I'm doing it myself. Who am I to tell you otherwise? All I can say is that you got me totally wrong there which is propably due to my bad englisch skills once again... (internet is serious business )
It's the bitching about something we had to endure for years now that makes me upset.
And when we got/get upset about something, we get called elitists, entitled jerks, bitching asswipes and so on.
Yet here comes something around what I would call a smaller problem that seems inevitable since we lost that fight too back then. It's insane to think that Microsoft gives a shit after their targeted audience showed them, for years now, that they'll eat what they get served. No matter how much the turd stinks. It's just too late now. There was no collective drama-queen mode about the bad games and all the other crap when the time was right... now they got something to play with and obviously will do so. People brought this on themselves.
It's just fucking humanity once again. Only moving their asses when they're on the last step before it goes over the edge. And this is just sad and upsetting
And the bets are on that the people who are bitching around the world are still in the minority and that thing will sell millions.
Let's call it a "Schadenfreude" Sabin. The bad thing is that it hits also people who don't deserve it...
what concerns me in moves like that is the fact that, if i want to pick my SNES today and play street fighter 2, i can do it without any issues. If i want to pick up my PS1, i can go thru the whole library. Same with every system till today. What happens when microsoft goes "alright, now we're launching xbox three/four/eleven, we're shutting down xbox one servers", in which you lose access to the whole library you had.
You can argue microsoft will never shut down their servers, but i sure as hell don't like the uncertainty.
So, sorry for my ignorance - I've been living under a rock, but the new Xbox is basically gonna be a PC running Windows Media Center with Kinect? Will it run games at all?
Kinda makes sense now that they got rid of Windows Media Center in Windows 8 by default because they are now offering it embedded on their own device.
