You're comparing two turbo charged engines. And in this case, the 1.4 versus 1.8 will make zero difference.

As for hybrids: I still think that in electric mode (and thus any full electric car as well) they're lethal machines. The fact that they make 0 noise is highly unsettling.

Nah, the prius can drive quite some minutes at 30kmh pure on electric. Quite handy in traffic jams as there is no mechanics and gearing involved. So no 'shocking' and clutching all the time.

It doesn't even matter whether it's 10 or 20kmh. It's free energy as it saved in a battery using braking power or 'free rolling' energy which would be lost otherwise.

I belief they added 'fake noise' in the newer hybrids to overcome the deadly silence, or will do so in the future. In USA, some there recently was a lawsuit because they are too quiet Laughing ...

Hybrids still are the future buddies. Not from a total perspective on ecology; electricity needs to be generated somewhere and will continue to polute. But it can be used to make highly crowded places manageable. Rather than having peak concentrations of fine dust or fumes in city centers, polution is generated somewhere remote in a controlled fashion and probably much lower than inefficient engines generating it. Furthermore, recovery systems etc are taking total energy consumption down.

The prius has 100kg of batteries, to do that thing, and it's useless and dead weight when traveling outside city limits. :\

Even more with plug-in hybrids, that can go 80-100km on pure electricity.

And in both cases you need a garage, ot at least a parking spot with an outlet.

Another thing: usually the battery pack of the cars, is leased to you for 50eur a month.
For 50 eur a month, I do 700km on diesel.

I agree hybrids are the future, but they aren't worth the money at this moment.

Maybe incorporate super capacitors, and increase battery life and capacity by 10 fold, and it'd be fucking bye bye to internal combustion engines.

I ADORE the Tesla car - only electricity and makes 400km with ~6h? recharge. But costs $100k, of which $20k is only the battery. Which needs to be replaced every 3 years?

In the current state of manufacturing, the only good thing is latest generation start-stop systems, and not always.

A friend of mine has a 2009 Mazda 3 speed. It has a second battery exclusively for the said system. It breaks down after 1-3 months of usage. And Mazda refuses to fix it or replace the battery - it wasn't covered in the guarantee - it's a consumable. And that is on ALL Mazda 3's.

FUCK DA FUEL ECONOMY!

On highway I must get around 10l/100km or something (~23MPG?), in towns it's propably closer to 15l/100km (~15MPG?).

Not sure what my Ford does yet after last winters rebuild/tuning of the engine but I doubt it's any less than last summer with more power now heh.

Fuel is pricy as fuck here,
95E10 / 98E5 / Diesel
1.529 1.579 1.354

Those are just the cheapest prices in Finland, you can add like 8-10 cents to those prices where I live.

That's waaay too much. A small hatchback 1.6 does 6/100 outside and 8/100 inside city limits, and a small sedan does 8/100 outside and 10/100 inside city limits..?! (average on normal driving)

Reaction LOL Okay

You know nothing, Jon Snow.

1.70-1.85 for Euro95, add 10 cents for 98 and diesel's around 1.40.

What are these things you speak of????

I thought a car isn't a car unless it's atleast 5m long and 2m wide! And has no less than 8 cylinders.

lol at this thread. ppl on anti-diesel crusade bitching about petrol prices. Laughing

i don't know what kind of anti-diesel drivel you guys been reading but there are a buttload of tests done on this subject. they take two identical cars with petrol and diesel, engines as close to power as possible and drive 10,000km or so. and diesel always comes up on top of fuel economy, take into account diesel price and you get 30-40% lower fuel running costs.

warelds, i'm sorry about your fucked up taxes in your country against diesel cars, but contrary to your beliefs world doesn't revolve around you or the Netherlands Wink

in my country ppl mostly buy used cars, and prices for those are identical for petrol and diesel model. also we don't have dumb ass diesel car taxes or whatever. but before you go on screaming 3rd world, we have rigorous car tests that every car must pass at least every 2 years, and these tests are especially thorough for diesel cars.

also, another guy bitching about diesel in winter... "special" fuel. yeah it's called arctic diesel and you can get it everywhere during winter. hard to start diesel car in winter? yeah it's as hard as waiting a few secs for red glowplug light to go off. how about not having 20 year old car with primitive diesel engine. you know they made great advances in diesel engine tech over the last 1-2 decades.

Not strange tho Wink Remember reading that there are 4 countries with no tax on wine in europe. Don't remember exactly but thought it was Italy, France, Austria and Greece.

So my car drove ~760km with ~62€ worth of diesel (45.34L). This means the consumption is more like 6L/100KM and my display showed me between 6.0 and 5.9, but I had some fast driving phases in there. This time I'll try to drive as economic as possible, let's see how many kilometers are possible that way Smile

I drove at 60-80km/h to Belgrade on some scenic routes along the river (some 500km) - 3.9/100. So it's possible.

My fuel consumption according to the car's own stats is 6.2 l diesel / 100km.
And my car has almost double HP and almost double torque of yours. Smile

And I got so many more than yours and I don't give a rats ass about fuel economy! Laughing
