It doesn't "pop", it just has better image quality. The colours aren't crushed, they're slightly over saturated due to an over use of bloom. The retail version is under saturated ("crushed"), far less detail in them there. I'll ignore that though and put that down to shit colour settings (gamma is fucked on retail, stupid haze over the screen).
Then, to take the top 3 shots as an example:
- Nice foliage removal to save on lighting (no shadows from trees on the left anymore), nice lack of detail on rail tracks as well for example. So much better in the E3 version. There also seems to be some annoying film grain filter on.
- Note the complete lack of AO in the retail game
- Again, AO + roads. Also note the advertising and such, so much clearer in the E3 version.
Overall, texture quality is a lot lower. AO is completely gone. More importantly though? That E3 version is running at a higher resolution. You can tell just by looking at the car - huge difference in detail. The E3 version had different PPAA going on as well (check out the fence on the top shot).
Don't get me wrong, I'd still love to be able to play this game, but this is ridiculous
Edit: in fact, just give me that damn build from E3, clearly was running on a PC
i hope you make these assessments from some full res uncompressed video somewhere you have? you of all people should know how laughable these claims are based on tiny thumbnails which are made from low quality internet streams.
i watched digital foundry 1080p 60fps video of forza5, and it looked pretty great. nowhere in entire 5 min race did i thought "damn, this looks under saturated".
interestingly you ignored my point about different sun angle resulting in different shadow position and lighting.
texture quality a lot different? i just don't see that, at least not in this low res comparison. what i noticed they changed some textures completely to different ones in some parts of the track.
also, maybe it's just personal preference, but i think AO is one of the worst and ugliest effects that became standard last few years, so i salute lack of AO in retail version.
i'm all for laughing at xbone and forza5's disgusting micro transactions, but i think visuals is one thing they did right. they are clean and smooth not filled with useless effects (ok sun shafts are a bit overused).
Your remark about the sun position wasn't there yet when I was typing that
It's wrong though, just look at the last shot. It's meant to be the same time of day (give or take), but somehow it does indeed cast hugely different shadows in some places. Take the first shot as an example though; angle's nearly identical, yet there's less shadows being cast, because they removed some trees and shit.
And yes, I have watched all the Digital Foundry stuff
I do think it's quite undersaturated, much in the same manner that GT5 is. Roads for example look unbelievably unrealistic, with this strange grey/beige-ish tint they have. Same goes for the shadows; where in the E3 version they're definitely too dark, in the retail version they're lighter to give the impression that they're proper soft shadows while they're not.
As for textures, take another look at DF's stuff. The cars are done magnificently, you won't find anything on there or the big things on the track. But everything on the side? Lot less detail in a lot of places. And maybe you don't like AO, when done properly it's still an IQ enhancing tool. And they got it right in the E3 version; again, they apply too much bloom so the effect is a little exaggerated, but especially on the buildings the AO looks fantastic.
Again, don't get me wrong, I wish I could get the game (and its predecessors for that matter). It's way ahead of crap like GT and I'd love to get my hands on it, but not at the expense of the shit console that comes with it, not until that's at least €100 cheaper than the PS4 and without Kiderp. Nor just for that one game
And there are also some technical things they do ridiculously well (again, watch the DF videos - their LoD switching is clever). But they definitely had to cut some corners to maintain 60
That kind of a comparison is meaningless at this point, since the whole discussion focused on how the demoed version of the game differed from retail. Who is to say that DriveClub is going to be any different?
Yeah, well, I wouldn't smack a 500 euro device with my fist
Ah come on, it is a proven method for us from the 70's and 80's
That's always been the way! Something doesn't work? Give it a smack! At least the guy in the video put a towel underneath to cushion the blows from vibrating through the rest of the system.

few years back i worked at certain pc manufacturer, assembling pcs etc, one time as usual everything was set up together and pc just wouldnt start. we swapped parts, did some usual checking and nothing, still wont run. Guy who worked there for many years, came, turned it upside down, smashed the case with his fist and voila - it worked
sometimes some screws can be set up too tight, causing micro bendings (from the lack of better word) of pcb`s, and when there is some grinding fan or other mechanical noise giving it a hit with moderate strenght isnt anything unusual

Hey, I smack my PC too from time to time, because ithe case is made of fucking metal, not this plastic fingerprint collector XBONE.
"Players on NBA 2K14 have also reported in-game technical fouls for saying a curse word that the Kinect or mic pics up. This is not only happening when playing with random strangers online, but in private games, direct with friends. Then there are games like Battlefield 4 that will attempt to censor curse words in multi-player, but have an endless supply of them from in-game characters."
