I've beaten the game and I didn't think it was scary at all. Not even close to the same league as the original Amnesia or Penumbra games. There is no feeling of dread and the enemies look comical, like a mix of a pig and the Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Frictional made the mistake of thinking The Chinese Room could make a game.

You mean Frictional loves $$$ and they agreed to make what started as a free mod for their game a commercial product.

The Chinese Room can make games, just not in a conventional way. They seem to be great storytellers, but of course that is something that won't satisfy most of the gamers.
I think most of the negativity for this sequel stems from the fact that they turned a well-made and known scary horror game's first part (at least it's better known and more established than Dear Esther and Gone Home) into more of an exploration game, with their own style, which of course, was not a very smart move because a lot of people fell for it after the quality of the first game.

5h long [played in two sittings] , not scary mehhh shift-delete
and story line ... oh my what the hell was that a Butcher that lost his wife travels to Mexico there he finds old parchments of god making ... back in London he creates a steam powered Butchery to clean the streets of filth [orphans , whores , bums etc..]that in reality was made to create pig like creatures that would clean the earth
what a disaster

Unfortunately for the pigs game, Penumbra and Amnesia games meant a lot of interaction with the environment. As a main gameplay element this will always mean a deeper "being there" / in the game feeling.
The Chinese Room, in their "stubbornness" to create their own kind/style of game wanted to put their finger on and thus the final product now lacks the most enjoyable gameplay element for me.
So in my eyes this is a big "meh", therefore my money will (first?) go to Outlast (on a sale ofc ).

Yeah, if there is one thing I miss it is interactivity.
New update btw:, seems like they added/changed files:
msvcp100.dll
msvcr100.dll
xinput1_3.dll

Its at least equal to the impact the first Amnesia had on me. The atmosphere is constantly on edge, just like it was in the first amnesia. Outlast would be a must play for me. While Machine for pigs is for genre aficionados.

If you think of this as what it is, that is; not a numbered sequel, but a free mod-turned-commercial product from a third party, you'll probably appreciate it.
It's like complaining the "Justine" DLC wasn't exactly like the main Amnesia game. No one demanded it to be, no one cared if it was.. in fact chances are you never even played Justine anyway.
That's the problem. While not a lot people cared about Justine, a free DLC (read: mod) with no connection to the Amnesia storyline... a hell of a lot of people cared about the sequel to Amnesia (which -surprise- was going to be a second "Justine" before it was decided it was big enough to be turned commercial). They didn't quite clarify (or I failed to take notice, because I admit I wasn't paying much attention pre-release) this wasn't going to be "Amnesia 2".. hence the expectations we had are not getting met.

They shouldn't clarify that Amnesia: AMFP is Amnesia "2", because it's name itself claims this as it is. It's pretty obvious, IMO.
If it was named simply "A machine for pigs" then maybe we would understand/accept easier the stray from the classics. A good example in this direction is Tomb Raider series and Lara Croft and The Guardian of Light. The latter being a good game, but made a lot of fans of classic Tomb Raider to raise their eyebrow. Before and AFTER playing the game.
EDIT
Oh, and Justine, as a mod or whatever it was classified, was a true Amnesia game, utilizing the same mechanics and the same gameplay.

That's what I'm saying. That's why they DID have to clarify how it was going to play since they had chosen the same name. Had the used another name, or it was a free mod, or even DLC, things would be different.

Yes but let's say it wasn't up to the main game's quality but naturally people didn't particularly care.
Then again it's not like Frictional didn't make Penumbra: Requiem.. which (I've only played a little) is probably a bigger departure from the main Penumbra games than A Machine of Pigs from the Amnesia formula.. Also rated quite a bit lower.

Well, I am not sure what to make of it...
Is this Machine for Pigs a streamlining of the Frictional games (that comes with the actual current in videogames, unfortunately) or it's just The Chinese's Room mark here... ?

Anyone else reminded strongly of the BioShock way of storytelling? Hearing in audio recordings things about the protagonist's view of life (note I'm not far in, I just visited the church, but I think I can see how things will unfold..), the machine etc instantly reminds me of Ryan or Comstock.
It's like that was the model of the game.

Encountered my first enemy, didn't bat an eyelash.
What's so scary about pigs? It's not as if your character is made of Truffle.
Turn off the light, find a spot to hide in, wait a few seconds and move on.
"I think Call of Duty resonates because it's believable and relatable," Sledgehammer Games cofounder Michael Condrey says.
Believable and relatable...Yep, sounds like Call of Duty

Yeah. Which is almost the same as in the first game.
The difference? At least in the first game when you switched off the lantern sanity effects kicked in.
That being said one of my latter encounters with the pig-men was a bit more scary because with the light turned off I couldn't see shit!

just completed it. overall a resounding meh. some good parts, but a lot of walking down straight corridors slowly while listening to dear Ester-ish speeches near the end.
Inferior to the first game in every aspect.
To think that i wanted to blindly preorder this

I agree with you guys, I finally managed to try the game, and I have to say that sadly the first couple of hours weren't exactly memorable. Still enjoyable, but different, and not in a good way imo.
It's basically become something that scarily resembles a Dear Esther - 'Horror' edition, with its quite straightforward gameplay, lack of inventory + very limited interaction and more focus on the narrative aspect.
The creepy atmosphere is definitely there, especially when it comes to the sound effects which are truly spot-on, the scares on the other hand..not so much. It's more about the psychological tension now, a walking simulator with a few elementary puzzles here and there. I also briefly encountered one of the monsters, but I avoided it quite easily. I hope it gets better later on because so far it's disappointing.
