While there's gonna be all sorts of tricky issues with developing really high end graphic drivers for linux to get the steam box to replicate the best PC's that prolly not the end of the market gabe is interested in initially.
I haven't had much to do with Linux for a long time but I couple of months ago after I replaced all the PC's in an IT learning center for seniors where I volunteer, I thought maybe worth checking out the old PC's to see if they can be useful to some of the senior who don't have a few grand for a so-called smart TV.
I stuck the latest ubuntu distro in first and the old clunkers went like rockets (they were compaqs with athlons n 4 gigs of memory) much better than they ever went with win 7 & @ 87 services running in back.
So then I threw in an NV210 & ubuntu xbmc frodo & the machines went great - much better than those media play boxes or a smart TV where they use transcoding 1080 HD no laggy starts or delays, sub titles work fine every time, so I managed to make a big mob of boxes to smarten up peeps' TVs for $50 a pop. Better media playing & streaming than either xbox or PS3 on a six year old pc.
Many of us tweak the crap out of our PCs but lotsa gamers not only don't know how they don't wanna know. Running linux means all that windows crap has already been tweaked out.
Of course gaming machines are gonna need a better graphics card than a 210 but as long as steam aim for the middle of the market where people are happy with a relatively inexpensive box, the Steam box will go well.
Valve has to have a go at this cause their digital distro model all about PC's will go down the gurgler unless steam & can offer something as good as ps4 or xbox in the same price range but easily upgradeable.
Steam will get a chunk of the console market if only cause his games are gonna be a bit cheaper.
Once steam gets a chunk of gaming even if it is as a lower end than most nforce habitues favour, NV will pay attention, they cannot afford to give ati or intel a look in anywhere at any price point. If you doubt that look at the money NV wastes on creating their swathe of hugely over lapping graphics card models. Many of those cards must be uneconomic yet NV churns em out to make sure no one else sneaks in a model that could garner market share.
The hassles are gonna be around drivers no doubt & not just graphics ones configuring a linux onto a lan can still be a pain if the NIC isn't that common but if valve are smart they will deal with as many of those as they can inhouse.
xbmcbuntu is the result of work by two quite disparate open source entities yet it is stable easy to install & run and while it isn't as complex & fraught as building a platform for the latest games, if that was made using open source believers, Steam should be able to do wonders with a professional development team.

99.9% fake post but some good guesses anyway.
tl;dr
Announcement #2: SteamBox. Reference design: AMD CPU, nvidia GPU, uses nvidia streaming. Big partnership with nvidia, SteamOS to have awesome nvidia drivers.
Announcement #3: Source 2. Win/Mac/Linux compatibility, no DX compatibility at all, as for console ports, PS4 support might or might not come eventually.
Bonus: "A game". Redeemable with every new nvidia/SteamBox purchase.

Good luck with that in Linux.
Both Lovefilm (uk) and Netflix use Silverlight and mono not worky very well (although I do believe that it is now possible via some work ( http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=154888&pid=1324289 ) |

I live in hope, but I can't see it anytime soon, especially in the UK (although netflix changes are 'worldwide' I presume )

Nope, it uses a closed source app.
they could do that I suppose.
Time will tell, its one of the reason I still use windows for things like Lovefilm / Netflix and BluRay 3D
Either way with Valve backing linux in a big way it could be exciting times for people like me

That's why I think it's likely fake. It includes every rumor that has been written out there (like that nvidia thingy) so that when you read it you go "oh wait, didn't I read about x, y, z? Oh then it must be real!"

Valve could do something grand yet again. Let's hope they deliver, always nice to see some changes or different options. I love the idea of the steambox, don't think it's for me but it doesn't have to be for it to be great

Perhaps you get "enthusiastic" just about anything, but what is to get enthusiastic about with Linux? Either they'll do their best to hide it like a plague ala Android, and then it's not fucking Linux anymore, or it will be shit like just about any other distro out there, a drop in the ocean, full of ugly software and complete lack of any coherence and consistency. Sounds so exciting. Let me get my enthusiasm level up.
