in an effort to stream line and make for a faster game play experience the series is definitely loosing something vital. I really like the slightly stretched out plodding pace of ME2 and the like. Shogun 2 acknowledged this to some extant after ETW.
Battle speed is ridiculously fast. Ranged units are far to powerful, while defensive play feels weakened by poor AI behavior. The capture flag without wall's is simply stupid especially considering the lack of any proper leadership over defending city maps. Just the general look of the interface is to icon heavy and lacks much charm or personality. Tempted to go back to Realism and Surrectum 2, untill all this shit is sorted out.
This game is totally broken and unplayable in this form as rome:
-Angry Joe has right:
- naval battle completly broken as you see in the video, funboys say you cant win naval battle with transport ships against battle ships. WRONG, the AI can. AI destroyed my all army of (15)transport ships and (7)battleships with ( battle ship. My soldiers was doing nothing just like in the Angry Joe video
- without naval battle how can you play rome, surrounding with all the mediterannien see?
-The Combat AI is broken too just like in the video he intercepts the charge and retreat 5-6 times. funboys say it is because the fear factor in the game. WRONG again. I managed to beat 4 spear units defending a city with only 1 javelin unit because of this. they should only take a walk to the center but no they charged and retreated like a retard.
- and finally the combat is way too fast! i got a 2100+ vs 1800 unit battle lasted 4 minutes. this is a joke. they just charged me like super fast i was able to shoot only 1 time and than my skirmishers runed back. My soldiers retreated after a minute. i cant manage my ships (there was 4 of them) i cant manage my powers it is simpli not fun. I am playing now on slowmo and this is just WRONG again.
I am a funboy too...
1. I conquered in every direction with rome without a single warship, sry but please don´t be such a dramaqueen and stop overacting, snickers?
2. battles are only too fast if YOU are not the one who controls them. You´ll lose every fight if you play "sitting duck". BUT I understand what you are trying to say so yes, the fights eventually could be a bit less speedy. 90% of the battles in rome 1 I just got bored to see my armies marchin like a turtle and hit the turbo button^^ this one was a design decision
3. the combat AI is not that broken. read a few posts in this thread and you will realise, that the AI is very weak (like in all TW games) but not broken. maybe the devs should polish the routines to make sure the AI acts reasonable. congratz on discovering one mad turn of the AI, maybe there are a lot more but these arent gamebreaking. don´t hop on every hate train that enters the station
4. angry joe is angry joe because he´s angry joe and his job is to entertain the masses. he´s like a cabaret artist. if he doesn´t find a reason to be angry he´ll find one for sure. I can´t help myself. For me he´s not a journalist but a very funny comedian. I would never rely on his statements about a game (maybe he´s right but I would try to back up his points first)
Don´t get me wrong here the game has MANY problems but it´s not broken at all. maybe I am not that pissed because I bought it for 24 € over at nuuvem and for this price I had some fine hours of gaming pleasure
1. winning all tha game wothout a single warship is'nt mean it is broken to you?
2.Battles are too fast for me yes, why is it given 1 hour in default if they last in 4 min? Is this starcraft or total war game?
3. Ai is broken just see it your self:
4. I completly understand the "Angry Joe show" but now he has the point!
If we are happy with such a release it is WRONG! I spend 55 euros for this shit in my country it is 1 week salary so i dont want "some fine hours of gaming plesure" i want to play it right now.
Yeah, the battles are just not good as of right now. The speed takes away any tactic or maneuverability of your troops. Basically it's just 1 big ball in the middle and the stronger side wins. And troops don't keep their formation and basically just mix together.
However i have to give them props for the campaign map. I got quickly used to the UI and stuff and it's a real joy now. It has depth and is way better then anything before. Imho anyway.
But this needs a lot of modding and tweaking, that's for sure.
1. winning all tha game wothout a single warship is'nt mean it is broken to you?
I should correct my statement, I had warships (alone for the bonus goals) but I didn´t use them, because I keep my sea transports as short as possible. If you want to sieg an harbour or hunt for every single warship yeah you should prolly have a fleet. That´s the meaning of a warfleet. If you don´t want them it´s possible to do it without them was all I wanted to say

Maybe they should slower them down in combination with the realistic battle option. Like I mentioned before. I kinda like the speeded up battles but it´s untypical for grand scale strategy game and I would be happy this or the other way.

