Hi feggits,

today I saw this video here on YouTube:

It was about a very gay looking, -talking and -moving person talking about video games and the possibility of them becoming the next big religion.

I personally think it's a bunch of BS what he says, because no art-form or medium has ever become a religion, like music, literature, movies, ... there are no examples of such a thing happening in the history of the world, hence I reckon the chances for it to happen on video games are pretty damn low - at least I wouldn't bet my money on it.

ANYHOW this is NOT what I want to say with this thread nor want I continue this bullshit discussion about religion(s).

What I want you is to think about & discuss (here on the forum, not on that videos comments sections!) on the comments that I wrote to that video:

My comments to this video were:

Games will never become a religion, because they simply will not last long enough. Books were written on papyrus - that is the reason why they could be preserved. Books were stored in libraries - that is the reason why they were accessible to everyone. Books had no copyrights - that is the reason the medium spread so well. Today's mainstream games are copyrighted & proprietary, run on proprietary hardware, and recently also require proprietary online-services to work properly (multiplayer).

To me, this is even a bigger crysis than the problem with (old) hardware, because even if one could write a hardware-emulator like MAME, who will provide the online-services? Preserving current-gen video games for the future will become the biggest cultural challenge of the 21st century, considering popularity, cultural impact and plainly revenue of VG's outpasses Music & Movie industry together. Let's see what happens, maybe some genius idea will occur.

What do you think about it?

FIGHT!

A single book or the collection of books of a single author is not an art-form.

A single game or the full catalogue of a single development team can become a religion (they most likely won't, since people get bored of them, and they have no "do this or else" dogma attached to them), but gaming itself will not.

I think that basically you are right, but the time you took to write that up is wasted.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

I disagree. How the Xbox (>360) and Playstations (>3) shall be preserved for the future is yet an unsolved riddle. How future gen consoles/games shall be preserved must come close to a miracle (with all these account based online-only bullshit M$ is pulling off). Not only you have to write an Emulator, you also have to understand the services & security around the console.

And to be honest the PC fraction is not very different, since the majority of commercial games run on proprietary OS'es, with proprietary GFX cards, with proprietary GFX drivers, using proprietary GFX Frameworks (DirectX).

Do you think any DX11 game, created for something around a GTX670 + appropriate drivers + Win7, will run on a version of Windows in 2016? On a 2016 GFX card? Using the 2016 DirectX or OpenGL or whatever will be around by then?

Again, I disagree that thinking & writing about this is a waste of time...

Not sure if sirias.

I hope that's not the case. I really do. A lot of gamers today forget\ignore the past. If video games were to become a religion i'd give up gaming. Too many jerk offs would soil the reputation of my favourite hobby.

Uhm, this was obviously more like a panel to push the acceptance of gaming/gamers. Not one to establish it as a religion. At least that's what I got out of it. Not that alarming.

I didn't watch the video, maybe later but I'm still throwing in my 2 bits.

I think it could. Belief and practice can be in anything. Get someone addicted to gaming and it is everything to them. Like that episode in Luther where those 2 brothers played that D&D like game. Scoring points with peoples lives, and trading up weapons. The symbolic graffiti.

For Gamers like that, the video story line becomes like a bible. I think.
