This Thursday, $20

Quote:
the game is coming this Thursday the 20th (So, Wednesday at 11:00 PM, most likely.) for $19.99. It'll run on the iPad 2, 3, 4, and mini, as well as the iPhone 4S, 5, and 5th generation iPod touches.

I've bought it before but I'm definitely buying it again, this would suit a touch interface so well

$20 is going to ruffle SO many feathers in the iOS world. There's going to be an epic shitstorm over this, regardless of the fact that - toned down visuals and a couple less maps - you're getting a full PCPS360 XCOM experience.

Don't see why there should be an outrage, because a lot of iOS games and apps are ridiculously overpriced. $20 for this game is pretty fantastic.

That's to us and yes, I absolutely agree, but trust me; there will be a shitstorm over this. People hit the roof whenever SE puts out one of their games at the $12-18 price point. iOS gamers expect $0.99-$6 for their games and go nuts when they're over that.

Well that's the thing with iOS (or Android for that matter). I'm going to get hated for this, but the average user is shallow as fuck. Infinity Blade 1 and 2 are heralded as so damn amazing, but in reality they're utter shite. Yes, they're pretty, but that's where it ends. And that crap still costs 6 EUR / 7 USD Neutral

So taking that as my baseline, Kotor and this easily deserve a $20 tag. $20 might be a little high compared to other big titles, but compared to the average game it's certainly worth it.

Once again, you're looking at this from a PC gamer angle. $20 is immense value to US. To the average iOS gamer that is use to, and continues to expect, paying $2-5 --- it's a lot. Like I said, everyone kicks up a whinestorn whenever Square-Enix puts out a title, since they have high prices despite offering immense value also.

Well I don't get why Cut The Blade...err Infinity Rope doesn't get a shit storm with its 6 EUR/7 USD then. Because of the visuals?

*shrug*

I dunno, I'm the wrong audience for games like that anyway, or stupid shit like Shadowgun. I think they are hugely overpriced, as they either do not play well or are just plain boring.

So surprising.. so warming. Only a small handful of people complained about the price, mentioning that it's a year old port with less content and that they can buy the console versions for the same price. Still, overwhelmingly positive reception. There's more bitching about it on the forum, but surprisingly little compared to normal. Colour me impressed!

Good Very Happy

Hope it does well, wouldn't mind more of this on either tablet or desktop. One of the few genres I think works well on a tablet; in fact, this may work even better on a tablet Very Happy

XCOM is definitely the kind of game that would be ideal on a tablet, I'm actually rather curious how it looks/plays myself. Apparently the install size is just over 2GB (4GB over air/wifi, just like KoTOR) though the person that posted that didn't provide a source, so.. take it with a pinch of salt.

That's a significant visual downgrade, there's no getting around that - in comparison the iOS version is fuck ugly. No dynamic lighting of any kind really removes a great deal of atmosphere. Still, that said, I am still impressed they managed to get XCOM onto an iPad in the first place. Gameplay-wise it will still be really enjoyable ---- IF you can suffer through the horrible-looking framerate. However, that is on the iPad 3 with its Retina res, it should be a lot better on iPad 2 with non-Retina.

That is indeed a pretty big difference.

On the bright side, that's how porting should be done, scaling down instead of...not scaling at all Rage

I haven't seen any screengrabs of the iPhone 5 version yet. I'm willing to bet the iphone 5 can run with a lot of those enhanced effects enabled due to it's power and smaller screen res then the iPad.

Yeah I'm wondering what the A6 in the iPhone 5 or A6X in the iPad 4 can do. The A6X is powerful enough compared to the regular A6 to drive that resolution, so iPhone 5 vs iPad 4 should be very little difference.

Well actually this IS one of games that specifically states improvement/recommendation for iPad 4+

Quote:

***NOTE: XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a graphically rich game with advanced features that is best experienced on the iPad 4 and up. To OPTIMIZE your playing experience, you may also want to turn off other apps before playing.***

So I reckon playing it on the iPad 4 (and vice versa, iPhone 5) should be the best experience, both in terms of visuals and performance.

I haven't bought the game (sorry guys) as I'm broke as fuck if I DID have any money, there's better things to spend $20 on, but I can always grab the IPAdemo (Very Happy) and test it later for you. I'm trying to get my wifey to play this anyhow Smile However, the video comparison showing off the iPad 3 didn't look all that different to your shots - so perhaps the "iPad 4 or higher is recommended" is solely for performance? The iPad 3 version chugs along very poorly, judging by the video.

Jesus.. Neutral I guess even the iPad 4 doesn't have enough grunt for even half-uglified XCOM. Strange though, given the Vita-power of iPad 4.
