If you guys have Enterprise or Pro, activated with a KMS server (online or local), you still cannot activate the upgraded install.

It took me a while to figure out I actually have to get it from windows store instead of windows update.

Seems like a nice update I guess.

The best thing is, if the installation fails the installer will be kind enough to delete everything you downloaded and start re-downloading it again once you press "Try again" Smile

Nope, just download the GA updates through Windows Update and you're good to go.

I switched to a clean Windows 8.1 RTM install three days ago, and now installed the update, seems all is well.

Still had a Win8 MSDNAA key from university, but it refused to accept it during installation. Had to use a pirate key, then when in Windows disable network, change the product key and do phone activation. Weird, but now everything works fine.

Also, with Classic Shell and some tweaks you hardly notice Metro UI anymore at all. I am actually quite happy, didn't run into any problems yet.

Or do i need to wait for a new torrent with 8.1 preactivated and do a clean install?

Cheers.

Can someone help me out? I did clean install of windows 8 and then installed 8.1. It went all smooth but when I install a program. A tile is not being created and have to add them manually by doing "pin to start"

Any fix for this?

Not all programs create a direct tile, from what I know at least, to see everything you should click the little white arrow a bit down on the start screen (Move the mouse cursor around since it's hidden initially.) and that will then list all installed applications, if you right click on one and select the go to folder option you'll see that it's pretty much the same system as the start menu from earlier Windows versions but with a different interface. Well. I didn't had that problem with Windows 8. It was just create tiles for ALL installed application/games regardless. And now with 8.1, not getting any.

It's an intentional change as far as I know. People complained about the start screen getting cluttered too easily so now you have to pin programs manually from the all apps menu.

That's fucking lame. I guess those are the same people who have this too

I had quite number of application/games installed and I never thought of this as an issue at all. :\

It sucks because I didn't put any icons on desktop and have to go to each folder and do it manually, eh.

Wait, did you check the all apps menu? It's accessed by the little arrow button that JBeckman was talking about:
 Spoiler:

If you actually went through the installation process for a particular program it should have put the usual shortcuts to the exe, uninstall, etc. there, just like with Win 7's start menu. If you mean the programs that are left over from the previous Windows install then yes, you'll have to pin them manually I'm afraid.

You don't need to go to folders, you go to the All Apps menu and pin to start menu from there. If the application installs shortcuts into the start menu, it will be there. In W8 it was the same except some of the start menu shortcuts got automatically pinned.

Edit: "Pro"-tip for those who don't want to hunt around for the arrow: Ctrl+Tab will toggle between All Apps and the Start screen Smile

EDIT : Thanks for the CTRL+Tab shortcut Very Happy Very Happy

One thing I don't like about the new Start Menu, is that it doesn't remember which display I use it on anymore.
In W8, you could move it to another screen and it would stay there whenever you toggled it on or off. Now it always resets back to the primary screen.

Have you checked the torrent comments for the version you have and about 8.1 at various trackers?

No, because you need to enter a legit win8 key to install the win8.1 upgrade.
You'll be able to download the win8.1 update with one of those default keys, but you need a legit win8 key to actually install the update.

Just have some patience, I'm sure what you want isn't that far away. Very Happy
just keep an eye on something like the MDL forums.

Yeah, on my private tracker there's no updates.

There's no new W8.1 either.

I don't usually bother with external torrent sites since this one is pretty much updated 24/7 + it's safe and i know everything on it is "legit" Razz

Actually I had a brain fart when i worded that.
A default key will let you install 8.1, but you still need a legit win8 key to activate 8.1 after installation.

You're better off just waiting for an 8.1 iso, so you can do clean installs whenever you need to anyway.

I'm still running the 8.1 preview version which is good until Jan, so I figure Ive got plenty of time to wait. Very Happy
