And this was updated on Majorgeeks yesterday but I don't think I've heard of it before.

(Though I've only really heard of the two most popular so that doesn't say much.)

Those Micro$ofters are bunch of comedians. They brought the Start button back but it opens the Metro interface! Btw, StartIsBack + is not working on these Win 8.1 RTM releases. Heck. Sad

Edit: StartIsBack 1.0 RC4 is working on Windows 8.1 Enterprise RTM. Very Happy

Their still testing it from what I read and once it's officially released, they should have a fully working version out. If not, I'm not updating to 8.1 until I get my Start menu back ! (Hates the Start Screen)

I think its time to replace Windows 7 with windows 8.1... Since BF4 will require it and overall seems to be better than Win 7. Which release you guys recommend?

Wait, what? BF4 no way requires Windows 8.

http://www.vg247.com/2013/09/09/battlefield-4-pc-system-requirements-released-by-dice-recommends-windows-8/

Recommends. Requires Vista, which is a given since there's no DX9 path, right?

It can use DirectX 11.1 apparently for whatever it was (Some performance thing I believe.) and 8.1 is recommended since it replaces Windows 8 which would otherwise be the required OS to use DX 11.1 (Since MS locks it to that to get people to upgrade.) anyways Windows 7 x64 and DX 11.0 should be fine for nearly all functionality in the game. Try Microsoft.Windows.8.1.Enterprise.RTM.X64.Volume.English.DVD-WZT. Unfortunately there's no activation method yet. You can't customize some personal settings and a watermark appears on the desktop after couple of hours, saying that activation is needed. But that's not a big deal. Wink

A nag screen also appears every X hours stating you have to activate windows (So it takes you to the settings menu where this can be done.) but you can alt-tab out of it or close it down via alt-f4 should that be preferred. Smile

I thought W8.1 comes out in October? What did I miss? Also shouldn't we who have W8 via MSDNAA also be getting that update?

Since the watermark comes, does it remove wallpaper? I remember Win 7 doing that, if it was not activated. So its fully working, only with that "annoying" watermark, updates and shit? Will probably install tomorrow after work.

Edit: all of my games are capped to 30 fps. the f*ck?

8.1 seems to have changed some stuff from 8 as I tried to install it on my neighbors PC that is running 8 Pro and it keeped popping up an error about the cpu not being able to run it. I also noticed on my older laptop that I cannot use IE anymore as it constantly crashes where it was fine when running 8 Pro.

Despite the watermark you still have a fully functional OS. No timebombs or such crippling crap. Some minor personal settings are disabled such as changing the account picture. But who needs an account picture anyway? Very Happy What happens when this watermark appears? I guess nothing. Someone might say it's annoying but for me, it's something that doesn't bother me. Just reboot and it's gone for couple of hours. My desktop is solid black, never tried a wallpaper and I really can't tell what happens with the wallpaper when activation watermark shows up. Anyways, KMS activation servers will appear soon. I guess. Wink

Edit: Ok, watermark showed up and nothing has changed. Wallpaper is still there. Smile

Installed 8.1 RTM today at work cause we have a VL agreement. I like what I see gonna put it on my desktop. I had hesitated with 8 because of the mapped drive issue with 8 via GPO. It seams this is fixed in 8.1. Any tweaks I should know about? Running on a I7 2600k 16GB RAM and 120GB SSD.

Question - I am wiping my mum's laptop. It's a Dell i3, 4gb of RAM, not exactly fantastic although it does have a new 128gb SSD.

Question is - should I stick with Windows 7 or go for 8.1? Is there any performance decrease in 8.1 for older hardware?

I would say 8.1 will perform marginally better than 7, but it is a tiny difference. The question should probably be, can my mum deal with the change in OS, possibly not.

http://news.softpedia.com/news/Windows-8-1-to-Get-Large-Update-in-Early-2014-386344.shtml

Seems that in Spring 2014 Microsoft will release a large update for Windows 8.1
(Something like a service pack.)
