Except in cases when you didn't happen to buy a TV with those features, and don't want to actually buy a whole TV again just to play those files :P
Also, not sure what the situation is now, but when I checked last, not every TV supported all the necessary formats properly. DTS support was kinda rare, for example, which would exclude a whole lot of mkv movies.
I've got a Roku 2XD at my mom's house running a plex server on her computer that streams all the shows and movies I put on there for her. Has HDMI and Composit out on it so it works with any tv.
The movies are 720/1080P with DTS audio as well as a few others. She loves it.
Then you get the added netflix, amazon etc
I've gotten 3 of the Roku 2 XDs on craigs for like 40-45 each.
