Haters gonna hate, but that thing is better for shooters than any regular gamepad. Trackpad is not going to be a mouse, but it'll get a whole lot closer than a goddamn stick. Racing games I can see on it as well, fighting games not so much; even the recent Batman I don't see how they can work on this.

This is probably my favorite of the three announcements.
100% game support, very precise (they say) and 100% open:
Quote: | The Steam Controller was designed from the ground up to be hackable. Just as the Steam Community and Workshop contributors currently deliver tremendous value via additions to software products on Steam, we believe that they will meaningfully contribute to the design of the Steam Controller. We plan to make tools available that will enable users to participate in all aspects of the experience, from industrial design to electrical engineering. We can’t wait to see what you come up with. |
What more do you want?

TWIN PEAKS is "something of a miracle."
"...like nothing else on television."
"a phenomenon."
"A tangled tale of sex, violence, power, junk food..."

"The Steam Controller is built around a new generation of super-precise haptic feedback, employing dual linear resonant actuators. These small, strong, weighted electro-magnets are attached to each of the dual trackpads. They are capable of delivering a wide range of force and vibration, allowing precise control over frequency, amplitude, and direction of movement.
This haptic capability provides a vital channel of information to the player - delivering in-game information about speed, boundaries, thresholds, textures, action confirmations, or any other events about which game designers want players to be aware. It is a higher-bandwidth haptic information channel than exists in any other consumer product that we know of. As a parlour trick they can even play audio waveforms and function as speakers."
I really really really want to try out this controller.

Not that I am wooptidoo about a controller, but it looks like it's the closest you can get to a keyb+mouse replacement that is still functional so guess they did a good job (If you want to play on a couch ).

Hmm, that does look pretty strange, would be inclined to at least try it though.

I can move and look around crouching, being able not just shoot portals but press use or number keys, jump in Portal. I'd like to see how you do that easily, like intended, with that controller |
I just tried that button config on my 360 pad. That is, I held the pad, and mimiced pressing buttons in the places I expect the buttons to be. It's actually not bad. I would say it'll take some getting used to, but...
Left thumb - Move
Right thumb - Look
Right index finger - Shoot portal
Right wedding fing - Crouch
Left index finger - Use/number keys
I don't think it's too bad... certainly the lay-out is better than the PS360 pads, and it actually reminds me of the N64 controller, in a way; that, too, was a step-way from the standards of the time, but everyone got used to thumbsticks and weirdly placed trigger buttons.

No Jack, not by a long shot.
- XBO pad has no touch sensitive surfaces at all as opposed to 3 on this
- XBO pad has some feedback on triggers, this has it on the two large touch areas (they don't mention anything on triggers)
- DS4 only has a touch area in the center - on this it's a touch *screen* in that spot
- Both pads have sticks, this has none
So I'm not sure what similarities you see, but I see something entirely different.

someone HAD to say it eventually |
iPhoNatan said that in the very first page. Of course he was unable or unwilling to understand it's not a console.

I must say that that thing at least has me intrigued to the point where I want to know how well it works.
Sadly, it's never going to be supported on the actual consoles, so that means using it on a PC...where I'm more likely to use an actual KB/M or an actual gamepad
