New Steam Guard feature to help protect your items

Quote:
We have made the necessary adjustments to this security feature and are planning on turning it on Monday September 23rd, 2013.

The new changes should not affect users with multiple devices in the same household. If you have a device that has Steam Guard enabled in your household for 15 days and you enable Steam Guard on a new device in your household you should not be affected by the cooldown for the new device.

To answer a couple of good questions that people have asked:

Q: What happens if a user has a single device and formats it? Will they be trade restricted?

A: Nope, this will not trigger a restriction as long as the device was Steam Guarded for 15 days.

Q: What about web browsers and cookies? If I clear my cookies will I have a cooldown?

A: Nope, this will not trigger a restriction as long as the browser was Steam Guarded for 15 days.

Q: If I am traveling but use the same device will I hit this restriction?

A: No you will not as you are using the same device.

If your ISP changes it could trigger the restriction, but that's an unlikely occurrence.

I thought the answer to the last question would read:

" Nope, this will not trigger a restriction as long as your ISP was Steam Guarded for 15 days. "

SteamOS

The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.

Sounds pretty good, actually... Streaming and media player options ftw! (With the latter actually being very conspicuous by it's absense since Steam started selling software.)

From what I can gather, one of the issues with Linux is having a decent build that's stable and up-to-date. Seems like this is designed to address that... Which is good, right? Smile

Sounds interesting, if they actually manage to keep the games coming. You'll still need something to run OS on, obviously (I suppose everyone assumes this will be one of the announcements)...

In my case, where I have my PC connected to the TV, this won't work that well, since switching between operating systems just to play on the TV is not the most convenient thing to do. Windows environment is not that gamepad friendly even with the Big Picture mode either.

Depends what else you use your PC for when it's connected to the TV? If they're making the SteamOS a media hub as well as gaming centre, then surely that covers everything?

Very interested in the game streaming with this... My girlfriend hates playing games on my PC in my bedroom, but if we can hook her laptop up to the TV and play in the living room, then it'll be pretty sweet. I assume it'll be using the CPU/GPU of my PC (like the Nvidia Shield), so shouldn't matter so much if her laptop is a bit weedy.

If it's a HTPC kind of a thing, sure. But I mean that in my case, it's a standard desktop PC, which I use for all of my PC needs, and it happens to be connected to my HDTV as well (like another monitor).

Me playing a game on my TV involves me getting up from my chair, sitting on the couch and picking up the controller. Minor points of inconvenience include switching the primary screen to the TV and possibly switching primary audio device, if needed (I wish there was a way to create toggleable profiles for those - switching screens kinda works with CCC, but it's a bit wonky). Not really worth it to switch between operating systems for that Smile

For this to work they're going to have to make the installation process extremely easy. Console derpas have problems upgrading their GPU drivers, let alone installing OSs.

"Just click next and the game will be installed" has been Valve's way of doing things so I don't worry about that.

Really exciting news!

Streaming feature sounds interesting. Install SteamOS on your crappy, not for gaming, laptop and just stream games in, for the times when you are too lazy to go and sit in front of PC. Razz I wonder how big is the input lag.