FIRSTLY this "bug" (?) never occured in one of my games and I have around 16 hours on my R2 clock and yeah I get it you don´t like the AI and I can´t remember that the AI ever did a "smart" human turn in a TW battle but for me the AI is acting reasonable (in terms of a AI). That´s what I wanted to say. The experience you made with it (or should I better say Angry Joe`s?) are not representing the whole Rome 2 AI. Believe me I would go nuts if this would be the case?! And yes there are ways to spoil or abuse the AI in this game like in every other game (like this one discovered). And no I didn´t see the video till the end because I rely on my own experience and not what some youtubers say (in most cases).

Good

I will not call you a dumbass for spending a weeks salary for a game of a serie which is known for a very bad KI and flaws at release BUT you really should take your lesson out of this one. TBH there are two: The first is you shouldn´t rely on a TW title for it´s condition at release and the second one, you shouldn´t spend so much money for a game (regardless of how much it is you earn in a week). You can buy this game for under 30 € without any risk or loss of features. This is not meant in an offending way it´s just a thought
1. the AI could use a general overhaul (to be polite^^)
2. the lack of a infrastructional building tab for the whole province (streets and aqueducts should be built in this way)
3. ranged units are worthless because of the fast character of the battles
4. more facts and data about your population
5. bigger UI to improve and support the feeling of "managing a province". more options?
6. WHY FOR FUCK SAKES DID THEY REMOVE THE "USEFUL RESSOURCES" I loved this in shogun

I got the shock of my life when I right clicked on a unit for detail for the first time and it just loaded the front page of the encyclopedia. That mini box on the left just gets in the way and doesn't give enough detail. I want to find out about that thing, not search for it! Worked so much better in ME2 and even Shogun.

Same for me but believe me once you get used to it, it´s very helpful especially for deciding on which research chain you should concentrate next because it´s like a little wiki and everthing is connected. I like it
well. Gonna stop my roman campaign for now. On hard, it's just not challenging "at all". Nobody ever attacks me, declares war or anything. I roll over anyone with 2 armies and there is like no resistance what so ever. Ever.
Going to start a game on legendary with parthia That should prove more challenging hehe.

I don't think it will change anything. No one seems agressive. Rome is a fucking joke too even though they said that if you're not playing as Rome, it will be the biggest threat because it will start to create it's great empire. Rome is just sitting there in Italy, doing shit.
AI is just a joke in general (Not talking about the battle-AI, which is bad too though but that's nothing new. Didn't see the worldmap AI in such a bad state ever. Yet I can't talk about Empire/Napoleon. I skipped them because I dislike that pewpew crap).
think it has been mentioned many times now about removing the grafix log, and truing the all memory bool, and the game will look as intended. Won't run worth a poo, but it won't look bad anymore lol. Things are okish until there are many thousands on screen at once fighting, crawls at that point, no matter the rig it seems.
2600k, GigaByte R9 290x, 8 gis of ram on Windows 7 X64
FFS, this looks worse than the Shogun 2 or Empire launches...Sega...
no its not at least in my case
both had serious graphical glitches , horrendous loadings and even save corruption apart from typical AI problems
BTW: rome is expanding in my normal diff playthrough as carthage
This runs absolutely fine on my machine, but by the comments posted on here I am obviously missing out on things in this game that were in the others. So, what of the older games should I try first?

