I just bought me a devkit aswell. (Have not recieved it yet, obviously)
Not only for personal enjoyement (which represents a huge part of the "must have") but also for practical research on the fascination of the virtual, since I am currently writing (meaning a lot of reading and studying for the last 8 month) a philosophical paper on the concept and fascination of the virtual. I'll use t with the kids from my school (from 12y-18y) and note/record their reactions. It will only represent a small part of the overall work which is 80% pure philosophical theory, but fairly interesting none the less.
I find it particularly interesting to be able to observe people who experience such a completely new way of superposing reality with simulated reality first hand. The great majority of the people who I will give the OR to try will never have heard of and much less experienced this kind of device.
To that end, the devkit represents a great opportunity to me. I just wish I would have had that idea earlier, but since school only starts in about 15 days, I can wait.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."
Prepare some good demos for them with a good headset (and a long cable!) I can only imagine that a good technical presentation will help with the immersion
Yes, I have beyerdynamic headphones I'll use and I will also need a good Laptop since the demos must run at a constant 60 fps minimum.
Now I need to prepare the Q/A forms and select an appropriate evaluation technique. So there is already something to do befor the OR arrives.
I am open to suggestions concerning the demos.
edit: wouldn't it be more appropriate to have this thread in the hardware section?

Can't you just use a desktop instead of twisting yourself in an unnecessary hunt for a laptop that would meet your requirements? + Much more difficult to knock it over with a cable from the OR
I think that, depending on the game, a laptop would fry itself in the backpack after not that much time. Unless there's a good ventilation in the backpack of course.

I'm not sure if the school even has good enough Desktops. Certainly not with gaming grade gfx cards. But I'll ask around in the IT departement.

I've seen some backpacks somewhere that are mostly just a fabric grid so the computer can breathe.
If you find some, let me know.
EDIT: looks like 'mesh' is the keyword to search for
mostly cheap looking and kids' packs though
I know some people are using stripped hydration packs for their laptops/wireless gear
it's currently a bit in the air which way the wireless thing will go
on the other hand, there's the desktop platform that does all the rendering on the desktop and sends it wirelessly to the rift
i got myself an asus WAVI to do that (usb is unreliable but video is solid)
and the sixense controller would be a part of this (launching this month on kickstarter)
wireless controllers but with limited range
then there's putting the laptop on your back and doing everything there.
there's a YEI system kickstarter coming soon that will probably be useful with walking here.
Don't know about using hands though.. the new sixense base station looked pretty huge and heavy compared to their old wired one so i don't know if we can have it with our 'backtop'.
Imagine all the nerds ( probably some of us ) that don't like how their girlfriends look ..( being polite here .. ) ..and just hook her up to a VR kit and ask her to blow you while you change the settings and have a hot star replacing her in your VR kit...

So I have an Oculus Rift dev kit I'm borrowing off a friend for the weekend. I've only used it for about 30 mins or so but I must admit I'm a little disappointed in the resolution. It's like sitting really close to an old CRT TV
