This gen was a long one, and it's still going, so it's not over yet. But because its long one and there were a lot of games (ton of sequels) my prefs changed and shifted so it's hard to stick with a 3 list game for each category. Anyway, here it is:

ME2 does not belong in anyone's "best RPG" list. Demon's Souls and Dark Souls are both better than that piece of shit. ME1, but not 2 nor 3.
The two Souls games, ME1, The Witcher 2, Dragon Age: Origins, "Fallout" 3 and NV, TES 4+5, Kingdoms of Amalur. They are all better than bloody ME2 
There's a top 10 RPG list for you right there - and I can't even count Fable 2 in for example since I don't have a 360. Nor did I count Alpha Protocol in, because even though the RPG part of it is stronger than ME2's, I still don't really consider it an RPG.
And regardless of genre, the following belong *somewhere* in the list:
- The Walking Dead
- Red Dead Redemption
- The Last of Us
- Dead Space
- Batman: AA and AC
- GTA 4
- Castlevania
- Sleeping Dogs
- Heavy Rain
- Uncharted 2 or 3 (I found 2 to have marginally better gameplay, but 3 has the presentation)
- God of War 3
- Valkyria Chronicles
- Mortal Kombat
- Shift 1+2
- Alpha Protocol
And probably some more I've forgotten now. FPS you won't see me mention, the genre simply does not belong on a console IMO. All of the above I rate much higher than any bloody FPS; and with some of the above I still think they would've worked better with KB+M (RDR in particular). ME2 is not even a top25 game, so much better shit out there

The only part where ME2 is better is the story. Everything else is better in ME1. ME2's gameplay is so unbelievably bad, RPG elements are virtually nonexistent and I could go on about what's wrong with it for hours. It's to ME1 what DA2 is to DA:O, an absolute disgrace. The whole ME series could've been the best RPG series of the last 10 years had they taken ME1 and improved it instead of ripping out everything that was good (or good enough, with potential to be amazing).

AP is unpolished, but it is a great game. Better than fucking ME2 at least 
Note, ME2 is just one of many "sequels" that I utterly despise for fucking up what could've been great. DA2 like I said, but also Bioshock 2 for example or even GT5. They all either completely disregarded their predecessor or just didn't do shit with what they had (GT5 says hi). Those games do not deserve to be mentioned in any kind of "top" list. I'm quite unforgiving that way; and I don't even rate Bioshock 1 as highly as most people, I think it was good and had potential, but it was not the gem it could've been. |

hehe, all those games listed brings back the memories, i played so many games its hard to make a best of.
My unordered Top Six:
MGS4
BIOSHOCK (1,2 and Infinite)
Uncharted (i liked 2 the most)
Last of Us
Red Dead Redemption
GTA 4 + Addons
i probably missed so many cool games, but these sprang to mind.
And i concur with Alpha Protocol. I did have a lot of fun with it. I think it was too ambitious, they focused too much on the "choice" while other stuff fell short. I wish they would make a another.

This is a personal top of favorite games from this gen. If you can't comprehend that and accept that people may have different tastes/preferences than you, why are you on a public forum? Should I staple a IMO sticker at the start of every post?

Fine if you like the game, I can respect that. But don't call it an RPG, because it's a story-driven TPS with (very) minor RPG elements (doesn't even have an inventory ). Not the other way around. That's something most reviews even pointed out and something most gamers said on forums. Fuck, even IGNorant put the game at 57 in their top 100 RPGs; with ME1 at #9 (FO3 at 10 and TES 5 is in the top 10 there as well).

The fact that some people rate ME2 as a better R P G than ME1 is exactly what is wrong with this fucking generation. That's why we've seen so few proper RPGs. That's why there's hardly any RTS worth mentioning anymore. It just does not appeal to the action-loving crowd they need to target to make up for the retarded marketing budgets these days (because no, game development still isn't that expensive, the marketing is). Or in the case of RTS, doesn't work on consoles. |

It's a game I said like, I never said it was the best RPG or better than other RPGs. The fact that there's no nr attached to those games in the list should state that there's no order of prefs. I assumed that was obvious.
The only reason ME is first one that list because it's the oldest current gen game suited for that category I could think of at that moment.
I chose ME because I think of it as a series not as individual games. I specified "1 and 2" because wanted to make it clear that I did not like 3, and would not want to include that.
As for the pure blood RPG debate, <IMO> ME2 is as much an RPG as Diablo is for others. Even more so since, through the story (especially the loyalty ones), you are playing are role.
I don't recall inventory and loot drops making an RPG. The fact that you dislike it because it lacks those elements, well that's your evaluation system and you can base your preferences on that but don't expect me to do the same.

I didn't forget, just never finished it.  Even though I played a ton of it, mostly roaming around and exploring. 
There is a game I forgot about and that's Risen 1, but the console version so awful that I played and finished that on PC.

So we might as well extend that definition to, say, Duke Nukem Forever! You're playing a "role" after all, you're "playing" the "role" of Duke Nukem, so that makes DNF an RPG too  |
You know what I mean. And no, it's not the same, there's a certain choice factor that's attached to that role you play that affects that world/story in meaningful ways.
But lets assume you right and go the other way, that skill points and inventory/loot makes and RPG. Then action games like Dark Messiah, Borderlands and Dead Island are RPGs. Hell even the last Wolfenstein and Rage are as well.
