GameSpy: Mod Fits The Original Deus Ex With A New Vision

Quote:
The mod -- unsurprisingly called A New Vision -- acts as a kind of high-tech wallpaper, veneering the environments with crisp, updated-for-the-modern-man textures. It's been in the making for five years, and now its creator is finally calling it "done."

Since my mere mention of Deus Ex probably just instigated a reinstall on your system, you might as well try out A New Vision too, which you'll find over at ModDB. Take note that this doesn't apply to character models, just the environment textures -- JC Denton will still be his blocky, rigidly trenchcoated self.

There's a very interesting article on eurogamer about the original Deus Ex design. I'd say they changed a lot of things for good.

A lot of details in Deus Ex changed, but the game always looked awful.

well, come on, even back then it looked ugly
the animations were ridiculous with characters riverdancing with machine guns
it never hurt the game because the rest of it was good enough

Again:

Confused

It was/is not the best looking game, but ugly/awful it was not.

Yeah I agree, it wasn't exceptional but more than decent for those times, with its typical UE look.
The atmosphere made up for the lack of graphical goodies too. Very Happy

It isn't my fault frankly Laughing

They have a point: DX is ugly at times. The bots in UT look much better than people in DX, which was made on the same engine. It reminds me of Anachronox, which is even more ugly, but makes you forget about the visual shortcomings with the help of great storyline and gameplay.

If you haven't played Project 2027, do yourselves a favor and play it right now, because it's really awesome. Not ony they nailed the Deus Ex core gameplay perfectly, but they also added some very interesting new gameplay elements (such as a perk system) and made everything much more difficult (for instance, you can't hack cameras until you gain the third level of the Electronic skill). Also, the level are far more open and you even get to choose between mutually exclusive quests, since you have to deal with rival factions in some of the missions.

Highly recommended.

Deus Ex Nihilum just got released. Smile

Also, a demo for Terminus Machina (whose feature list is very interesting) is slated for release in early June.

Terminus Machina's beta is out. The feature list sounds interesting, to say the least.

Does anyone know of a mod that greatly changes the original game?

Not ridiculously... JC doesn't need octopus arms or anything... just by maybe adding some new stuff, changing the locations of items, guards, codes etc

I'm sort of sick of knowing how the entire game is inside and out, but I still want to play

I'd say the Shifter mod is a good candidate: http://www.moddb.com/mods/shifter1

It adds some new contents and refines the gameplay and AI a lot. I had great fun with it. Smile

Deus Ex : Revision is coming out in May. It will be bundled together with other mods.

Revision (better, more detailed enviroments and soundtrack) +New Vision (awesome textures everywhere) +HDTP release 2 (the highest poly models Unreal engine can handle) + Shifter equals more Deuse Ex goodnes and yet another playthrough.

It's optional Smile Honestly though, the two samples given are pretty incredible. They stay true to the source, but add just enough to be original.

(no, it's not a dubstep remix Laughing )

Yup. Compared with the original NYC Streets it sounds even a bit better in my opinion. The Hong Kong one not so much, but it's still good.

I hope I'll have the same feel playing Revision as I am right now replaying FF8 with Roses & Wine; the new soundtrack changes are incredible, enough of the original to still evoke my love of the OST but with fantastic new arrangements (both from the remix community and official artists like The Black Mages) rounding out the score. It looks like Revision is going to be a blast, they're even including all the recommended mods in a unified installer; New Vision, Revision, unifiedDX, HDTP and Shifter.
