what a derp. I never played any BG games before either, but after some initial mistakes (what's this THAC0 shit? higher must be better, so dual wield seem to be the best choice! Same with armor numbers! Laughing ), i got the hang of it nicely. And really, shit like this could be a problem when the game launched, but nowadays with the internet, you can have this kind of info in a heartbeat. And as the guy said, read the fking manual.

My fucking god, BG2EE has some heavy bugs, keep multiple saves people ... and if it crashes while saving, do NOT load that, it's corrupt, load a previous save.

Hoping for a quick patch.

With phrases like this one, it's officially gotten the derp generation's seal of approval, hands down!

" I understand that if some walked into BG2 these days (even an updated version that was cleaned up) it would be very hard to enjoy". Not even Gametrailers would go this far Laughing

He's also a fan of our "beloved" Anita. Says a lot about the man...The review left me...speechless. When i played BG for the first time, i took my time reading the damn manuals. That was the thing to do ( unless you are a five year old and you never went to the bloody school ). But this guy....this guy just could not be bothered to do that. Or read the intro story. For someone that claims that he started on Commodore and he is as hardcore as they come...no amount of words can described what he actually is.

Funny thing, he's bashed so bad in the comments, so i guess he will follow Anita's example and he'll disable the comments! Very Happy

gotta say sometimes there's a strange feeling about this game, cause it's really different from today's games. One of my group members wanted to do something, and he always bugged me about his quest. I was like "yeah, ok, we'll go there soon, shut up". Then after some time (i gotta say, a long fucking time, but i sleep a lot to rest, so time goes by quick Laughing), he was like "fuck you, you're taking too damn long, im leaving this group to do my shit alone". I was like WTF??? YOU'RE LEAVING? Morrigan waited almost the whole game in DA1 so i could kill the old bitch she wanted Laughing Laughing Laughing
No one's in a hurry in today's games, but in the old days, bitches were fierce Very Happy

Regardless how awful i this review, it has one point.
The thing is that BG2 (classic), as first D&D game is not really accessible.

No tutorial, anything. Just start of D&D experience right in the dungeon, with middle level character. More like BG1 expansion experience, then game on its own.

BG1 is much more accessible. Especially, since you start from level 1 and then build up your character, gradually getting to know all abilities. You even get that "attempt" of tutorial, with Candlekeep monks.

Let them go, then try to increase your rep by donating to a temple. I think you can get them back then.

So is this worth a buy or are you still better off with Baldur's Gate Trilogy or something?

I passed on the original enhanced edition because it just looked like a cashgrab to me with no improvements that you can't get from mods for free.

Once they fix some serious bugs and they fix the UI's active/inactive button colors then it's gonna be better than the original. Mainly because of the new content, better renderer, better UI,journal and quickloot system, easier installation etc. Also, you can use mods on this, I'm using just Unfinished Business.

But I wouldn't pay for it ...

Also, they haven't integrated BG2 with ToB in one continuous world.

^^^Or they could read the thick manual that came with BG2... or the PDF one that comes with digital versions.

Oh, right, 'reading'.

I started both games with no knowledge back in the day (13), I didn't even know what a ruleset was. Buy good armour, buy good weapons, buy powerful spells. It's pretty simple even if you have no idea, you just won't be as efficient.

My biggest problem with RPGs that have complex character build system (not to say that AD&D is complex, but it adds up if starting with higher level characters), is that not even reading a manual will properly prepare you in how to create character.

You can not know, without playing game at least once, what kind of abilities are useful and what are kind of waste, what kind of weapon specialization is good and what isn't and similar.

This is why early game flow is better in BG1, at least for begginers. Even if you make some errors in early customization, you can fix them up in later leveling.

Frankly you don't need to think much while levelling for most of the classes. For fighters/rangers/paladins, just throw proficiency points into wherever you want and use same weapons. Priest automatically gain spells and mages get anything they need from scrolls. Only way that you can screw yourself is by dual-classing (at wrong time, into wrong class, with wrong stats...) or by playing Sorcerer. Those two cases really need proper planning.

The real problem I see is that certain kits are way too weak in BG2. That's just the problem with AD&D rules and how Bioware implemented them. And the biggest problem is that they sound so good that many newbies will pick them first. Without warnings they'll pick Kensai, Wizard Slayer, some fancy useless Rogue or Bard kit and be gimped forever. On top of that, later in ToB weak 2nd edition class balance enters play as well. Spellcasters gain godly spells, while thieves particularly, are left with scraps.

First patch for BG2EE to hit soon, it fixes the uber-bug : memory leak which leads to a save crash and a busted playthrough.

Regarding bg manuals they are full of various info copy paster from ad&d books.
But the problem is usually some key info is missing. Like what kind of bonus weapon spcialization does on each level. Or breakdown of all possible bonuses or penalties for thac or ac.

And going back to actual rulebooks to get missing info is not always solutions since game rules Re modified.
