Duuuuddddeee, it's just overall ratings... Do they even matter? Give me an 80 Ogbonna over the slow 87 Vidić any day of the week (especially in the pacewhoring FUT, since this is a FUT list). From within the list, I'd rather have Benzema than Van Persie, Yaya instead of Xavi etc.
With overall ratings it all comes down to what EA thinks is the most important for a specific position (in other words, the overall rating formula). Wingers f.ex., they believe pace and dribbling are pretty important components in the overall of a winger, which leads to such bullshit as Jesus Navas being in the top 50 of all players (dunno, how is 85 of Navas better than Reus's 85 though).
I think you are disregarding the competition's strenght, the players have proven themselves in and furthermore disregarding the number of years players have played at that level. Let's face it, CL is where the best football is played at and the Premier League is the best league there is, regardless of the hype surrouding it. With no disrespect to the Portugese League, it's not even close when compared to BPL. Once these players get transfered to a better league and succed there, they will get a boost surely. Fame? Sure, it's a factor, it should be, if you consider how these players got famous... Playing for a number of years at a higher level...
If we consider your suggestions, Phillipp Hosiner scored 32 last season, is he even better than Jackson Martinez? I didn't even know who Hosiner was, until he threw my team out of the CL qualification this season... Here's another scenario, less likely of course, borderline science fiction scenario one would say: Messi scores just 10 this season, is he out of the top 50 in fifa 15?
You can never make a perfect list with subjective opinions mate, it's futile like harry_theone said... But what do I know, it's just an opinion from another Canadian

yeah, those are brilliant, aren't they... an overall calculation, that heavily favours certain positions like fullbacks and goalkeepers... Maicon, Pablo Armero, Julio Cesar, Zuniga, Victor Valdez, Sebastien Frey in top 50...
this list is even worse, sorry no 2014 version yet, you can compare it to 2013's list:

I hope the AI will not cheat this time. I always stop playing the FIFA games because I get mad of the cheating judges and the enemy team AI. So many cheated offsides and free kicks that its not even funny...

"If we consider your suggestions, Phillipp Hosiner scored 32 last season, is he even better than Jackson Martinez?"
No. Why? Because portugese league is way much stronger than Austrian.
I know that the list doesn't make any sense and I'm sure even EA doesn't know the exact algorithm of it. However the players I've mentioned before could easily fit into the list since portugese league is 3 team like so does La Liga aswell. Of course it's not the same to score 26 goals in EPL and portugese league but still.
There is no point to argue about the list anymore because it's like comparing apple to oranges.

no point playing in multiplayer if the default gameplay is too unrealistic and arcadish. :/

Yeah, the problem with multiplayer is, people only want to win, they don't care at all about realism, they do not accept the slow and balanced gameplay that you can set from the sliders + full-manual controls.
They want fast-paced action, fast auto-long passes, superhuman uber-skilled players, crazy ping pong matches that have nothing to do with real football. Have you seen Fifa 14's videos? It's like the game is running in 2X. I used to set manual controls all the time when playing Seasons for example, but after the 40th defeat with like just 5-6 wins I told myself, alright it's time to go derp as well! Now I basically only play 2vs2 matches with friends, though it's pretty damned fun I must say.

I don't like the MP in FIFA because everybody wants to play with the "good" teams while I like to start a season with some underdog team and make it reach the top of A group. I never understood the point of starting with some "huge" team like Milan or Arsenal or Chelsea, etc. There's no challenge in that at all.

Which still looks better than PES this year, and amazing, there is rain.
But that second goal wow...

Yeah the second goal looked very unnatural.
Funny to see that still only one person per team can jump in the air in front of goal.
Makes for very realistic corner kicks. Not.

To be fair, rain and snow in Fifa are nearly as annoying as dribbling abusers and chronic rage quitters xD

Like to see you implement rain, when you had to implement other things as well |
Rain was one of my most important todo tasks back when I worked a little on my flight sim after I finished my project. Then work and life happened and no rain. Shame, because I had some cute ideas how to make local rain (below clouds).
