Teslagrad is a unique little hand-drawn 2D steampunk sidescrolling puzzler-platformer scheduled for release in Q4 2013 on the PC, PS3 and Wii U. Magnetism and electricity form the basis of gameplay here, which takes place in a steampunk version of Europe called Elektropia. You play the role of a young boy descended from the ancient Teslamancer cast stuck in a conspiracy revolving around a despotic king; players will attempt to master the power of Teslamancy and magnetism to solver various puzzles and challenges in the desolate Tesla Tower.
Okay, impressions so far: the beginning was rather boring, so boring that after few thoughts "Well, I've seen this already, nothing new and special, meh" I almost quit. But around the same time I reached first boss and decided to finish him. He was boring as well. Out of curiosity I went to see what he was guarding and this is where game took unexpected turn. Once you receive Blink Boots you are starting to realize potential of the gameplay. It literally changed the polarity of my mood, haha: from "well it is pretty but another rather boring platformer" to "why in the hell I thought it is boring when it is damn awesome!". So yeah, be patient with it and the gameplay will grow up on you in time.
And of course it is pretty in graphical aspects. Too bad the BG music/SFXt was kinda mediocre - this game really could benefit from beautiful OST like in Vessel. Something atmospheric like light "fantasy industrial" would fit, I think. Like this:
but with lighter and more calm, less intimidating mood to fit atmosphere.
Also, I didn't like controls. Clunky, unpolished (you can't use "attack" if yo jumped and there is a moving platform under you and so on) - I really hope it just demo issues.
But overall impressions is really positive, I'm loving this.
I understand it's incomplete and I want to like it. Yet it has given me nothing new to grasp my attention. Animation is pretty solid but other than that I don't manage to see any original ideas.
Good... well, it is hard to define good. If you like such kind of games - ie puzzle-platformers (tm) - then you sure will like it. Mechanics are solid, although most of normal (non-secret) puzzles are way too easy but this, in other hands, makes them more enjoyable. The lack of usual narrative (text, dialogues ,etc) may turn someone off but such kind of games rarely feature it.
It wasn't "absolutely spectacular 10/10", but I liked it a lot. Better than Giana Sisters for sure, but i can't come up with a similar game to compare. I can't really rate it properly now "from fresh" since I've been playing demo/alphas for few moth but I do suggest to give it a shot and if you do - please try to last after the first boss. After you discover boots thins suddenly will became more fun.
