Actually, this is not true. Some 10 years ago, there was the Radeon 9800 Pro which was known to overheat very badly and the drivers were partly to blame.

Then a few years ago, I had a HD 4870 and a fault in the drivers, caused the fans to turn too slowly causing the card to overheat. They didn't fix it soon enough so someone had to release a patch that would basically let you set the speed yourself through a second program.

So yeah, not touching ATI with a ten foot pole. Most of the time, at least several of the features I used in their software was broken and every new update, caused something new to break. For almost a year, the 1:1 pixel mode was broken (that's the mode where a game's resolution is displayed natively on your screen and not stretched meaning you get black borders but very sharp image).
The 9800 pro had one single shitty driver which would somehow not properly control the fans, which they pulled off very fast, I had the 9800SE with unlocked shaders (flashed) and everything ran great (except for AA, which produced in some games artifacts). Felt great man, only payed 180 or so for the SE while the 9800 pro was more than twice as expensive Aww Yeah

Or how about the 9500 nonPro flashed to 9700 Pro? That was a good feeling indeed Very Happy The 9800's biggest failing was that horrible tin heatsink, it was just... cheap and nasty and had about as much cooling potential as blowing a raspberry onto the chip Laughing

Indeed, I had an aftermarket cooler installed on my 9800 Pro, something like this:

Worked great and it's still working.

One of my friends gifted this to me against my wishes, said I had to play it cause it was "EPIIIIIIC!". I knew nothing of the game, and a few quick looks turned me off right away. I'm all for nostalgia and everything, but this game just looked fucking ridiculous. Either way, have it downloaded and maybe I'll get around to it some day :/

And the first episode is done, though I have to do it all over so I can find the secret level for this part of the game. Razz
(Oh and nice poster there of the lead developer, he's also the face of the team leader in the game but all in-game characters are based on real persons apparently.)

it was one of the legendary DOS Shooters. Right there with Wolfenstein, Quake, Doom, Redneck Rampage, Duke etc.

I remember playing ROTT and Hexen: Beyond Heretic back in the day. The nostalgia is strong in this remake, the sound effects especially.

The multiplayer really disappointed me especially due to the scarcity of the weapons and the weapon you do find is rocket launchers which is a clusterfuck to use in the corridors which apparently occupies half of the mapdesign. At least those maps I've played, hopefully some community maps will be alot different.

I never really like original ROTT. It was a clusterfuck of level design that I just couldn't enjoy. My memories of it right now are more of being on drugs and running without any purpose.

But this remake is pure fun if only the developer would take care of performance issues. In one place of the first map of the second episode I have drops to 4-5 fps.

Well the level design should accommodate the arsenal. Tho I don't know I never played the original in multiplayer, so what do I know?

Looks exactly like my old graphic card Very Happy

I'm embarrassed to say I never finished this game, I always got lost and could never find the way. My excuse if any, I was very young Razz

I liked it a lot though, I'm hoping this remake is better than the arkania mess.

I had back in the times 9800 SE which could be flashed to fully unlocked 9800 pro! Also the best bang for buck (which really was bargain) back in the times was when i bought Geforce 6800 LE which unlocked to full 6800 GT and overclocked to Ultra clocks (was insanely fast card and for the quarter of 6800 Ultra price) Very Happy. These days card are hardware locked tho ;<

I hate to admit it, but my reflexes and hand-eye coordination arent as sharp as they used to be when I played the original. I'm not doing very well at all hehe. It's fun, but damn, it's "fast".

Try using the jump pads and keep jumping, you'll get the hang of it and gain more speed.

Yeah, I know that feel. But after playing for a couple of hours straight it starts getting back a bit, you just need a little more practise I think. But I agree, it's pretty fast and I love the nearly-instant-respawn.

Now devs, give me map change!

What are the examples of performance issues that are most commonly noticed?

I only have a 1gig 570 and it runs GREAT, no hiccups, solid 45-60 FPS.....

There is a plethora of settings in the launcher......maybe turn some of them down? Dynamic shadows for example.....

Where are the video options? Manual edits? I'm trying to play on a laptop and I can't even see if AA is on, which is probably what's killing performance. All I can see is resolution..

Finally tried the game and I must say, I'm enjoying it a lot..just as expected. Razz

It lacks polish and has flaws, but it stays true to the original. It's very challenging if played on hard, and the fast speed, no health regen, plenty of bonuses + hidden areas/collectables and level design make it a proper old-school game.

The performance on the other hand is pretty darn terrible for me* (*for everyone) and I had to disable several options to make it fully playable, let's hope for some magical patching. Mouse controls and AI aren't particularly good either, as well as the decision to not include manual saving..quite unexplainable. Oh well, still great for some summer shooting. Smile
