made by the people who made hunters:episode one and two. hadnt heard of it before tonight when i saw/googled/grabbed it. so far only tried the tutorial. it feels like a reskinned hunters game imo. not a bad thing, but not really a good sign in terms of depth. im not really familiar with wh:quest board game, so im not sure how it holds up to the real thing in terms of rules/gameplay. i was kind of hoping for something closer to wf:fantasy or 40k in terms of rules and depth. so far this doesnt look like it, but i could be wrong, having only formed that opinion in a few minutes (sadly usually enough for mobile games, but i hope im wrong).

edit - jsut some updated impressions after playing a few full dungeons. the actual combat is pretty much hunters in terms of what your fingers do, only its a bit smoother and faster (you can move a second character while your previous one is still moving). the combat feels more like a puzzle where you try to figure out the most efficient way to do things. all the character classes handle differently, so there is a bit of depth in trying to figure out the most efficient/least risky plan...for example, fighters often get free attacks, so if you plant them in between as many guys as possible, they might kill them all in a series of lucky rolls. ranged characters can melee and then shoot. a good/risky tactic is to move them into melee after the fighters to clean up, then they can still shoot at whoever is further away. you get more attacks/potential kills, but if you roll bad, your weakest guys are up front.

the way they tie the story together is far more interesting than hunters as well. its not much, but a bit of narrative does a lot imo. i am not a fan of rating things 'x out of y' to relate how good i think they are, so ill rate it 'glad i tried it. staying on my phone for a while'...

That's the problem mate, you were expecting something Warhammer Quest (just like Hero Quest, Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, Space Crusade and Space Hulk) simply isn't. The boardgames aren't like the actual sprawling table-top games - neither the rules nor the gameplay are anything alike. The reason why this looks/feels like a skinned Hunters is because Hunters was actually very similar to HeroQuest to begin with - it had a very strong HeroQuest vibe, or rather it was more like Space Crusade.

If you want to know more, check these out;

I snagged the iOS version yesterday but haven't had time to try it yet, though all the reviews so far are painting it in a very good light - lots praising the familiarity of the boardgames whilst changing things just enough to fit computer gaming.

yeah i just always thought this was more like a fantasy version of necromunda when i saw the box set. i was sinking all my money into 40k at the time so i didnt pay much attention to fantasy. after another test i am definitely enjoying it for what it is, now that i am clear on what exactly that is Razz

Necromunda was freakin' AWESOME! But no, WQuest/HQuest/Space/AD&D were all following much simplified rules and gameplay than 40k/Epic and even Necromunda, which was pretty much the same as 40k only with much smaller arenas and scope. Another appeal to the boardgame versions, such as Space Crusade and Hero Quest, was that once you bought the box -- which wasn't cheap but it was a lot less than a full 40k army -- you had everything you needed to play, forever. It appealed to those with far less disposable income, since you didn't have to constantly buy expensive miniatures. I haven't played in over 15 years but I still remember the prices of lead miniatures in GamesWorkshop .... wow... Very Happy

yeah necromunda was pretty much a quick starter kit for 2e. it came with just enough minis, and just enough terrain, and dice, and the 'codexies' had just enough info in them to play a quick game...and get you thinking it would be cool to have a bigger battle, with some power armour, and a tank, and some cool terrain...and then you are broke, starving and nearly homeless like some kind of junkie with nothing but miniatures to show for yourself Razz

Yep, you're a 40k player all right Very Happy My old teacher in boarding school was a HUGE 40k fan, including Epic and Necromunda, and the money he spent on his miniatures - not to mention painting them - was just.... holy shit.

yeah i dont even want to get into it lol. lets just say that warhammer had a worse influence on me in my youth than drugs, gangsta rap, satanic black metal, red heads, cigarettes and alcohol. combined...and leave it at that.

edit - well as much as i was enjoying this i am stuck now. when i try to go do the mission from the second settlement the game closes every single time. great.

*prays to khorne for a patch*

edit 2 - closed it from the task manager thing, rebooted phone, that mission still crashed, but it re-rolled some random ones which worked...after which the main mission worked again. beat the next one and get a choice to betray the guy who hired me. i say no and go back to him for my reward and he gives me the dialogue for betraying him, no reward and a punishment quest.

Came across a couple of bugs too where the screen would sometimes freeze up just before an enemy encounter. Fortunately the game seems to auto save frequently so it was just a case of closing the game and restarting and you would continue from where you had left off losing only a few minutes of playtime.

my biggest gripe is that there are still in-app purchases to be made for things such as extra characters, in game gold and mission dlcs even after you pay for the game. Maybe it's just me but I really hate that. Even though it's pretty cheap I want to have the 'full' game without having to spend extra money once i've bought the game.

Feel they could have just released this for free otherwise and only have you pay for in app purchases like most other mobile games.

yeah i ran into the crash when its rolling an encounter a few times now too. i also agree about the way they handle the IAP. the fact they charge for extra campaign is ok imo, but the characters should be in or out completely. as it is right now, i am getting 'wasted' loot drops of pretty cool items for the pay characters instead of stuff i can use for my own party , and random quests on the map screen for their equipment. seems kind of shitty to do it like that if they arent available to the player.

What makes it worse is that the game isn't free, you have to buy the base game and then suffer through situations like you describe since the "extra" characters - which aren't extra at all - are locked behind a pay-gate. Yet they wonder why piracy is so high? Laughing IAPfree, my lovelies.