Medieval 2 Total War with Kingdoms and Stainless Mod. Hands down the daddy. Just thinking about it makes me feel strange. In a non homo way of course, but a weird nerdy machine interface sort of... fluster.
for the poor souls who bought the game (hihi, i own all tw games, so i knew better than to buy this when it came out) ... anyway ...
apparently you can patch the game with a beta patch to test it.
Quote:
Hi all,This is the beta of the patch due to go live tomorrow. If you’d like to test it to see if it solves some problems for you please follow the installation procedure:
In your steam game library, right click Total War: Rome II.
Then choose Properties and select the BETAS tab.
Finally select “patch1beta” from drop down list.
Please do be aware that this may not work or solve your specific issue and you take part in any beta tests at your own risk. If you do not wish to assume that risk please wait for the official live update tomorrow.
We are continually working to improve ROME II for all players; the next update after this one will be next week.
Patch notes for Total War: ROME II Patch 1 (due for release on 06/09/2013):
• Higher average frame rates with out-of-the-box settings (more conservative settings)
• Fix for DirectX 10.0 Lighting issue reported - environment map wasn't being created leading to black reflections.
• Fixed a sunken Samothrace temple complex world wonder on the Campaign map.
• Fixed defender being able to create encampments when involved in a combined battle.
• Added some localisation fixes to audio packs in French, Russian, Italian, German and Spanish.
• Fixed lock up in Multiplayer Campaign battles when a desynchronisation occurs. Players are now notified of the desynchronisation, and the battle ends.
• Fixed Multiplayer Campaign battle "overrun" prompt, which was not being shown to a player if they were a reinforcement and the other player was spectating.• Fixed corrupt loading screen when changing to fullscreen / windowed mode after a battle, and then going into another battle.
• Fix for Multiplayer Campaign host being unable to move the camera in campaign, after reloading a save game on some rare occasions.
• Safe guards added to prevent a very rare crash in coastal assault battles.
• Fix for game lock up during end turn sequence / Celtic AI faction turn in single player campaign.
• Improved AI use of walls on Athens large settlement battle map.<-- only Athens?
• Improvements to Auto-resolve balancing in Single Player and Multiplayer Campaign modes.
• Aligned ship unit upkeep costs with land units - made mercenary ships more expensive and non-mercenary ships cheaper.
• Fixed slow turning rates for transport ships.
• Improved civil war balancing in relation to campaign difficulty.
• Fixed vehicle ground pipes, to prevent Siege Towers becoming immovable when they are left empty during the Deployment Phase of a Siege Battle, then units were moved into the Siege Tower when the battle has started.
• Fixed bug when ramming sideways into moving ship, which caused the ramming ship stick to target and strafe along with it in battles.
• Reduced the chance of Naval units sometimes clipping through the ground or harbours / ports during Port Assault battles when attempting to disembark.
• Fixed issue where armies would be stuck in Muster stance and could not exit that stance in Campaign modes.
• Fixed case where spies could get stuck on top of fleets in Campaign modes.
• Fixed rare post battle lockup in Campaign modes.
• Improved unit pathfinding in Barbarian village battle maps (fixed no go zones).
• Fix for Multiplayer Campaign lock up when the player was reinforcing an AI ally who was victorious in battle, causing the player to become stuck with no victory / continue / exit battle user interface functionality.
• Fix for cultural influence bonus from the Shrine of Neptune building
• Fix for “Zone of Controls” of hidden armies being visible to both players in head to head Multiplayer Campaign mode on mouse-over.
• Assorted minor fixes to city battle maps.
• Fix for "Rome Wasn't Built in a Day" achievement failing to unlock when its requirements were met in some situations.
Lets hope they're working on some major AI fixes as well and slowing down everything a bit lol.
Fixed lock up in Multiplayer Campaign battles when a desynchronisation occurs. Players are now notified of the desynchronisation, and the battle ends.
So they haven't fixed the de-sync, but they are nice enough to notify you about it. That's adorable. Not to mention the fact that the problem shouldn't even exist, again.

whats the point of fixing this without fixing the horrendus turn timers , no one wants to play coop campaign right now anyways. 180-240sec turntimers are buzzkill
I tried the benchmark again with the beta patch, average is now 34.x instead of 27.x so there's a small improvement (Everything enabled.) and the world map (second prologue mission.) is still hovering around 55 - 59 (Capped to 59 via RadeonPro) so no change there.

It's even better, just think about it. They had the courtesy to add that the game will tell us that there is a de-sync even though everyone knows that already if one occured. Thx CA..
And wtf are "out-of-the-box" settings? The game defaulted to Extreme for me?!

The worldmap runs absolutely terrible for me. The battles are fine though. (Without the patch)

How about trying withe the one that started everything: Shogun Total War. And from there go up the timeline. Somehow, i still like more the first three games ( Shogun, Medieval and Rome ). That was the Creative Assembly independent times. Medieval 2, Empire, Napoleon, Shogun 2 and Rome 2 are from the Sega era. And Medieval 2 was probably the last with relatively few issues at launch.
Do not forget to get their expansions, too. Some are actually good.
