So I pulled my old SLR out of storage (and by that I mean the dusty shelve in my office) and had a day out taking snaps. It turns out buying film these days is a real pain in the ass so I want to look at pricing up a cheap DSLR if that's even possible.
The SLR I have is a Minolta Dynax 5 (cheap one I bought years ago) so ideally I want something at least equal to that. No obvious budget yet but as cheap as is humanly possible without it being pointless.

Canon or Nikon, you can't go wrong with either. IF you don't want to wait for an answer get a hold of Fisk. He knows his stuff

To be honest, Sony NEX A7 or A7r.
If a optical viewfinder is a must, Nikon D5200 looks interesting from the lower end of the budget spectrum, with good and relatively inexpensive lenses available.

1. What do you want to use it for? (What, where and at what hour will you mostly shoot)?
2. How important is a large array of different lenses/lens types and a used-lens/paraphernalia?
3. Are you interested in filming with it, at all?

Beginner level photography, primarily I'll probably use it to take snaps of the kid but I've got some for fun photography competitions at work that I want to jump into. Likely to be mainly daytime shooting out and about on walks in the country/parks/forests/playgrounds/garden/my sofa.
All depends on cost, its unlikely I'll buy a huge number of lenses but having some options would be good.
I can live without filming, depends on the price difference.

In that case I'd buy a 50mm lens f/1,8 - the Nikon D5200 has a great balance between sharpness and good low-light performance for a camera at that level and a dynamic range of 13.9ev's
